Ichabod Brooks & The Cover Art Competition

So, things are going to get a little busy around here.  I’m using 99designs to get a cover for The Life & Times of Ichabod Brooks.  This requires a lot of asking for people to vote and share their opinion as covers come in.  Hopefully, I get some good ones and we end the next week or two with something great.

Just giving a heads up in the hopes of people keeping an eye out for those posts.  Thanks.

Goal Post: Just A Little Off-Center

Whelp . . . Here we are . . . Staring down the barrel of the last full week of school.  Not sure it’s a barrel though.  More like a walkway that is probably nowhere near as long as I hope it will be.  Don’t get me wrong.  I love spending time with my son.  The only thing is that I repeatedly fear that I won’t get my work done before I go from full-time author to full-time parent mode.  July is going to start off a little bumpy from what I can tell since I’m still getting things together for Ichabod, but we’ll get eaten by that dragon when we get to it.

I did finish editing Legends of Windemere: Path of the Traitors and was rather amazed at something.  I didn’t have to rework that much of it.  Yes, I can hear many authors and editors shrieking in the back.  There’s that whole ‘rewrite 80-90% of the rough draft’ rule that people abide by.  Does that really count if you spent weeks/months designing characters and the story?  Technically, I do two outlines before I even touch the first draft.  One is a long story synopsis along with character bios, location lists, monster lists, supporting cast lists, and key info write ups.  That last one would include stuff like how the champion prophecy works and the Compass Key.  After that, I do a chapter style outline that I make sure is extensive.  Every morning before I write, I look it over and add/merge stuff as the story progresses.  Sometimes I even spend a day going back to fix stuff.  With all of that, I wonder if I can even call what I do a true first draft.

Anyway, I’m nearly halfway through Legends of Windemere: Warlord of the Forgotten Age.  I should be able to finish it next week even with a few other things going on.  This one has needed a few section rewrites.  The going is tougher here since it’s the last one and I can tell that there are areas that I rushed.  Hopefully those have been fixed because they were mostly in the beginning.  Some things were mentioned and disappeared too, so I have to fix that when I come to it.  Specifically, a magic item that I forgot about and hints of a conversation that had to happen, but didn’t.  I might just get rid of the hints because I can’t get the characters to a point where they need to have the talk.  It’s not easy ending a series, especially when you want to create tension in a rather tight-knit and stable group.  Part of me still wonders if that book title is the one I thought of and lost two years ago.  That’s going to eat away at me for a long time.

Not much else is going on here.  Going to be a while before I can discuss my sleep apnea test results.  Getting together with friends at the zoo tomorrow.  The kid is excited that he gets to play tour guide and teach everyone about the animals.  Today is just laundry and editing for me after I get home from a local carnival.  Having a somewhat low key weekend always makes me feel awkward.  I should be enjoying it, but I always get this feeling that something is going to happen.  Like it’s some kind of calm before the storm thing.  Then again, next week does have a lot going on besides editing.

Oh yeah, Protecting Bedlam had its first week and I hope people enjoyed it.  Might not have been the wisest decision to introduce everyone to the third story.  Nice to see some of the villains getting some attention.  Considering these are full chapter sections, I’m not sure what I expect from this.  Writing the book was somewhat cathartic and helped get the idea out of my head.  The series doesn’t sell or get much attention even when I promote, so I can’t figure out if I should write the next one for publishing.  It’s frustrating because I get compliments on the characters and story, but the sales don’t seem to match the excitement for it.  Maybe this is something that is more suited for television and movies?

I’ve decided that my summer project will be Quest of the Broken-Hearted, which is a one shot spin-off sequel for Legends of Windemere.  Not sure how much I can talk about here since it would reveal a little bit about the ending.  My plan will be to publish this next summer, but I want to write it soon after my last editing run of the final book to make sure everything is fresh.  It’s going to be in almost short story form similar to the Bedlam series where the character faces a different challenge in each one until the very end.  Each chapter title is the monster, except for the character’s name being the first one and Lacarsis (City of Evil) being the second. That’s all I can say for now.

Plans for the week:

  1. Finish editing Warlord of the Forgotten Age.
  2. Zoo time!
  3. School stuff!
  4. Design characters for one of the Sin stories if I finish editing.
  5. Read over the Quest of the Broken-Hearted outline.
  6. Catch up on sleep one day.
  7. Determine the fate of mankind.

By the way, WONDER WOMAN WAS A LOT OF FUN!  Almost forgot about mentioning that.  Feels like it’s been a really long week.

Champions of Social Media

Yahoo Image Search

Sari–  Who keeps sending me these pictures?  I told all of you that I didn’t want to be a part of this.

Delvin–  It’s been a while since we’ve shown up on the blog and this was the best that could be put together.  Does anybody understand why I can’t post this thing?

Nyx–  Nobody is questioning how the six of us are able to use computers without any training or explanation.

Sari–  I’m pretty sure these things aren’t supposed to make sense.  They’re supposed to be . . . Why is my portable thingy getting bombarded with these pictures?

Timoran–  At least your fingers are not hitting more than one button at the same time.  I cannot seem to find Luke on here.

