7 Ways to Put a Robot in Your Fantasy Story
It isn’t easy putting tech into a fantasy setting. Yet it can be done! Sometimes even correctly. Here are 7 methods that might or might not work. Though looking at the ‘humor’ tag on this post, it’s probably a lot of tongue and cheek.
- Time travel! Nothing goes wrong with having a robot time travel from a non-magical future to the magical past. Except for changing history and risking a paradox. The robot could make it that technology never evolves, so it was never created to go back in time to cause the . . . I really hate time travel.
- A quirky gnome decides to go as far as possible with golem creation. This results in him or her realizing that you can’t depend entirely on magic. So they add some armor and gears and steam and whatever else they can find along with spells. Then the explosion happens, their creation wanders off, and the gnome is left with a single hair that is permanently smoking.
- Zombies with gears jammed into them. Results vary from WTF!? to ‘Get the ale away from the nercromancer’.
- An ancient race decided to pursue the technological arts. They thought it was the path to immortality and created mechanical bodies. When the first one was done, a citizen was chosen to be killed and have their brain put inside. Sadly, they thought it was a contest for a lifetime supply of chocolate and used their new body to turn society into rubble. Rumor is that they remain there in misery because robots aren’t able to enjoy chocolate.
- Aliens crash landed on the planet and died because magic is toxic to them. They left behind a robot that some hapless wanderer awakens. It roams the countryside in search of its masters or maybe mindless destruction. Really depends on what the aliens were looking for, but they’re dead and nobody speaks their language to solve the problem. Except for the inevitable hybrid that makes no sense and can control the robot with her mind.
- Technology existed long before magic appeared. Now it’s been uncovered and trying to make a comeback. Robots will lead the way to face the wizards and dragons. An army of metal and ancient programming that knows nothing more than destruction. Unless they were programmed for hugs, which means the war might turn awkward.
- Lock a man in full body platemail and write ‘I Am A Robot’ on his chest. How will he stay alive? Eating food through a straw. Bathroom? Don’t ask such disgusting questions. How do they know the term ‘robot’? This conversation is over!

GUEST POST: BEN PEEK
Today, I am very excited to host Ben Peek, author of the The Children Trilogy, to Bookwraiths. The second book in his fantasy series (Leviathan’s Blood) just hit the shelves here in the United States on May 31st, 2016, and I was fortunate enough to snag a copy of it as well as Book One, The Godless. (Look for my reviews of the novels in the days to come!) Not only that, but Mr. Peek even volunteered to share his thoughts on royalty in his fantasy stories. So enjoy!

It is a strange thing, but Australia has a Queen.
I’m nearly forty and Elizabeth Windsor has been the Queen my entire life. She turned ninety this year. I’d struggle to tell you a whole lot about her, really. I live in her colony, but she does not.
Her presence…

Adrift
Tether has been cut
Not by my own hand
I drift away
From the world below
Passing into shadows
Bumped and buffered
Shoved in directions
I wish not to follow
Forced to go limp
Or break
I know not what I want
Stability or solitude
A corner of darkness
To call my own
And drift for all of time

Robots in a Fantasy Setting?
When creating a world of magic, most people go the traditional route with medieval Europe level of technology. Though accidents happen when you add a little plumbing or some more advanced items. One may even go further with having magic-based technology like airships, magic guns, and flying cities. The sky can be the limit once you step outside of the traditional settings. Yet, there is one thing that doesn’t come up that often:
Robots!
The closest you usually get are golems. These are artificial creatures forged by magic and typically used as mindless servants. You see a lot of them in The Merchant of Nevra Coil. They get mentioned a few times and big ones are unleashed in The Compass Key and Sleeper of the Wildwood Fugue. Still, they don’t exactly count as robots for many people.
Anime and video games seem to touch on this or at least get close. For example, you have Cait Sith from Final Fantasy VII who is a remote-controlled robot in a world where magic exists. Been a while, but I think he can use magic even though he’s a tech creation. There might have been a little magical creation to him, but I really have to read up more on it agian. So you can see that it’s rare that you have a true combination. Oddly enough, ‘Pinocchio’ and some variations on ‘Alice in Wonderland’ try this. One is a marionette (tech for that world) made alive by magic. The other has a version called ‘The Looking Glass Wars’, which has some characters using magic in a world that has robotic soldiers and high tech melee weapons.
I think part of the reason you don’t see many combinations is because of how people take to magic and technology. Those who accept magic in a story tend to look at it as a natural and used by man. Technology, on the other hand, is entirely man-made and artificial, so it doesn’t mix with magic. Some also require a lot of science and logic in regards to technology, which isn’t the same with magic where you only need to remain within your own rules. Both systems come under scrutiny and a robot in a magical world stands on the border with a spotlight. Honestly, I do want to see more of these types of characters and creations. As time moves on, I hope to slip a few into Windemere where the stories permit me.
So, what do you think of magical robots? Any that come to mind?

A Post
Not a decent title, but I couldn’t think of anything else. Just not in the mood to be very witty or even that social. Still, I need to keep things moving and maybe this post will be a little cathartic.
I finished the edits on Book 13 and 2 of the 3 Charms of the Feykin blurbs. Taking a break on the last one because I don’t want to copy the other two. Sales have been going if I look at the number line, but not really if I look at the numbers. So I’m not really sure where the sales are happening or which books unless I take a while to check each one. I don’t have the patience and mood for that. You know, there should be a rule that one doesn’t blog when in certain mental states. Not angry though because entertaining rants can come from that.
The kid has 2 full days, 2 half-days, and then an hour of school over the course of the week and then a whole week off. So I won’t be tackling any big projects. To be honest, I don’t have the urge to do much. I was thinking of outlining a future story during the ‘me’ times and then write a novel while he has summer school. As it stands, I don’t really want to do anything. Not even TV and we’re heading into a conversation that I shouldn’t have on here, so skip to next paragraph.
I’ve been putting a lot of attention on Twitter and was considering switching that up a little bit. Instead of a tweet every 3 hours with retweets in-between, I pin a new tweet every morning and retweet throughout the day. This takes some pressure off me to retweet between tweets. The only downside is that it means my tweet won’t be in followers’ feeds for very long or get revivals. Still, it doesn’t hurt to see how this goes. Beats driving myself nuts on Hootsuite and I don’t have a day where I forget to tweet at all.
This week did see two big events for the kid. He was chosen to read part of a poem during his school’s Flag Day celebration, which was taped and I put on my FB page. It’s friends only though because I have family members who go berserk if I make anything with him public. The other event was Thursday night when we went to the nearby Children’s Museum. He had done some art at a workshop about De Kooning and all of the participants had their pieces put on the wall. It was a lot of fun and he was very proud, so those events were good. Though, he seemed a bit happier about getting new shoes that light up when he walks.
Honestly, I can’t think of any goals for the week. Just not able to get the motivation and inspiration going. Heck, I couldn’t even bother to search for a video and took my ‘not in the mood’ standby. So, we’ll play it day by day. Maybe I’ll work on an outline or maybe I’ll spend all week staring at the ceiling fan. Only time will tell.
