‘The Compass Key’ is Coming

Sketch by Jason Pedersen

Sketch by Jason Pedersen

Legends of Windemere: The Compass Key will be debuting this Friday, so we’re about to kick off the fun of Hype Week!  This is the 5th book of the series, which brings up a few interesting aspects of the long saga.  A trilogy has a clean beginning-middle-end, so things get tricky when you go beyond that.  You run the risk of repetition, staleness, readers losing interest, and how to fit new characters into the mix.  All of this makes the 5th book a milestone that needs to be a ‘Refresher’.

First, keep in mind that for some readers, you will fail to refresh your series.  I’m saying this right off the bat because we all know you can’t make everyone happen.  So don’t get upset when it looks like things are taken a slow downturn.  You should be seeing the first book selling too, which means people will make their way to the 5th.  As long as you don’t rehash too much, you’ll be fine.

There you have another issue: continuing, ending, and beginning subplots.  Some of the most vocal people will be saying how they want old plots to end.  So here is where a few can be closed up, but create new ones to help with the continuing series.  For example, a few subplots will come to a close in The Compass Key and some will take a twist to keep them going.  There will be new subplots too thanks to the addition of a new character and the increased activity of a few older villains.  Aspects of the game will change and foreshadowing for future events will occur here.  For anyone who read the Stephen teaser next week, you might have a good idea of what will happen.

Now, people will say that you HAVE TO kill off some heroes at this stage.  I won’t say that I will or will not do so.  All I will say is that this isn’t a necessity and you can get away with creating a change to them instead.  Sure, a death can cause a major quake throughout the story, but you need to make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons.  Don’t do this because fans want it or you want to shock them.  Do it because it is right for the story.  At the very least, don’t kill off a main hero, publish, and realize that you just crippled your main plot.

The Compass Key will kick the Champion Prophecy into high gear by introducing a new aspect to it.  Some people may find it interesting and others will groan, but that’s the risk here.  You need to implement the growth inducing events and tests for the heroes at some point in a heroic fantasy.  This is where the conclusion of some plot lines comes into play because you don’t want to be juggling too much.  There are various ways to do this, but I’ll admit that I went the action route.  The Compass Key is much higher in action than the previous books with a ton of battles that help these young heroes grow.  Part of this is because the champions that have gathered haven’t quite mastered fighting as a full unit and the villains are trying to take them down before this happens.  A helpful suggestion to anyone who goes this route: Make your heroes weary and strained if they leap from one fight to another.

The key point of a book like this is the energize everything.  I’ve given a few examples, but it always comes down to the path you want to take your series on.  What works for me, might not be good for you.  As long as you refresh the energy by trimming the old stuff that has run its course and adding fresh items, you’ll do fine.

Because People Are Already Asking!

By Jason Pedersen

By Jason Pedersen

I woke up to a few messages asking me about the Cover Reveal on Wednesday and when the book will even come out.  Many of these messages weren’t even from volunteers.  The truth is that I still don’t have the final cover, so I can’t give an answer.  I can get it today or I can get it later in the week.  It depends on the progress.  Up above is a piece of it, but there are parts of the picture that it came from that are still rough.  So I can’t use it for the Cover Reveal like I did with Family of the Tri-Rune in March.  I have asked Jason if he has one that is ready for a reveal.  Once I get something, I will send out the Cover Reveal email.  That’s really where the situation stands at this time.

So Hype Week is still in limbo until I hear back.  With that in mind, I leave you a few tips that I’ve learned here:

  1. DO NOT mention an exact release date until you have everything locked in.  Delays happen even if you’re a one-person show.  Heck, I got the stomach flu at one point during this adventure.  That pushed my own edits back a few days and was a big part of the first delay.
  2. DO NOT get volunteers for a Cover Reveal until you have the cover.  This one was me jumping the gun and I’ve learned my lesson.
  3. Try not to let impatient readers push your buttons until you do something stupid.  I feel like I’ve become an annoying bastard over this one because I’ve been getting questions about a release date.  Sometimes the same person asks me multiple times even when I say ‘hoping for August’.
  4. DO NOT start Hype Week until you have everything you need.  I made this mistake back with Prodigy of Rainbow Tower.  I kicked off Hype Week without talking to Jason and then found that an event had delayed him.  I felt like an idiot, especially since the cover was well worth the wait.

A final thing here is that authors and readers have to be patient.  Yes, Indie Authors can crank out books quicker than a traditional publisher.  Yet we also have to pay attention to quality and take on more roles than a traditional author.  So it doesn’t pay to badger an author about a release date or an event.  It also doesn’t pay to let the badgering push you to make a mistake.  The book will come out, the cover reveal will happen, the marketing will be done, and things will continue.  Just so happens that a series of delays and WTF moments occur with some releases.

