The IX by Andrew Weston

IX coverlargeArden, home to a culture that has existed for thousands of years and which spans dozens of worlds. Regardless, their sophistication cannot prevent calamity at the hands of an unstoppable nemesis. Known only as the Horde, this enemy has proven relentless. They have not only stripped the outer colonies bare, but now threaten the existence of the entire Ardenese way of life.

Realizing there is nothing they can do to prevent the inevitable march toward extinction, the Ardenese governing body comes to a drastic decision. They gather together at their capital city, Rhomane, and place their remaining genetic heritage in a vast underground ark, in the care of an advanced AI construct called the Architect. Its mission? To use Rhomane’s dwindling reserves and safeguard their race by reaching out across time and space toward those who might be in a position to help reseed a devastated world at some time in the future.

Soldiers from varying eras and vastly different backgrounds find themselves snatched away from Earth at the moment of their passing and transported to the far side of the galaxy. Thinking they have been granted a reprieve, their relief turns to horror when they discover they face a stark ultimatum:

Fight or die!

Despite a host of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, this group of misfits manages to turn the tide against a relentless foe, only to discover the true cost of victory might exact a price they are unwilling to pay.

If you like your science fiction fast paced and gritty, full of realistic action and dark humor in the face of overwhelming odds, then The IX is definitely the epic for you.

Fans of Julian May’s “Saga of the Pliocene Exiles,” Robert Heinlein’s “Have Space Suit, Will Travel”, and Jerry Pournelle’s “Janissaries Series” will love this tale. It combines the divergent elements of the past, present, and future, and blends them together into a slick and stylish package that will leave you breathless and hungry for more.

The Must Read Science Fiction Adventure of 2015.

Sometimes, death is only the beginning of the adventure…

A Negative World?

First, an apology for changing topics after I promised someone this week would be about outlining.  I moved that to mid-March because I’ve had a lot on my mind.  This probably breaks my ‘no personal’ stuff, but I really need to vent on a few things.

Is the world becoming more negative?  I see it every day.  People put incredible amounts of energy to tear down something they dislike or disagree with.  You hate my favorite TV show?  Then war has been declared.  We see a topic from a different view?  I should punch you in the face.  This celebrity said something I don’t like?  I hope they die in a plane crash with these other people I don’t like.  Is this what the world has always been like or is it steadily going in this direction?

I’m not even talking about a single area.  This came to me when I saw that people were drawn more to subjects that they could vent about.  Forget paling around and having fun since people, myself included, tend to simply want to explode.  Note that I included myself there.  I don’t even realize when I do it, but I’m going to try to stop myself.  It’s a waste of energy that could be better spent on creating something of joy and supporting things that make me happy.  This isn’t to say I won’t vent, but that shouldn’t be a person’s most popular form of communication.

Is it the Internet?  I know this makes me sound like an old fart (apologies to old farts out there.  I’m sure you’re lovely people.), but it does seem to hold a power over us.  We can say whatever we want, whenever we want, and there are very few consequences.  That person you’re calling a worthless piece of shit?  You can’t see them cry and there’s no risk of them punching you in the face over Facebook.  Most of us are a lot more careful with our words and opinions when such consequences can occur.  Yet we can rant and rave online then wander off without a second thought of our effect.  This isn’t the entire issue, but I do think human beings are finding this ‘loophole’ in behavior to unleash their stress and negativity into the air.  Whatever happened to going out with friends and talking about your worries over pizza?  Even a phone call could work if people even remember that their iPhone has such a capability.  After all, there’s a lot of context and verbal cues that you don’t get when typing and that might be a reason for a lot of the negativity.

To avoid defeating my purpose by being negative, I’m going to try to end this on a positive note.  I guess this is called an affirmation.  My goal is to be positive and not blindly rant about everything.  I wish to find middle ground and understanding with those that disagree with me instead of making enemies.  I don’t want to contribute to an atmosphere that is starting to make me physically ill.  Hopefully this will make me happy and make those around me happy, which in turn will make those around them happy.

Life’s too short to waste it be negative.  Also, if we become ghosts then being negative would turn us into angry spirits and that’s not good . . . Yes, I have ‘Supernatural’ on the television.  Why?

African Me and Satellite TV by Jo Robinson

I received a free copy of this ebook in an online giveaway.  These are my honest views of this novel.

