August Interview: The Lich . . . No Other Description Needed

The Lich by Jason Pedersen

The Lich by Jason Pedersen

  1. If you had the choice of any occupation, what would you actually like to be?
    .
I believe my undead existence prevents me from most jobs.  Given that I am trying to help my master rule Windemere, I’d say an alternative is claiming a territory.  For a necrocaster this means filling an area of wilderness with unique monsters that do your bidding.
    .
  2. Do you have any hobbies that you would like to be able to spend more time on?
    .
Collecting souls to forge a new ring, but that’s still work.  Unlike the champions, I need to keep working.  My goals are not met by reacting to others.
    .
  3. What’s your favorite meal?
    .
A heavily corrupted fireskin would be delicious.
    .
  4. Do you play any musical instruments–if so, what? If you don’t, what would you like to play?
    .
As a mortal, I knew how to play a dulcimer.  That skill no longer has any appeal to me these days.
    .
  5. Is there any one in particular that you wish you didn’t have to be around?
    .
That arrogant, psychotic son of my master.
    .
  6. Have you ever been strongly attracted to someone and it never developed?
    .
Since I’m amused by the meal question, I will ignore this one.  Never ask it again.
    .
  7. Are you surprised about what you have become? Is this what you expected when you were a child?
    .
I went from a mortal man to an undead necrocaster that works for the most powerful being on Windemere.  In other words, I didn’t plan for this when I was a child.  The truth is that my mortal life took an unexpected turn and I followed it to where I am now.  I would not change a thing.
    .
  8. What is your biggest fear?
    .
I will say waking up with mushrooms growing out of my eye sockets.  You can decide if I’m being honest or not.
    .
  9. If you could change places with another person in Windemere, who would it be and why?
    .
    I think I’m done attempting that spell . . . possibly.
    .
  10. What makes you happy?
    .
Rainbows on a warm spring day.  Who created these questions?  I’m happiest when serving my master and bringing his victory closer to a reality.  Killing a Paladin is rather entertaining too.
    .
  11. What does teamwork mean to you?
    .
Something that heroes do, which puts them in the same location.  Sometimes it makes it easier to hit all of them with a spell.  Other times it means I have multiple pests running in opposite directions with a plan.
    .
  12. How would you define honor?
    .
Remaining loyal to those you swore an oath to.  If there are other followers then one must prove to be the most loyal and honorable.  That way you won’t be the one to be eliminated when your master is enraged.
    .
  13. What’s the best way to hunt monsters?
    .
Use live bait, but don’t let them know they’re bait.  Also pray that the Lich who made the monster isn’t nearby.  Those creations take a long time to build or summon.  You people don’t like it when we kill and eat your loved ones, but we only do that for food and parts.  Much more honorable than doing it for revenge.
    .
  14. What’s your first response when someone makes you really, really mad?
    .
Pull their soul out through their eye sockets and feast on it while turning the body into a decaying marionette.
    .
  15. What’s it like working for Charles?
    .
That is not my master’s name.

Post Title Not Found. Brain No Solid. Goals?

This was a busy week with the little guy home, my exile stopping last Sunday, school supply run, a full day at the zoo, and other adventures that ended up being outside.  I think I caught a bug or overdid the heat because Friday saw my stomach turning in its resignation for the afternoon.  Playing a video game with a wildly swinging camera might have been the final nail in the coffin.

I’m still trying to gather my energy too.  Seems I get knocked back down pretty easily, which has me somewhat worried.  This year has been exhausting for some reason and my stress levels rarely drop to normal.  There’s always a crisis or a delay or something that is driving me nuts.  It’s like something always goes wrong, which is probably how the world should go.  Yet it has me wondering about something that is kind of dark and I’m sure will get me in trouble on this side of the computer.

So to any of my lurkers that end up coming at me in the non-Internet world, you should probably skip the next paragraph:

Is it possible for a person to be miserable and negative for so long that they become incapable of being truly happy?  I’m talking that the emotion becomes a source of anxiety because you’re just waiting for it to get taken away.  The ground has been ripped out from under you so often that you prefer the plummeting to the stability.  Only because you don’t really remember any other way.  The white fluffy clouds of life always transform into acid rain even when you try hard to keep them clean.  It gets worse when the people around you are on your case about always being negative.  They either avoid you or criticize you because you’re a downer.  So you put on a smile and try to create a positive outlook by being confident about your path and happy about something.  Then these same people step in to tell you why you shouldn’t be so positive and act like you not planning for the worst case scenario.  Spend a little over half of your life being told you’re either too negative or shouldn’t be so happy.  We’ll see how you come out and how you handle happiness, delays of events, and stress.  So again, I wonder if it’s possible for a person to almost get a phobia of happiness and simply not know what to do with it if it ever turns up.  Even worse, a person believing they aren’t meant to have it.

Now back to whatever else I was going to write.

I got a little outlining and character creation done.  I might be doing this throughout the week since my son has decided that I’m not allowed to read without him being involved.  This turns into him stealing the bookmark, wrestling with my feet, or crawling into my lap to block my view of the book.  He knows to leave the writing stuff alone, but I laugh too much at these antics for him to believe I want him to stop.  I will be thinking about another story/series/stuff this week.  That post might take the place of Teaser Tuesday since I don’t know what to put there.  With The Merchant of Nevra Coil delayed, I don’t really have an urge to put more of it out there.  We’ll see if I get a last minute desire.  For now, I’m leaning toward putting some thought into the other idea(s) and making a Work In Progress post.  Although those don’t usually do well.