Oh yeah.  I probably won’t be doing a TWUBS chat until September.  Now that I’m going to be on my own with the toddler more often, I have to wait until he starts school again before I try something like that.  Unless I do interview with him sitting next to me and I let him hit buttons from time to time.  Probably not a good way to be taken seriously.

Today, I bear news of a new release; a short horror story called “Madame Lilly: Soulless“, by Dormaine G. This is the second volume of her chilling horror series, Madame Lilly: Voodoo Priestess.

Goals: Hopefully Kicking Off a Hype Week

First order of business:  Did you know some bloggers will copy/paste a post, give you credit, and pingback to the original?  Happened recently and I must say that I was confused.  Didn’t know the person and was shocked to find that my entire post was sitting there.  Not sure if I should be angry or if I’m still wowed by the ridiculousness of the entire thing.

Anyway, I’ll be away from the Internet today as long as the weather holds.  I’m supposed to help a friend with a baseball thing again.  Nothing complicated like last time, but we’ll see what happens.  I’m not allowed to use the scoreboard equipment, so I have to pay attention and tell people when a score is made.  At least it’s only a short game and then I get to sit down to watch a minor league game . . . or sleep.  Not sure which one will happen or be the safest bet.  Never safe to fall asleep around friends.

In COMPASS KEY news, I’m still hoping to get the cover art by the end of the weekend.  As of waking up today, I’m still waiting. It needs a little clean up and then the title/author name, but I’m really hoping to send out the Cover Reveal email this week.  At this point, I’ll be happy if even a fraction of volunteers still help out.  I gathered people too long ago and then delays happened, which might have damaged Hype Week.  It’s hard to tell because people don’t really talk to me any more.  Decipher that for what you will . . . guess that makes sense.  SO I REALLY HOPE TO RELEASE THE BOOK THIS COMING FRIDAY!

For anyone who missed an earlier post, my wife starts a big job in a few weeks.  This means she’ll be out the door before the toddler wakes and back home later than she is now.  So I’ll be limited for a while or until he goes back to school in September.  I’m still going to be the one getting up to make his breakfast, lunch, get him dressed, and get him on the bus.  Plus side is that I have a ton of editing to do on other books and that might take a few months.  No major rush on the writing since I have Books 1-8 finished and I’m only releasing up to 6 this year.  Gives me plenty of time to go over things.  I have 2 weeks before my wife starts her job, so that means I can get Book 6 out of the way and that’s the more important one at this juncture.

Now for the goals:

  1. Get used to do my daily tweets the night before.
  2. Start editing Book 6 of Legends of Windemere: Curse of the Dark Wind.
  3. RELEASE THE COMPASS KEY.
  4. Finish the final pieces of Hype Week once I get the cover art.
  5. Spend all of Friday doing the marketing emails and prep for the new book.
  6. See Guardians of the Galaxy next weekend.
  7. Outline something of I’m feeling restless.  Have two ideas to choose from right now.
  8. Admit that I have no stable goals because I don’t know if this will be a Hype Week or a ‘Sorry For the Delay’ week.

Dueling Tweet Plans

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

It looks like I’ll have to depend a lot on Hootsuite in regards to prepping tweets the night before.  This isn’t a bad thing, but it has brought up a question: Do I try anything special or keep wailing away on the latest book?

When The Compass Key comes out (soooo close!), I’ll focus a lot on that book.  Yet, I wonder if this makes sense for down the road.  I have to admit that I’m getting rather bored pushing the one book and I switch it up at times.  Honestly, I have nothing else to talk about on Twitter since I’m either writing or doing stuff that couldn’t be summed up in 140 characters.  That’s besides the point here and I’m sure I’ll pay for mentioning that.  My main thing is seeing if what I’m planning his merit.

I’m thinking of doing a tweet for each Legends of Windemere book that is currently out.  Beginning of a Hero in the morning followed by Prodigy of Rainbow Tower, Allure of the Gypsies, and Family of the Tri-Rune.  Each book gets a push and it helps me throw some variety into my tweets.

Another idea I saw was every morning making a tweet for a book and pinning it at the top of my feed.  The only issue I have with this is that it depends on people visiting my page.  I see it done by those who do a ton of retweets for other authors, so I think that helps them keep their own product out of the flood.  I don’t tweet like that, which is why I’m leaning toward the first idea.

Anyway, I’m working on an interview, preparing tomorrow’s goal post, and doing whatever I can to make the week easier.  Thank you for any opinions and advice on the ‘1 tweet a day per book’ idea or if you have any other ideas that you found work.

