Homer and Bart Simpson
You know, Homer Simpson isn’t exactly wrong here. While kids get the summer off from school, most adults don’t get the time off from work. Even if you have a job that stops at the end of June, you need to bring money in, so you get another job to cover the gap until the main one starts up again. We’re allowed to enjoy these months as children only to stare wistfully out a window at the weather when we’re adults. Sounds oddly cruel and soul-crushing. Not like we get extra vacation time or adjusted hours. In fact, many people end up spending more because you need to pay for either a full-day babysitter or a full-day camp. Adults really got the short end of the stick here. Let’s do a funny comparison and see how it goes.
- Kids get to run around and play during the day without a care in the world. Adults get to run around the office and curse the God of Paper Jams. They possess all the cares in the world, which is why they’re sweating even in air conditioning.
- Adults don’t have to worry about a big change in their schedule because it’s the same routine, but with different weather reports. Kids have no plan or schedule, so their whims are fully unleashed. Trouble will ensue and many will end the day complaining that they didn’t get to do the one thing they really wanted to do. (Note: The thing they wanted to do was jump off the roof and into an inflatable pool.)
- Kids can sleep in and have oodles of time to have fun or relax. Adults find that time is inconsistent. Lunch hours are really 2 minutes long while the final hour of the day is actually half a week. You’ve been brought to the point where you think gremlins (Peggy in Accounting and Wesley in Billing) are making the clocks change speed depending on what is happening.
- Adults continue making the money necessary for food, shelter, utilities, clothes, and gas to get to the job. Kids spend nearly all of their money within the first two weeks of the summer. The ice cream man has now added diamond studs in place of the decimals on his pricing menu. Those with allowances get a little farther, but now they are learning what it’s like to be in debt since they got multiple advances from their parents.
- Kids enjoy the sun to get Vitamin D and a sunburn that will barely slow them down. Adults are stuck getting whatever vitamins come from standing too close to the copier, which no longer has a cover. It looks like they have a sunburn in various places, but the dermatologist has already given them an ointment to clear that rash up. Nobody notices the smell any more.
- Adults work so hard that they learn to cherish what few days and nights of fun that they can get their hands on. Kids cherish every minute of the day and don’t realize how good they have it. Oh, we won’t tell them. Everyone needs to fall into the same trap for society to continue.
I’m sure everyone has their own decision on who has it best or that nobody does. Really depends on the life you live. Enjoy and hope everyone is having a fun summer.

Every. day. I have a hard time passing on life wisdom to my kids sometimes, when they notice being young is more fun.

Good thing we aren’t trying to improve society to help them avoid the mental issues of adulthood. Fixing things would just be crazy and responsible.

Ha ha! Sad but true. I remember complaining to my parents that I didn’t have anything to do. I quickly learned not to complain, because chores were given right after the complaint was uttered. 😃

Charles, good post on the differences. Definitely, harder on the adult end! Eye opening to remember how it was in my family with growing up kids. Now, my married with kids granddaughters are in the middle of it! 😳🤨😒 Christine

I like this post it’s funny. I like all of the cartoons about kids and their parent’s summer and how the kids will miss the adults. I also like the other one about the duckling wanting to go to bed. Great post
