Searching for Identity in the Shattered States

Lloyd-  Wasn’t the author supposed to write about this?

Cassidy-  I guess he felt we should talk . . . identity.  Seems he realized during the final edits that the two of us do a little identity seeking throughout the story.

Lloyd-  This seems oddly boring with just the two of us.

Cassidy- We could invite Katie, Commodus, or Emily over.

*silence*

Cassidy- You’re thinking of an ass, but I’m not sure which one.

Lloyd-  I infect your mind with the image of your naked ex-bo *gun pressed to mouth* Dis tases ike ister keen!

Cassidy- Getting back to the topic here.  I guess through all of the action and comedy, we do find ourselves in a way.  Part of my story is honoring my mother who set a pretty high standard for me.

Lloyd-  And I’m new to the world.  Just an innocent babe cast into a scary world.

Cassidy-  Surprisingly, that’s kind of true since you have no idea what’s out there.  Even I’m in the dark since I haven’t traveled everywhere.  Most of what I know is rumors.

Lloyd-  I have to admit that it’s hard to find a purpose beyond survival out here.  You have to wonder if that’s enough for an audience.  How much change and evolution could we go through in such a harsh world?

Cassidy-  Especially since we don’t really care about improving it.  Can heroes who aren’t really heroes evolve?

Lloyd-  Every human changes due to their circumstances.  For us, it might mean becoming darker or dying.  I don’t see either of us becoming very nice.

Cassidy-  Though I think we do change a bit by the end.

Lloyd- Even more if people like us enough for a sequel.  So many adventures that we can have around here.  I’d say more but spoilers are punishable by death.  At least in my world.  You have no idea how many people I’ve had to kill because it took me too long to see ‘Titanic’.

Cassidy-  For the last time, everybody knew that the ship would sink!  That was an actual historical event!

Lloyd-  Of course it all makes sense now.  I mean there were a lot of clues at the beginning of the movie, but it could have been a trick.

Cassidy- Shut the fuck up, Lloyd.

Only 2 days left to pick up a 99 cent copy of Blood Orange

Unknown's avatarDon Massenzio

I’m excited to announce, for a limited time, my latest thriller, Blood Orange, is on sale for the low price of 99 cents.

Why am I doing this?

Originally, this book was set to launch on November 13, 2015. Promotional events were scheduled. The book was going to be heavily promoted through the holiday shopping season to try to maximize sales.

If you remember that 11/13/15 date, it was also the date that terrorists attacked multiple locations in Paris, France. One of those locations was a sports venue during a soccer match. Blood Orange focuses on a very similar event. I thought it would be in bad taste to launch and promote the book so soon after this tragedy. It was likely devastating to potential sales, but I felt that it was the right thing to do.

I started a much more subtle promotional campaign at the beginning of…

Questions 3: An Author Would Understand

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

I’ve seen a lot of memes and social media comments about how ‘an author would understand’.  This covers writer’s block, talking to yourself, needing that perfect space, and other quirks of the creative.  One thing I don’t really see is any author trying to explain it to those who don’t understand.  I certainly try and fail outside of the computer.  So let’s see if we can share our explanations.

  1. What makes you love being an author?
  2. What about being an author gives you a headache?
  3. What does imagination mean to you?

His Revenge front final

Normally I don’t do a lot of promotion of my books here on Fiction Favorites. Yes, the sidebar contains everything anyone needs to know about the content and sales links to His Revenge and My GRL. Now and then it is necessary to interrupt regular programming with a commercial message.

Today I’m giving all you buyers who are heading over to your favorite e-book outlet to buy His Revenge permission to STAND DOWN.

DO NOT BUY HIS REVENGE TODAY. You see I’m running a $0.99 cent sale on His Revenge Kindle edition beginning on March 3rd until March 6th including an Ereader News Today feature. Yes, that is $0.99 US and €0.99 in the UK. I’ll provide more detail, but for now, HOLD OFF BUYING HIS REVENGE until March 3rd (and then buy all you want after all it is only $0.0000107 per word)

Post-Apocalyptic Dystopian Thing-A-Ma-Jig

Mad Max

Mad Max

I probably should have written this post earlier, but I was still thinking about it.  I’ve been calling Crossing Bedlam a Rated-R post-apocalyptic action comedy thing or some combination of that for a while.  Once or twice I’ve thought of it as a dystopia, which might not be a real word according to all spellcheckers.  This is the opposite of a utopia in that it’s a fictional world that is a terrible place to live.  I think Hunger Games, Mad Max, and Maze Runner count for this.