Vacation to Some, Old Hat to Others

Jones Beach on Long Island, NY

Jones Beach on Long Island, NY

One of the suggestions given for a topic was by John W. Howell, author of My GRL.  He wanted to know about my summers on the east coast.  I did summer camp, a few vacations that took me away from the coast, and other things that don’t really strike me as interesting.  The reason is because I live here.  That makes it hard for me to go on about Long Island and the fun I personally had.  Sure, I loved the Bronx Zoo and the Aquarium and tolerated the beaches where crabs were always out to get me.  Sand gets everywhere and it’s uncomfortable after a while.

I remember this happening in Florida too.  Being from New York, the tourist areas still held an appeal.  Disney World, Sea World, Animal Kingdom, and all the other places that drive people to fly down to the heat.  Yet whenever I talked to a local about it, there was no sense of wonder.  Disney World to them was what so many things in New York were to me.  Simply there and an option for fun if you felt like paying for it.  This is why you might feel like a tourist for a few years after moving.

Now, here is what I would recommend to people visiting the Long Island/NYC area:

  1. Bronx Zoo is a must for animal lovers.
  2. Coney Island Aquarium for the same reason and find the original Nathan’s nearby.  There’s also the amusement park.
  3. Beaches.  Take your pick.
  4. Fishing if you’re into it and can afford it.
  5. Wineries are out in the east, but I haven’t been there yet.  I tended to go north to the Finger Lakes for that.
  6. New York City has a ton of museums, but my favorite is the Museum of Natural History because it has dinosaurs.
  7. Take in a Broadway show if you want.  I went to say Le Miserables when I was younger . . . I should say I was dragged to see it because I’m not a fan of musicals.
  8. Try the pizza.  Try the bagels.
  9. Go to a park on Long Island and relax.  We’re the suburbs, so there’s a lot of places to bum around.
  10. Sure there are some historical sites if you’re into that stuff.

That’s all I can think of.  So, what would you suggest in your area?

Butterfly (acrostic)

Read the poem and buy the 99 cent collection.

Pamela Beckford's avatarPoetry by Pamela

An acrostic is a poetry form where the first letter of each line spells a word – the poem title. I have also made each line the same number of syllables.

This poem is from Voices of Nature, a collaboration with Kirsten A.

Black and orange wings
Utter nary a word;
Teaching sensitivity and tenderness,
Treating simplicity through complexity.
Every flutter so gentle
Resting peacefully on milkweed.
Flights of gossamer wings,
Luminous flights of fancy.
Yearly visits bless us.

I thought I knew how I would start this review as I was coming to the end of, but that ending was a real brain scrambler.  Not in a bad way, but in a way that what I thought was going to be revealed wasn’t exactly right.  I was getting curious about the story’s slow pace since it felt like the ending would be rushed.  Instead, it’s left on a fantastic cliffhanger with one of the best final lines that I’ve read in a long time.  Very thankful that I read this after the sequel came out because of this.

The world that is painted is gritty and cruel from the beginning.  It lightens up a little as Aster, the main character, matures and develops.  Still, you never shake the sense that there is harsh classism in this world and a person can get beaten at the slightest provocation.  Pain and death are almost a way of life in this world, which is enhanced through the perspective of Aster.  I would have liked to learn more about the Reavers as the story progressed, but that’s more curiosity.  I don’t think it would have added to the plot and probably would have been out of place there.  After all, in a first person POV book, you can only know what the main character knows and Aster showed no signs of having that knowledge.

Getting on to the main character, I loved how she was written.  It’s hard to discuss this without spoilers because I feel that Aster’s development is the main story.  Her evolution isn’t a straight line either, which is what helped me get through the slower parts of the story.  She had moments of immaturity, indecision, and irrationality, which made her come off as human.  It was the steps back and how she handled them that made her endearing.  It really helps the build up to the finale.  That final line I mentioned locks in the fact that she is no longer the invisible girl you met on the first page of the book.

That isn’t to say the book is flawless and I’m not talking about a few typos because those were few and far between.  I mentioned the slow pacing, but that wasn’t terrible.  By the end, it feels necessary for impact.  The big thing that bugged me is when certain objects or information are being brought up and the reader has no idea what they’re talking about.  It happens a few times and I put attention trying to figure out what the important item or information was.  It first happened with the demand that Aster use a character’s name, but I don’t remember her ever being told the name.  So I was left wondering how she could use it.  The revelations in these situations were rather casual and left me going ‘that’s what I’ve been wondering about for 10 minutes?’. This was the only thing that bugged me for the first two-thirds of the book.  Thankfully, it didn’t happen once the final act kicked in.  This could just be a nitpick on my part though.

Overall, a great story from a first time author and the ending definitely makes the read worthwhile.
