Author Comforts: A Schedule to Keep Me Sane

This week I’m going to open the door to a few the things I use to get me through a project . . . week . . . day?  These are mostly going to be discussion-like posts since these things are different for every author.

Here is a tentative schedule of my day since I’ve seen a few and felt like that’s the best place to start:

5:59 AM-  Wake up before the 6 AM alarm to grumble and prepare to kick deep sleeping wife out of bed.

6 AM-  Heave ho, woman!

6:01-6:45 AM-  Check weather, prep son’s lunch for school, bathroom, and do email/blog/sales check.

6:46-7:30 AM-  Get son dressed, fed, and move all of his Thomas trains downstairs for him to play with while waiting for the bus.  He helps get paper, make grandma coffee, and mix his chocolate milk.

7:30-8:15 AM-  Son on bus and time to finish email/blog/sales.  Where the hell did these 20 other emails come from?!

8:16 AM-  Check into work out clothes.  Get distracted by text, FB message, or email.

9-10 AM-  Bike, shower, grab breakfast, and head out for errands if need be.  (Going to assume I don’t have any.)

10:01 AM-12:30 PM-  Write, outlining, and handling social media while be routinely distracted by a variety of things.  Always ends with cursing that I didn’t get as much done as I expected.

12:31 PM-  One more Youtube video, I swear!

12:32-1 PM- Make, bring in, or reheat something for lunch.  Consider working while eating, but figure I need the mental break.  Back to YouTube.

1:01-3:30 PM-  Back to wri . . . phone call . . . now back to . . . where did all these emails come from? . . . back to w . . . that’s a lot of WordPress comments . . . when was the last time I went to the bathroom? . . . got a page done! . . . THE BUS!!!!!

3:31-3:40 PM-  Unpack son’s backpack to read forms from school and notes from teacher.  Clean out his lunch bag and put snacks in for the next day.  Write part of note back to teacher if response is needed.

3:41-4 PM-  Homework for son.  Difficulty varies.

4:01-5 PM-  Set little guy up with dinner and his YouTube videos.  Check email, prep tweets for on Hootsuite, handle comments, and possibly do writing.  More than likely, I will be called to computer room every 5 minutes because he wants a different video and he hasn’t figured out the search function.  Also may be called in for snacks and drinks.  One fight about if he needs to go potty.

5:01-6 PM- Wrangle little guy off computer and play with him.  Make dinner if I’m the one cooking for the day.  Sometimes he sends me back to my laptop.  Usually it’s just sitting and playing.

6:01-6:30 PM-  Potty, tooth brushing, and shower time for son.

6:31-7 PM-  Night time YouTube videos.

7:01-whenever PM-  Hand son off to wife, go back to room, handle emails/comments/Facebook messages, and get some writing done.  Maybe watch Daily Show.

That’s pretty much the average day.

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

I understand completely. Let me tell you…I thought it would be easier when all kids were grown and out of the house…nope, it’s not…so many distractions!

    • I guess the best one can do is minimize the distractions. Something will always turn up as long as we live with other people. Yes, I’ve looked into the price of a secluded cabin out of fun. Those things don’t have Wifi, so I’d be going crazy without Pandora.

  2. Seems like all of life interferes with us when we want to write. Loved this.

  3. Thanks for the fascinating glimpse into your life! I’m trying to remember which visitor was that had said “congrats Charles and Nicholas, you guys are living the dream” 😀

Also, as someone who’s probably responsible for half the WP comments, I apologize… 🙂

  4. You need to put some restroom breaks into your schedule, too. (At first I thought you had one, but it turned out to be “tea.”) 🙂

Except for the kid, this almost sounds like my work day. I start off thinking I know what I’ll be working on. By the end of the day, I realize I never worked on the project I needed to work. Instead, I was distracted by emails, phone calls and office visits, mostly centering around other people’s projects and esoteric data questions .. which I hate (the esoteric data questions). I wanted to believe that writing/working at home would be better, but you’ve ruined my fantasy, Charles 😉 Oh, and, great post 🙂

I’ve been distracted since I was born, I guess. I can even distract myself 😦
I’ve had to change my schedule – drastically – since we started watching an infant three mornings a week and a toddler two afternoons and on and on. I don’t know what my schedule is now – notice the time? I obviously haven’t determined a bed time! I write early afternoons and late evenings. I try to check WordPress once a day, but don’t always make it. Sigh. Where’s the champagne?

    • I’m learning that schedules almost routinely fall apart once other people are added into the mix. Unless it’s a highly structured office schedule, you’re going to have delays and distractions. It’s why we fear deadlines so much. Those things are so hard to meet.

Good luck with all those kids. And finding the champagne.