And that’s what I was thinking about really.  It seems that one of the standards of this genre is that humanity sucks and falls back on primal urges once society collapses.  Probably true for reality, but it never seems to recover even after years of things circling the drain.  You rarely see a post-apocalyptic world where things are recovering or something new has appeared.  Sure, you get a handful of protagonists who remain somewhat innocent and are trying to revive the human spirit.  Maybe even free people from an oppressive dictator or whatever it is they’re doing in Maze Runner.  Cure a disease through torture and death?

In Crossing Bedlam, I definitely had some of this in there, but I think I went a little too nice on humanity.  Previous posts have mentioned that are groups who tried to keep some pieces of society going.  Also, I thought that after ten years, some level of stability would be appearing in various regions.  Don’t forget the fact that this is a world where post-apocalyptic fiction existed before the collapse.  So people fell back on those sources to figure out what to do or what not to do.  I think me retaining this genre’s existence within the world changed everything.  It isn’t like a horror movie or a zombie show where those things never existed to give people an idea of what might happen.  At least with fantasy, the internal stories about dragons and magic are current events instead of fiction.

This was actually one of the more difficult things about writing this book.  Deciding how far into the crapper I sent the country would determine the dangers and help that the heroes would run into.  If nothing recovered then there would be very few allies, especially those that would willing help.  Too much recovery and it basically be a casual drive through abandoned ruins with a bored serial killer riding shotgun.  Lloyd probably wouldn’t be bored for long.  For the purpose of the story and my desire to have a lot of silly fun, I tried to find a decent middle ground.  Some places are worse than others and not all background humans fall into either oppressed rabble or power-hungry dictator.

Now, I did try to think about why this genre seems to always be so bleak.  Probably because that gives characters only one way to go if they survive and the audience will wonder if they could do the same.  Yet, I do think it goes a little too far at times and touches on a sense of cynicism.  Might not be the author exactly, but a feeling that the majority of mankind would crumble into anarchy and only a handful of people would keep their wits.  Kind of wonder if it would be the opposite where those currently in power would freak out since their purpose no longer exists and the average person will find a way to survive anyway.  Though recent history does show that humans suffer from a very big herd mentality when emotions run high.  That’s why I have Cassidy mention the first year or two were a nightmare due to non-stop riots.  Again, you don’t always see what happens when mankind regains their sanity and try to recover.

So, what are your thoughts on the dystopia genre and how humanity tends to be portrayed?

While you think about that, grab a copy of CROSSING BEDLAM!
It’ll make Lloyd so very happy.  🙂

Teaser Tuesday: Return of the Wayward Son

So I’m running into a problem with this thing.  Most of the excerpts from Legends of Windemere will continue spoilers and I don’t think I can get away with more Crossing Bedlam due to the same problem.  I was considering posting the Ichabod Brooks story after the next Windemere book comes out, which means I have March to worry about.  April can have excerpts from the new release (Tribe of the Snow Tiger) like I’m doing today.

Now there are a few things I can do here:

  • Stop the teasers.
  • Alter them to avoid the spoilers.
  • Ask if there is a certain character you want highlighted to help me pick things out.

Always happy to get feedback on where to go with things.  For now, enjoy the opening of the next Windemere book, which will be out in either April or May.  Also click on the cover to visit the Family of the Tri-Rune Amazon page.

Mark’s Writing Process – Patent Pending

By Mark Aberdeen

Writing isn’t my full-time job. In my day job I manage a bunch of engineers for a telecommunication’s company and it blocks off a good portion of my week. I also have a wife, house, three dogs, obligations and a honey-do list with a never-ending list of home repairs that need to be done. When I come up with a story idea, it can be very annoying. First, my characters don’t know how to shut up and go away. They nag…
