Questions 3: Minus 2

Envy from Fullmetal Alchemist

Envy from Fullmetal Alchemist

As I said, I only have one question and then I’ll answer for me:

What are you doing this summer?

A simple question, but one that has an impact on indie authors and bloggers alike.  The summer is a slow and nearly dead time for both.  You scrambling to get what little sales you can find and try to promote with the hope of hitting a freak high point.  At least that’s been my experience.  Sure, you can release a new book and put on the afterburners to boost it.  Not a guarantee, but it’s something.  Otherwise, you hang back and ride out the storm to about mid-August/September.

For me, I’m going with the second option since I don’t have anything else to release right now.  Will I make it to the fall with Charms of the Feykin?  No idea.  My summer for writing will be working on the first draft of Chasing Bedlam  (the 2’s of fans cheer for that news) and maybe Book 14.  The kid has summer session, but it’s only for half a day and that doesn’t give me much time.  The episodic nature of ‘Bedlam’ makes it easier to take breaks than the heavier Windemere.

All of that leads me to these two points.  One is for July and the other is for August:

  1. See that ‘Legends of Windemere Bios’ page that showed up out of nowhere?  Well, I’m going to be putting ‘Teaser Tuesday’ and ‘Questions 3’ on a break in July.  They will be replaced by character bios that will give the basics of each champion, Kira Grasdon, and Fizzle.  A smarter person than I suggested this as a way of helping those who start late in the series to learn about the characters.  Some characters will be missing info due to spoilers, but I’m hoping to give a background and insight into each one with 2-3 paragraphs.  The listed info will include: hair, eyes, role/job, debut book, signature weapon, unique markings, and hometown.  Not sure what else to put there right now.
  2. In August, I might bring back ‘Questions 3’ and turn Tuesday into a guest post day for authors.  Nothing extravagant or complicated.  If you want to write up a post to promote your book then let me know.  It’ll be a first come, first serve thing and the amount of people who respond will determine if I add extra days to this.  Since this is for August, I’ll speak more about it later.

Anyway, that’s the news.  Kind of like a goals/life update, which might work out since I don’t know if I’ll be around over the weekend.  Having trouble deciding on what to say in those things since I don’t do much.  Have fun.

Check out an interview with Queen Trinity of the chaos elves by none other than Lisa the Robot Girl.

coldhandboyack's avatarEntertaining Stories

Welcome to another edition of Lisa Burton Radio. I’m your host, Lisa Burton, the robot girl. This is the show where we interview the characters that make our stories come to life.

We have a very special guest today. Waiting on the telephone is Queen Trinity of the Chaos Elves.

“Welcome, your majesty. It’s an honor to have you here today.”

“Thank you for having me. Majesty is definitely a new one from someone outside of my people. Most aren’t very happy to see me. Whole assassin and prankster reputation tends to precede me.”

“So the continent of Shayd doesn’t sound like a very nice place. Lots of storms, undead creatures, and only a few edible roots. I always thought of elves as being from beautiful places. Why stay there?”

“The simple answer is that it’s our home. Long ago, the original elves were evil and conquered the world. Some…

Writing about BARBARIANS – Guest Post…

A fun guest post!

Chris The Story Reading Ape's avatarChris The Story Reading Ape's Blog

A big thank you to the Storyreading Ape for having me on for a guest post so soon after being part of the promotional tour for my latest book, Legends of Windemere: Tribe of the Snow Tiger. This is the 10th volume of my fantasy series, which involves one of the heroes, Timoran Wrath, returning to his homeland. He is a barbarian, so I finally got to include more of his culture and background into the series. After writing about city-folk and nomadic tribes for so long, working with a group that is stationary and wild was certainly different. Writing barbarians is definitely not as easy as it looks. Here are 7 tips when it comes to this muscular warriors of the wilderness:

  1. BIG! The muscles are big. The weapons are big. The voices, boasting, appetites, houses, chairs, and everything about barbarians are big. Though if you go…

Teaser Tuesday: Luke Makes a New Friend

A fun teaser this time.  Tried to clear it of all spoilers without hurting the flow.  This introduces one of the new characters that may or may not play a big role in the story.  Honestly, Lodur was just plain fun to write.

Grab a copy for yourself or gift it to a friend who loves barbarians, badass women, and/or epic adventures.

