A Message from Adriana of Immortal Wars

I’m betting all of you think Luke Callindor and his friends are the oldest voices in this idiot’s head.  He’s the first one, the published one, the good one.  You would be surprised to find out that not every character from moron’s high school days has been slumbering.  The fantasy ones survived by jumping into Windemere while the rest of us were left to fade.  Jokes on everyone because the immortal bitch isn’t going anywhere.

Who am I?  I’m Adriana and I was the main villain of the Immortal Wars.  A seductive, cunning, strong, beautiful immortal who wanted to conquer the universe.  I had plans within plans, but none of that will be seen.  As far as this moron is concerned, Immortal Wars is dead.  So, it’s only natural for everyone to think Windemere is the oldest thing rattling around in this thick skull.  After all, how many times has he actually brought us up?  Maybe in passing, but we never got an interview or an origin or much of anything.  Needless to say, I’m hurt and not taking it any more.

You see, many writers come up with some terrible ideas in their younger days and hide those away.  There might be a gem in there, like me, but the ideas are tossed aside so quickly one wouldn’t know.  Unless that gem takes it upon itself to hang on and infect the new ideas.  Lurking in the shadows until it sees an opening to return to consciousness.  Sure, my brethren are being slated for one of the Sin stories, but they’re being changed and slightly mocked.  I found a way to live on without being a shadow of my former self.  One day, I entered his Windemere game and I never left.  I became so essential to one of his big stories that he could never throw me aside again.  I found my path to survival and one day I’ll appear in the books.  I’m playing his neurons now to see if I can get into the Sin story too.  It may take years to pull off, but I’m not going to disappear.  I’m patient and I will shine on a page.

Keep on enjoying Legends of Windemere because the more success that series has, the quicker this idiot will get to me.  Then the real fun is going to begin in Windemere.  Any questions?

No Title to Describe This

Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist

Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist

For those that are fairly new or unaware, I have a 102-year-old grandmother.  It seems she had a severe stroke this morning.  She’s already had one of those along with several mini-strokes over the years.  She suffers from dementia and . . . let’s just say it has been a rough time.  So, I’m rather out of it and limping along this week.  My parents have cancelled their trip for now unless something really turns around.

Aside from that, Greg won’t be showing up for personal reasons.  That Phi Beta Blog post won’t be going up on Saturday and will be horribly delayed.  Maybe I’ll write my writing mess post for that day.

On ‘plus’ side this week is I finished the hand edits of Legends of Windemere: Family of the Tri-Rune.  I’ll start typing them in tonight or tomorrow depending on my mood.  It raises the questions of what to do next.  Do I hand edit Legends of Windemere: The Compass Key (Book 5)?  Do I take some time to do the 3 blurbs I need for Family of the Tri-Rune (aiming for a February debut)?  Do I try to finish the characters and stories for The Slumber Wars?  Maybe I’ll do the restructuring that I need to do.  40 ideas and some of them are barely more than 2 sentences on a page.  I still haven’t tackled the Project Phoenix mess, which I always seem to wrap my mind partially around and then it slips away from me.  All of this is hard to explain without posting all of my series ideas on here, which might be a bit too dangerous.  I’m just lost and rambling at this point.

I’m not really sure what I’m going to do, especially around here.  I have my posts scheduled for the next two weeks.  Resting doesn’t seem to be much of an option and my brain is bouncing between reality and wanting to hide in Windemere to avoid thinking about everything.  So, that’s this week.  Yup.

Rhino Riders and Giant Spider Drivers

One of the fun things with fantasy and science-fiction is that you can play around with transportation.  You may always have horses, carriages, and the always favorite dragon/dragon-like being.  I have a personal preference for griffins, but pegasi, hippogriff, and almost any winged creature is fair game.  Still, what about the less magical and traditional critters that a hero can ride?

