…for an Author, a wee literary brain burst every now and then can be amazingly satisfying…

…as with many of yeez Lads and Lassies of Blog Land who scribble stories and novels, I’m often asked where the ideas come from for the plots… to date, each of the four books in my Jack Calder crime thriller series has begun in my head as an ‘ending’… I prefer to have at least a rough notion how it all ends… the trip on the way there can take the narrative down many a twisty-turvy path… and that’s before yeez even consider what the characters get up to when they decide where yer novel’s going… another quirk of mine is to get a title as early as possible… that kinda lends a bit of a ‘persona’ to the book for me…

…as some of yeez may be aware, my excellent publishers, Crooked Cat Publishing will be flashing the newly-minted fourth in the series, KILLER CITY, in August…

Panama

My rating:  4  of  5  stars

Plot
(by Amazon)

Ethan and Coop are sent to the construction zone along the Panama Canal. They have some experience with strange phenomenon, but nothing prepared them for this.

They are faced with civil war, Carlist pretenders to the thrones of France and Spain, an invading Spanish army, and another from Hell itself. They’ll be lucky to survive, let alone take care of anything while they’re down there.

This story is based upon the construction of the canal, Panamanian independence, international cooperation, and a few celebrity cameos. Even the magic takes on an international flavor.

Ghosts and Voodoo are one thing, but they have no idea what waits along the isthmus.

Genre(s):  Paranormal, Adventure

Series:  n.a.

Length:  310 pages

Release date:  2014-05-08

Teaser Tuesday: Having Fun with Yola

Choosing this at the last minute and going with more Yola Biggs silliness.  How did this happen?  What is happening?  Who is the other woman?  Find out when The Merchant of Nevra Coil is release in August.  Of course that’s barring any delays since we all know I have bad deadline luck.  Something always goes askew.

by Kayla Matt

by Kayla Matt

Yola whistles as her eyes flutter open, their color shifting from white to red to a swirling pink. She sits up to look around the strange landscape of dark stone, moist sand, and cracked coral. Turning her head to the sky, the goddess is amused that all she can see is the inky darkness of the ocean depths. Fish and other marine creatures lie dead throughout the circular area, including an enormous hammerhead shark. More of the predators are swimming on the other side of the watery dome that surrounds the patch of dry, uneven land. Yola walks to the edge of the clearing and reaches out to pet one of the deadly animals, but a shock of pain shoots through her body when she touches the wall. She stomps her foot like an impudent child, which shakes the ground and sends a ripple throughout the ocean.

Curious and bored, the trapped deity claps her hands over her head and hears someone imitate the noise behind her. Turning only her upper body, Yola sees Aeriel standing a few yards away. The other woman’s body is in the same position as the Chaos Goddess, so her face is hidden from view. When Yola spins her lower half to match her torso, her companion imitates the maneuver and wavers on her feet. The green-haired deity moves in a circle, which is matched by her rival and reveals that Aeriel is still unconscious. Recognizing the fun she can have, the Chaos Goddess stretches her arms. In perfect synch, the Insanity Goddess performs every step, scratch, and silly dance that Yola does. With a cruel smile, the mischievous woman gets Aeriel to tie her red and silver hair in large knots. Wondering how far she can go, she pulls her arm off and squeals with joy when the snoring deity does the same.

“Limb fight!” Yola shouts, swinging her arm like a club. She forgets about the other side of this new game, so she is stunned when her enemy smacks her in the face. “This isn’t fun anymore. I want to go home, but we’re tangled. Wake up, little goddess. Come on. At least say something and entertain me.”

Yola reattaches her arm and swiftly approaches the other goddess, the two nearly ramming into each other. Aeriel remains unconscious even when she is tickled and her rival licks her cheek with a long, sloppy tongue. Every action is repeated on the Chaos Goddess, who gets annoyed and smacks the other woman across the face. She is ready for the incoming attack and ducks quickly, which is mimicked by her puppet and causes the blow to connect. Feeling more malicious and frustrated by the second, Yola searches for a tool and grins when she finds a large, dead sea urchin. She backs away to lead her enemy to the spikey creature, being careful not to trip and ruin her plan. When Aeriel is in position, she is made to pick up the dangerous animal and slap it on her rear. The spines pierce the silver gown of the Insanity Goddess and her crimson eyes fly open from the jolt of pain.