AfricanMeTVJo Robinson’s novel, African Me and Satellite TV, is a most compelling and powerful novel, with a wide range of characters drawn with deep emotions, and a message some may find uncomfortable.  Which is not necessarily a bad thing.  Jo’s main character, Suzette Hertzog, is caring, artistic, somewhat emotional, and extremely inhibited.  She has lived with pushing down her abhorrence of the way whites treat blacks in Zimbabwe ever since she saw “her father punch their driver in the face.  Her 10-year-old heart had frozen in her chest, and over the next few days of listening to her parent’s vicious racist rants over his suspected, but unproven, theft of five litres of fuel, and watching him sobbing, denying it, begging them not to make him go, she finally decided to stop looking.”

What Should You Write about? (Topic & Genre)

Very insightful and helpful for those starting on a new project.

WHAT SHOULD YOU WRITE ABOUT?

When you decide to write a book, you’re faced with important decisions:

  • Which genre should you choose? Which subgenre?
  • What topic should you write about within that subgenre?
  • What features will your story have?

But there are other important considerations that go along with these, which are often overlooked:

  • Is there an audience for what I really want to write about?
  • Could I attract more readers by writing about something slightly different?
  • What are my marketing assets?

You’re not the only person who will read your book, right? At least you hope not!

So if you only write what you want to read, doesn’t that seem somewhat selfish?

You’re a reader, too, of course, which may help you, as a writer, develop a style and feel for how to write.

The challenge is to find the right balance.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR GENRE &…

Lost My Mojo Goals

(The song above caught me on Pandora, TV, and the radio every day this week.  So I’m posting it here to make it go away.  Added some Fullmetal Alchemist in too because.)

This was the week I was going to dive into Book 10.  I was going to get back into my writing and get some stuff done before the upcoming Winter Break, which is totally different than Christmas Break and 1.5 months before Spring Break.  Yup.  That was the plan . . . I failed on 5 out of 6 goals.  All I did was post the excerpts on the website and I’m not even sure I did it right.  Only reason I ‘failed’ the consoling of the son is because he ‘called’ his new friends every day on an old cellphone to tell them about his day.  So in his mind, they weren’t very far away.

I can’t think of a clear way to explain myself right now without garnering some level of pity or being so vague that people ask for a ‘dislike’ button.  To put it simply, I just can’t get myself to touch Legends of Windemere.  Probably just need some time away from it all, but I’m having mental blockage and, to be honest, fear.  Maybe I’m thrown off because this sensation is new to me.  I’ve never been blocked by my own mind for more than a day and that was usually because it was too busy fiddling with an idea.  I’ve never really had a problem accessing the imagination or been too afraid to write a story.  This coming week might be good for me to shrug off whatever this is.

Did I accomplish nothing this week?  I begrudgingly admit that I got some stuff done.

  • I wrote preliminary blurbs for the published books that will be better than the last.  The one for Beginning of a Hero should be up, but I need to run the others through a few people first before putting them up.
  • I went through the future idea list and tried to carve things up.  The thing is still at 35 series and one-shots though.  It seems trashing Project Phoenix and keeping the parts I liked simply undid what few things I tossed.  On the plus side, that 16-19 book monster isn’t hanging over my head.  Just a few trilogies and one-shots from the survivors.
  • I figured out why one book is named what it’s named.  I’ll be spending tonight trying to urge my hands to write it down.  The few times I’ve tried have been met with me just wandering off or freezing.
  • I came up with a new character/series that I might write over the summer.  It’s a short story type of thing that is reminiscent of the old Conan the Barbarian stories.  I go more into detail during my Wednesday rant.  This will be a moody blog week even if my demeanor improves.

So that was my week and it could just be loneliness.  I miss the guests who were here last week and feel like we didn’t have nearly enough time.  Might be that I feel a little lost, which makes the most amount of sense to me.

Now what are the goals for this week?

  1. Recover my mind and try to get myself back into writing shape.
  2. Spend time with son.

That’s it.  Nothing complicated because I don’t think I can handle it.  If I can’t get back in the game by the following Monday then I’ve got no idea what to do.  Probably just a wait and see what happens, but I’m hoping it doesn’t go that route.  Fingers crossed and hope everyone has a fun weekend.

Addition:  Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone.