Luke–  I don’t see any of you either.  We’re on the one with the all the bands, right?

Delvin–  All I see are eggs, number signs, and shorthand.  Lots of aggression too.  I still can’t get this thing accepted.  What am I doing wrong?

Nyx–  Those numbers are in the red, so I think you wrote too much.  As for you, little brother, I have no idea where you are.  Nobody’s screen looks the same.

Sari–  Stop sending pictures that I don’t want!!!

Timoran– I suggest we all go to whatever Sari is on and see if we can help her.  It is that one with the ‘F’ symbol, which I assume is a grade.  Why would something with such a terrible reputation have so many people?

Dariana– I’m not having any problems communicating.

Luke–  You’re just using telepathy with people instead of writing to them on the screen.  I would really stop doing that because it looks like they’re freaking out.  One of them is waving a lower case ‘t’ and a book at you.

Dariana–  I’m sorry.  Let me just write that and . . . oops . . . Why did the computer change my word?  What’s a ‘Satan’?

Nyx–  I don’t know, but that book guy looks like he’s about to cry.  I’m starting to think that this was a really bad idea.

Sari–  I will kill you!!!

Delvin–  Oh for the love of Ram, let me see what’s going on with you.  It’s just Lloyd Tenay sending you a bunch of pictures.  I told you not to make him a friend.

Sari–  But why are they all pictures of these guys that I don’t know?

Timoran–  He claims to be sending you . . . dick pics?  I sense a really bad pun has been used.

Nyx–  That’s it.  I’m burning this post to the ground.

Swift Six Author Interview – Melody Klink

eranamage's avatarLibrary of Erana

Name: Melody Klink

What attracts you to the genre in which you write? Young Adult has a magic about it that always brings me back; the stories and characters aren’t desperately childish and naïve, yet they haven’t been hardened by years and a world of experience. Outlandish things are still possible, and magic still lurks in the small things.

What piece of writing advice do you wish you’d known when you started your writing adventures? Don’t try to make every word perfect in the first go! First draft like crazy, then go back and shine it up. And then do it again. And probably a third time… but any which way, don’t expect perfection in the first go ’round.

If you could have dinner with any famous person or character who would you choose? Wow, this is a tough one! Hmm. I think I’d have dinner with Carl Sagan; he…

White Bear, on #LisaBurtonRadio

coldhandboyack's avatarEntertaining Stories

Welcome to another edition of Lisa Burton Radio, I’m your host, Lisa the robot girl, and my guest today has a very important job. In America we would say he’s a stuffed animal, in other places they would refer to him as a plush toy. “Welcome to the show, White Bear.”

“Hi, Lisa. It’s a pleasure to be here. Thanks so much for choosing me to be your first stuffed animal interview!”

“Pleasure to have you. You’re best friends with someone named Angel. How did you two come to meet?”

“As far as I know, before meeting Angel, I lived always lived in a doctor’s office at Shriner’s Hospital in Tampa, Florida. I spent most of my time at the computer doing research or hanging out on a bookshelf. Lots of kids came in and out of that office, but they never paid any attention to me. One day, a…

7 Tips to Putting Social Media in Fiction

Yahoo Image Search

Being a fantasy author, this really isn’t my area of expertise.  Closest thing to social media in my world are telepaths and that’s a little bit too invasive.  Okay, maybe they’re not as invasive as Facebook, but we’ll see where this goes.  By the way, Bedlam doesn’t help me either because nobody has the time for tweets when there are cannibals sizing you up for a pot.

  1. Figure out a fun way to reveal the tweets, posts, and status updates.  Characters can talk about them, but that can be boring.  You can always go the italic route in the middle of conversations or use it for an opener.  Barring all of that, you could just write the entire thing in tweets.  What could go wrong?
  2. Create your own social media program to avoid getting sued.  Look at what’s wrong with the current crop and improve on it.  Talk to people about your ideas and see if they have suggestions.  Once you have a new social media program ready, give up on the story and make friends with a programmer.  You might be on to something there.
  3. It pays to have the characters that aren’t on the social media site even if it’s a central part of the story.  We all have those people in our lives who refuse to get in social media or consider it evil.  They rant about it while outside in the fresh air and away from their phones.  Basking in the sun instead of staying indoors to become paler than a Twitter egg.  Fools.
  4. Never forget the essential social media faux pas.  There’s always that typo or misunderstanding that changes everything.  After all, it isn’t like people think before reacting to a social media post.  They never consider it was an innocent mistake because they forget that it wasn’t long ago that they wrote ‘boob’ instead of ‘book’.  Like they’re so perfect.
  5. Drunk social media never ends well, but cannot be avoided.  Commonly involves nudity or requests for sex being sent to a parent.
  6. Oversharing is a necessity.  Can’t have social media without at least one character who reports on what they ate, reveals everything their kids did, or announces every little detail of their life.  Not to mention the online quizzes, political posts, personal pictures that are one breeze away from porn, and some fairly questionable things.
  7. Never forget the hashtags.  No matter how ridiculous or nonsensical they are.  You need your hashtags.  Otherwise, it isn’t really a social media site.  Might as well just do something crazy like send letters by mail.
