So I’ve been editing Crossing Bedlam and figure now is a good time to do a few things like get volunteers for the ‘Book is Live’ posts. Funny thing about that. Some people responded to a request in the email for The Mercenary Prince. I kept a list and deleted the emails to clear space in the folders. Unfortunately, I put the list on the notepad of my phone and it’s blank. So if you already volunteered then please let me know again. Really sorry about that.
While not a big thing, I’m toying with the idea of some early copies. This isn’t decided yet. If I did it for edits and feedback then it would be cutting it insanely close to the release date. If I did it for reviews then I always fear that Amazon will do something. There’s also the fact that I tried it with my first book way back when and everyone who got a free copy disappeared without a trace. Some even shut down their email accounts, so I couldn’t get in touch with them.
Anyway, let’s get to the meat of the post. I’m doing chapter titles for Crossing Bedlam instead of my usual numbers or Roman numerals. This isn’t easy, especially since I still have 3-4 scenes in each chapter. Hard to pin something down. So I figured I’d put them here and see what people think:
- Welcome the Shattered States
- Rules of the Trade
- Rhinos in the Road
- You’re in Our Armies Now
- Songs and Stripes Part 1
- Songs and Stripes Part 2
- Bride of the ‘Burbs
- Kiss of the Half-Dead
- The ‘Delicate’ Duchess of LaSalle
- Business, Bad Blood, & Bart
- Scenic Nebraska
- Wendigo Season
- Blasphemers!
- A Killer’s Day in Court
- Artists of the Arena
- Really, Reno?
- Iron City by the Bay
Honestly, #15 is the only one I’m really having trouble with. It’s also been ‘Spleen Puncturing at Battle Mountain’, ‘Maestros of Mayhem’, and ‘The Art of Spleen Puncturing & Apologies’. It’s amazing how hard it is to come up with these things.

Sign me up for the release, Charles.

Okay here is my volunteer response. I volunteer. How about Spleen ‘Splaining

Thanks for helping. Maybe. Not much in the way of explaining though. Lloyd isn’t known for talking. Honestly, I don’t know why I’m hooked on the spleen for this.

Wow, Battle Mountain is surprisingly close to where I grew up, and I’ve been and worked there many times. For my 2¢, I would keep as many geographical names as possible. I’d also make them something that looks intriguing in a Tweet. That way, you might draw local interest via Twitter, etc.
I’m always happy to help, so sign me up. Setting up those titles on the Table of Contents is a bugger. I had to do it in Notebook, and don’t even remember how I did it.

I’m keeping the location names in the story. Wasn’t sure I should put all of them into the titles. That and some of the locations are kind of glanced over or simply stop overs before wilderness action. Some of them didn’t match very well. As for Battle Mountain specifically, it’s been turned into a gladiatorial arena place and gold mine. The characters get caught up into the fights to earn money.
I’m use Word, so it’s all about the bookmarks. I’m actually setting up the bookmarks as I edit. That way the search is easier when I have to type of the Table of Contents.

Lots of gold nearby too. L & C should fit right in.

Every other state works off bartering, but Nevada has retained a monetary system with gold bars and coins. Not sure if I can use that for the title.

All of your chapter titles are fine. I would consider using them as Twitter bait on occasion. I’ve been doing something similar with the stories from Notebook, and it gains a small amount of interest.

Good idea. I’ll do that when the book is out. Definitely easier than trying to think of something catchy every single time. Thanks.

I have to say that when I use Bombshell Squad, with an image of Lisa it gains more attention. The Soup ladle and Jason Fogg have had their moments though.

Wonder if it’s the name or the image. 🙂 I’ll only have the cover art to work with things, but the scene might be enough to work with everything.

Fun fact — I actually had chapter titles in Imminent Danger originally, then had to cut them because apparently I had a habit of totally giving away the plot twists with the titles. So I’m definitely not the right person to ask about chapter titles, LOL. They look great, though! My favorite is probably “Really, Reno?” SO SASSY! I can’t even.

Awww. I just changed ‘Really, Reno?’ to ‘Cassidy vs Reno’. Only because I gave Lloyd a chapter title. Not sure how people will take to him getting a title and her not getting one. This is the first time I’ve done chapter titles and I’ve found that a somewhat silly book makes it easier.

Not set in stone. Again, it depends on if I think people will throw a fit that she doesn’t get a chapter title.