Review: Infinite Waters by Nicholas C. Rossis #sciencefiction #shortstories #suspense

Infinite Waters by Nicholas C. Rossis (CLICK FOR AMAZON SITE)

Infinite Waters by Nicholas C. Rossis (CLICK FOR AMAZON SITE)

Over the weekend, I read Infinite Waters and now I review it:

All of these stories have great twists, which is why I read it in one sitting.  Not that the collection is very long, but short stories tend to make it easy to put a book down.  The story that runs between the others helps since I kept wondering what would happen there.  I was very impressed with how well the characters came across when you’re only with them for a few pages.  It’s really hard to pick a favorite, but ‘Two’s A Crowd’ is the one where I felt the most amount of suspense.  That one is where the author really pulled out a ‘Twilight Zone’ type of vibe.

I would highly recommend this collection.

Questions 3: Forging a World

Carl Sagan Quote (Supposedly. Internet isn't always honest.)

Carl Sagan Quote (Supposedly. Internet isn’t always honest.)

I’m still on the road here, which means I needed to think of a post that would be fun and not require me to be around until later.  Then I thought of leaving something that stirred the imagination.

Below, you will find 3 questions.  I’ll be doing this on Wednesday and Friday too because I thought of 3 topics.  You can answer in the comments or on your own blog depending on how much you want to say.  If you choose the latter then please link back to here, so I can find my way to it when I settle in for a lengthy email, comment, tweet, and whatever run.

This topic is: WORLD BUILDING

  1. If you could create a fictional ‘world’, what would it be like?  Would it be similar to Earth or entirely different?  (This doesn’t only mean fantasy worlds.  For example, you can be a crime book author and describe your version of Miami.)
  2. How would your ‘world’ differ from the real world?  If many differences then what would be the two biggest ones?
  3. What kind of stories would occur in your ‘world’?

Just have fun with it.  Use this to show off something you have or come up with something new.

An Adventure Ends

Just a few hours and I’m on the road for a long trip.  The wife has work tomorrow, the kid has school tomorrow, and I really need a haircut.  My plan was to start editing tomorrow, but it might be delayed a day.  Need to get a bit more sleep and my son is so off his schedule that things may be rough for a while.

The new plan is to design characters for the ‘road trip/altered USA’ idea.  Got something for the female lead, which leaves me with 6-7 characters that will have unique outfits.  Maybe.  Modern clothes will probably be around tough some characters will take the opportunity to be unique.  Just have to remind myself that the post-apocalyptic character in a top hat has been done to death.  I have a new idea too, but I think I’ll put it where it originally was.  Puts a future series up to 10 books, but it’s a comedy/Windemere history/adventure, so it all works out.  Need to double check since those notes aren’t here.

People have asked about the trip and if I’ll share stories.  Several people on this side of the computer have told me not to talk about it.  All I should say is ‘things happened and it was a fun experience’.  Yes, but I will tell one story because it may be the highlight for my son and I feel like making a warning.  If you didn’t know, like I did, 100% polyester clothing should not be worn around fireworks.  People can already see where this is going.

My son has a Captain America shirt that is 100% polyester and he loves it.  So he wore it for July 4th.  He was given sparklers for the first time and was using one under the very close supervision of mommy.  He wanted to do tricks like her and his aunt, but she was making sure he kept his arm out.  The kid has a habit of bending his arm when twirling the sparkler and we didn’t want his face to get hit by a spark.  We didn’t expect a spark to hit his shoulder and melt the shirt.  He freaked out (for good reason) and we got the shirt off him before taking him inside.  It didn’t catch fire, but three holes were melted and the ‘hot plastic’ left a red mark on his shoulder.  It’s still there too.  To the little guy’s credit, he still wanted to watch the sparklers and fireworks show.  We think he was more scared than hurt, which makes sense.

I sent an email to the place I bought the shirt from since I couldn’t find a manufacturer contact.  Just wanted to mention that there is no warning on the shirt and I don’t remember one on the tags.  Even if there was one on the tags, you take those off and can forget over the years.  Not looking for anything other than letting them know about this possibility, which cold have been a freak accident.

Anyway, that’s a story.  Rest was driving, zoo, car show, family, food, and a Boston Terrier that my son doesn’t want to say good-bye too.  I’ll be back on schedule tomorrow.  The Internet has been good, but doesn’t always open pages that I click on.  See everyone later or tomorrow.

Book Blurb

Meet Princess Columba of Illinowa. She’s a magician, a scholar, and is currently the heir to the throne…but she wants no part of it. Because she’s royalty, she’s had trouble meeting men, and she’s tired of dealing with people in search of a title rather than herself.
