Ask a Character: Nimby

I was going to delay this until Thursday, but two things occurred to me.  One is that I’m heading out on Friday, so I would run the risk of missing all the questions.  The other is that I have an annoyed halfling thief pointing a dagger at me.

Nimby: Luke got Tuesday and you promised me Tuesday.  Do the set up.

Luke also only got two questions, so I wasn’t really worried.

Nimby: Nobody likes the hero.  The sidekicks got all of the real fans.  Now introduce me.

For those unfamiliar with my story, Nimby is the halfling thief that befriends Luke.  He is working at Hamilton Military Academy as a carpenter after ‘retiring’.  He is either the black sheep of the thieving family or their most talented member who got bored with the life of crime.  Nimby has joined up with Luke to earn some stories to tell, have some fun, and snag whatever riches fall off Luke’s enemies.  He’s also a chatterbox, annoying, short-sighted, has a history with river nymphs, and I’m pretty sure he stole my wallet.  That enough for you?

Nimby: That should do it.  Ask away people!

Luke: Why didn’t I get to talk during the introduction?

Uh . . . you didn’t want to?

Luke: You just thought of having the character speak today and I got shafted because I was the first one.  Aren’t I supposed to be the main hero of your story?

Yeah . . . Sorry?

Nimby: ASK ME QUESTIONS!

*Luke sits in the corner to grumble and pout.*  Big baby.

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

  1. Hello Nibmy, first of all, I really love your character! You’re so cute! And you made me laugh and smile so many times while reading Beginning of a Hero!
Okay, okay, the question! Here goes: What made you want to work at the Military Academy? (I’d ask another question, but I think the answer is going to be essential to the story plot and needs to remain unspoken, so that’s all I’ve got for now.)
Oh, and have you seen my purse? 🙂

    • Fritz from back- Everyone loves the halfling!

Quiet! My time to shine. I came to Selenia’s because . . . uh . . . I just kind of wandered over here after buying a fake treasure map. I almost got lost in the Caster Swamp and made my way here. I was healed, talked to Selenia about a job, and starting teaching carpentry. It’s been nice, except for the food and morning runs. I have to admit that I feel safer being surrounded by warriors than being on my own in the streets. I can handle myself, but why bother when I can stick with people who can protect me. Thanks for your question.

Aedyn from back- You forgot about her purse.

I didn’t forget about her purse. It’s right here. *hands it back* There’s nothing valuable in it. Just some paper and odd things that I don’t think I can sell. I don’t think people in this world carry money around like we do. Is everything free?

Soooo…Nimby…I have heard tell that you have a history with river nymphs!! What kind of history?

    • Fritz from back- Yeah, Nimby. Mind explaining that one.

Nimby: Not much to tell. Fell in love with a river nymph when I was a kid and it didn’t work out. They’re fickle creatures with no understanding of the non-fae heart. I’d like to say that I was thirteen and didn’t know any better.

Fritz from back- That’s a pretty lame story.

Luke from back- My love life is much worse than that.

Aedyn from back- You are actually gloating about that.

      *Luke goes back to moping*

Nimby: Heart broken by river nymph and I don’t like what they do to those they are interested in. They’re watery teases with no sense of loyalty. That’s all I’m saying on the subject.

I have a couple questions for you Nimby.
1st – Describe a time when you either got caught practicing your art of thievery, or when you were almost caught.
2nd – Who is your fashion inspiration?

    • Well . . . you see . . . there are so many times that a thief gets caught or almost caught. We don’t really remember the details beyond how not to get caught again. I got caught pick-pocketing a noble when I was 5 and was chased out of his bedroom. Another time I was put in jail for a few days because I robbed a pastry store. Getting caught usually doesn’t involve any flashy story.

Fritz from back- Tell him about the rooftop incident!

A time that I almost got caught was in Hero’s Gate when I tried to steal a holy relic.

Aedyn from back- From which temple?

Not important! The priests noticed me and I got chased around the rooftops. It’s surprisingly easy to get around Hero’s Gate by rooftop. The chase went on for about three hours until I got to outer wall and dove into the L’Dandrin River. I clung to a ship that was leaving and got away. Until the captain found me in the hold and tossed me into the river again.

Fashion inspiration is really the thieves that came before me. My clothes help blend into my surroundings and they have hidden pockets, which I had to put in myself. If there is a designer that made this type of clothing then I don’t know his name. He’s probably also a thief who stole the idea from someone else.

Okay, it’s the REAL here Nimby weighing in with his 2 cents.

I have to say that you really captured the essence of the character perfectly and those were answers that he would have given. It makes me miss playing him and all the crazy antics I had him get into. 😉