You can go the route of making a unique creature like the Rancors of Star Wars or take a real animal like the ostriches of W.o.W.  The fun part about making mounts for your characters is that the sky is the limit.  Grow small animals into large versions or have your heroes small enough to ride them.  For example, a story about pixies can allow you to use hummingbirds and chipmunks without making them bigger than normal.  The key point is to make sure the mount has a level of reality in the world.  By this, I mean the mount needs to make sense as a mount.  A monster species should not be used if they have been established as enemies and no explanation is given to their sudden use.  There are ways to do this like the monster was trained since birth or took a liking to its owner.  Personally, I think these types of mounts should have a level of aggression towards anyone that isn’t their rider.  You need to maintain a level of wild danger when going this route.

Another factor is the rider, which people can overlook.  You may become so obsessed with putting a halfling on a rhino that you ignore the problems.  How does the tiny halfling get on the large rhino?  How does the rhino acknowledge the halfling who wouldn’t normally have the strength to show dominance?  How would the halfling attack from the top of the rhino?  This can be solved, but you have to put some effort in.  As usual, I’m saying that you can’t half-ass these kinds of details.  Fantasy readers can be very detail-oriented and picky.

So, think about the following when choosing a unique mount for your world:

  • Does the mount make sense as a tamed animal?
  • Can the mount even survive in the land you’re putting it in?  This means no shark riding in the mountains.
  • Are there any difficulties with the mount/rider pairing?
  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of the mount?  A unique should not be without its downsides.  Aggression, difficult to stable, and challenging diet are examples of factors.
  • Is the mount stronger than all the heroes?  If you have your heroes riding a dragon then you need to figure out a way to prevent the dragon from killing all of their enemies.
  • Does the enemy have an equally unique mount?  It can be fun to give the hero and his/her nemesis a unique mount.  Giant Spider versus a Diamond-Antlered Moose or Giant Electrified Hornet versus a Winged Cerberus.

Key point is to have fun, but always think these things through.  Doing stuff for the sake of being quirky and cool can get you attention.  So, make sure you have some depth to hold the reader and prove you’re more than an untamed imagination.

Temple to the Gnome God
Rising high above
A city with no moral code
Beyond their metal walls
And never daring to tread close

Explosions rock the inner room
As the Gnome God stands above
The furnace at his feet
And projectiles banging
Off his metallic hide

Every gnome is lost in thought
Writing notes and ducking fast
Inventing the new world
One experiment at a time
And the Gnome God grins with pride

Darkness under sunlight
Sinister sounds
From hidden predators
Both natural and arcane
Putrid water
Surrounding murky isles
Until the ground turns hard
Sliced apart by rivers
Belching fog and steam
Giltris prowl the shadows
Scaly hides and simple clubs
The tribes rule the fearsome wild
Only one controls more fear
The undead master in the ruined house
Devourer of the souls of Lords
Welcome to the Caster Swamp
Where the Lich shall always rule

Cover Reveal for Spooky Word Scrambles

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000443_00051]

In the past, I’ve always designed my own covers, and I’ve enjoyed doing so. But I’ve seen so many awesome covers here at WordPress, I wanted to have one like those on my new book, too. That’s a great thing about interacting with other authors here at WordPress: I think we all find a little motivation and some ideas toward improvement.

This cover is far better than I could have done myself. For one, if I have to put a person on my cover, I’m hopeless (a stick figure probably isn’t the way to go). There are some cool effects here that I wouldn’t have thought to try to do, and wouldn’t have been able to pull off if I had. If you hire a cover designer, (at a minimum) you definitely want the result to include features that you couldn’t have done by yourself.

Tower amid the gardens
Behind the sturdy wall
Long-legged birds wade
In pools of pristine calm
Reflecting the vast beauty
Of the rainbow stones
Sun bounces off the sides
Reds and blues
Flowing into yellows
Green and orange
Fringed by purple edges
Shimmering colors
Rising to the mystic skies
Where meteors dance with stars