In fact, this month has been terrible in terms of blog and sale numbers.  I don’t check nearly as often as I used to, so I might be missing a few things.  My focus is on getting my head together for writing 2 more stories this year.  One is the action/comedy/post-apocalyptic thing and the other is Book 12 of Legends of Windemere.  That means I’ll only have 3 books to go on the big series in terms of first drafts.  It also brings up the question of the post-adventure book.  There will be a loose end as long as things stay as they are, which means a single book to tie it up.  Unfortunately, this would reveal the ending of the series.  So I don’t know if I should do this one or move on to the Windemere vampires.  I guess one thing is that you’ll know the fates of some characters, but not see it in action.  It’s a tough spot.

I’ll finish here.  There’s no goal list because my son is still home.  There are no official plans because we’re going to fly by the seat of our pants.  Now to add some various videos and head out for a play date.

Words waiting for their day
Scheduled to save time
May be the last one types

What happens if I vanish?
No more stories can be told
And all my world goes still

Though it would trudge along
Posts and tweets are ready
Departing from a mind turned off

How long before they notice?
Would one report the loss
Or untouched comments be the clue?

The world is not the way it was
Death takes more time to settle
Because many still have statements
Lurking in the cyber-void

August Interview: Delvin Cunningham the Mercenary Prince

By Kayla Matt

By Kayla Matt

  1. If you had the choice of any occupation, what would you actually like to be?
    .
Something relaxing and low stress.  Maybe one of the griffin riders in Gaia, but that’s still going along a warrior’s path.  Something that isn’t anything like I’m doing now?  I think I could be a decent chef.  Most of my experience is on the road and at the academy, so I’d have to learn more about the trade.  I do have a few simple recipes that my friends enjoy.  Though they say the best part is that my cooking hasn’t put anyone in the hospital.
    .
  2. Do you have any hobbies that you would like to be able to spend more time on?
    .
I like studying and copying maps.  It started when I was a kid and didn’t know where I was.  So I’d go into libraries with a piece of paper and some charcoal.  Then I’d make myself a map from the books.  The people who found me said I didn’t have to, but I wanted to have an idea of where I’d been and where I was going.  Some of my old sketches are packed away in the academy, so maybe I should swing by and get them.
    .
  3. What’s your favorite meal?
    .
A thick steak with celery sticks and corn on the side.  I’m torn between a wine sauce or this sweet root sauce that a dwarf taught me to make.  Then a nice Bor’darukian brew for afterwards along with jelly-filled cookies.
    .
  4. Do you play any musical instruments–if so, what? If you don’t, what would you like to play?
    .
You’d be surprised how many mercenaries can play an instrument.  Some use it to make extra money and even write songs about their own adventures.  It’s an interesting way to increase your reputation.  I never tried it, but I do know how to play the lute.  I had a nice one too.  Then I had to break it over an orc’s head in order to escape from a bandit camp.
    .
  5. Is there any one in particular that you wish you didn’t have to be around?
    .
Stephen.  I’m sure most of us are saying that.
    .
  6. Have you ever been strongly attracted to someone and it never developed?
    .
Yes and I’m still hoping for something to happen.  These things take time and patience and apparently a high pain threshold.
    .
  7. Are you surprised about what you have become? Is this what you expected when you were a child?
    .
As a really small child, I thought I would still be in the Yagervan Plains and working in some trade.  Probably a blacksmith or a tanner.  Though I was rather scrawny, so I might have been a silver-horn herder.  After that, I only wanted to survive and then I met Selenia.  A warriors’ life for me after that, including working as a mercenary.  Hard to say if I’m surprised though.  Once I was on my own and stopped crying, I kind of decided to go with the flow.
    .
  8. What is your biggest fear?
    .
Making a mistake that gets someone killed.  As a mercenary leader, I have a lot of responsibility on my shoulders.  One bad decision can be lethal.  People wonder how I ignore the stress.  The trick is that I simply don’t show it.
    .
  9. If you could change places with another person in Windemere, who would it be and why?
    .
Has anybody had an easy time with this question?  Maybe for a day, I’d switch with Kevin back at the academy.  It would give me an idea of what it’s like to be a retired warrior.  It might make me act more cautiously when I return to my own body.  If I’m lucky, I could get some valuable insight into my older years.
    .
  10. What makes you happy?
    .
Coffee, but I’d say accomplishing a job with nothing going wrong comes first.  Not that it has happened since I became a champion.  Guess coffee is at the top of the list for now.
    .
  11. What does teamwork mean to you?
    .
Life or death on the battlefield.  You need to depend on others out there and remember that your allies are depending on you.  It can’t even be a conscious thought.  A team is strongest when it operates as one in a natural and unforced way.
    .
  12. How would you define honor?
    .
Accepting responsibility for your actions whether they are good or bad.  Never lie about your mistakes or put them on somebody else.  Do it once and you may find yourself doing it again.  So honor is definitely a fragile thing.
    .
  13. What’s the best way to hunt monsters?
    .
Very carefully.  I’d prefer to leave them alone unless they’re causing trouble for people.  No sense in picking a fight that doesn’t need to be picked.  Especially with an animal that you can’t negotiate with.
    .
  14. What’s your first response when someone makes you really, really mad?
    .
Punch to the jaw, but that’s if I’m pushed beyond my limits.  If I’m simply annoyed then I’ll throw a few insults and try to deflate the situation.
    .
  15. What’s it like working for Charles?
    .
    Never heard of him before.
