Druid of the Orchid Path (April is Poetry Month)

Deep within the Umbral Woods

As the morning sun appears

The druid of the dawn awakens

Sitting among the orchids

Where not a petal he has harmed

Carefully he stands

Draped in his mottled cloak

That merges him with trees

Stretching out the kinks

From sleeping on his haunches

A wand emerges from his sleeve

Thin and gnarled by time

He waves it at the orchids

Sending a shower of dew

To the skies above

As the water starts to fall

Feeding its former hosts

The druid drifts away

Stopping at the clearing’s edge

Where he is not allowed to pass

He can hear the orchids singing

While he whispers to a pine

Asking for a precious cone

That gently falls

Into his waiting hand

He mumbles a short prayer

As he taps the cone with wand

Causing both to glow

Bright and amber light

Weaving in the air

With all his strength

He hurls the cone into the air

Pushing it above the trees

Where it soundlessly explodes

Sending seeds to all horizons

The day passes on

As the druid sends more seeds

Orchids and pines

Oaks and grasses

He gives them all a chance to live

A yawn escapes his lips

His energy is spent

The sun sinks into bed

As the druid returns to his patch

To sleep among the purple petals

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

Love this poem…believe it or not, it reminds me when I used to play D&D with my youngest…he created a new character for me…. 🙂

    • Another fellow D&D player? Well, sort of. I’ve long since retired my dice. The inspiration for the poem was my son when he was two. He had found a toy sword from when I was a kid and it was taller than him, but light enough for him to carry with one hand. Then he claimed a large, green watering can. So, he just wandered the backyard with these things and pretended to water the plants.

wonderful source of information…my son still has his dice for the moment, but alas he plays with his friends at college…doesn’t do live d&d now…he’d taken up medieval sword play and is studying for his masters in history.

      • Nice combo. I did fencing and creative writing while D&Ding my way through college. The series I’m writing is based on the college game that I joined my freshman year.

I should tell him…he would like to be a writer, and guess what…loves fantasy..one of his favorites was Drizzt…well i like him too. 😉

      • I liked Drizzt. I actually was more into Danilo Thann and Arilyn Moonblade. There was a sinister elf that was an anti-hero too, but I forgot his name. Craulnober?