20 Questions with S.K. Nicholls

Unknown's avatarDon Massenzio

soft_DSC4762b

Today we sit down with fellow Florida author S.K. Nicholls. Susan will tell us a bit about herself, her work and her inspiration. I hope you enjoy today’s installment of 20 Questions.

Q1) When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I planned to go to college in 1978 to study journalism, much encouraged by teachers I had at that time. Although I had scholarships, I opted for a degree in nursing as I felt the pay would help increase my family’s standard of living, and it did, but my heart was always in writing. I wrote the best Nurse’s Notes ever written.

Q2) How long does it typically take you to write a book?

Six to eight weeks to pound out a rough draft and one to two years to edit it.

Q3) What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

I have no schedule…

Fine. Let’s Call It A Draw

(I finally know what the name of this song is and what he was saying.  Kept thinking Carnosaur for some reason.)

I’m writing this yesterday after the lawn mowing and feeling very sleepy.  Ever notice that people start calling on the phone, asking you questions, or just interacting with you the moment you run out of energy?  God forbid they show up when you’re awake and aware of your surroundings.  A little space would be nice.

This week saw the release of Tribe of the Snow Tiger and Legends of Windemere Fantasy Bundle #2.  The latter hasn’t sold anything this week, but it’s really there for anyone who wants to catch up for cheap.  The former is the one I’m more concerned about and it’s inching along.  All the marketing is set up and it was only the Men’s Adventures Top 100 lists for an hour.  Really hope it debuts on a fantasy list, but things just aren’t selling like they used to.  Probably because it’s far into a series, so I won’t have the same initial success.  Not everyone has read the first 9 and many shy away from series that are longer than a trilogy.  Downside to starting with this series, but it’s the one that sets the stage for everything else.  I do like the lengthy stuff because it gives me a lot of space to do evolutions and multiple characters.  Still, it would be nice if I could find a way to keep some momentum.

I finished writing Raven’s Game, which will be going up on the blog through October.  31 sections and 31 days.  With that project done, I’ve been editing Book 13 in preparation of tackling Book 14.  I’m still very nervous about 13 because of what’s going on.  There’s a lot of traveling, which I had happen between scenes.  The heroes are split into 2 to help with this, but there’s a lot that is going on.  One of the toughest parts is that the champions aren’t acting like themselves.  Without going into details, something in Book 12 did some major damage to them and they’re trying to move on with this wound.  Some have broken confidences and are becoming numb.  Others are lashing out to the point where they are no longer team players.  It’s a big change from the previous books, which might be why I’m nervous.  I keep thinking something is wrong, but maybe it’s supposed to be like that since they aren’t right in the head for this adventure.

Another challenge is that some of the action scenes are short.  Again, I can’t go into details, but I have a few fights that I thought would last for a page or two.  Yet, they’re only lasting for a few paragraphs.  They’re detailed and to the point, but it’s like those involved simply don’t have the time for banter or prolonging the fight.  Maybe that comes from the fact that the adventure involves battling against a deadline, so a lot of what the champions are doing requires getting it done quickly.  Just a really different atmosphere than what I did before.  Book 14 might be the same because it focuses on an adventure that goes alongside what the champions are doing, but still plays into the main storyline.  A lot of experimentation at this stage in the game.

Beyond all of that, this week was a lot of maintaining the house and cooking.  I’m slightly disappointed in myself because even with having the house to myself all day, I didn’t get any more work done than I usually do.  Not sure if it’s because I had nobody around to help with other things or because I’m just worn down.  All I know is that I have 180 pages to go on the edits, which I’d like to finish by Thursday.  Once Friday hits, I lose the desktop and I’m back to working upstairs on the bed.  Not a comfortable place, but I get paranoid if I work downstairs where other people are.

So, what’s the plan for the week?

  1. Finish editing Ritual of the Lost Lamb.
  2. Prepare posts for July.
  3. Cooking, sleeping, and biking.
  4. Watch movies with son since zoo trip was rained out again.
  5. Car stuff.
  6. Promote Tribe of the Snow Tiger as much as possible.
  7. Should really finish the chapter outlines for Chasing Bedlam.
  8. Write blurbs for Charms of the Feykin.
  9. Consider living a more interesting life, but only when wearing pajamas and already in bed.
