20 Questions with S.K. Nicholls

Today we sit down with fellow Florida author S.K. Nicholls. Susan will tell us a bit about herself, her work and her inspiration. I hope you enjoy today’s installment of 20 Questions.

Q1) When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I planned to go to college in 1978 to study journalism, much encouraged by teachers I had at that time. Although I had scholarships, I opted for a degree in nursing as I felt the pay would help increase my family’s standard of living, and it did, but my heart was always in writing. I wrote the best Nurse’s Notes ever written.

Q2) How long does it typically take you to write a book?

Six to eight weeks to pound out a rough draft and one to two years to edit it.

Q3) What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

I have no schedule…

Fine. Let’s Call It A Draw

(I finally know what the name of this song is and what he was saying.  Kept thinking Carnosaur for some reason.)

I’m writing this yesterday after the lawn mowing and feeling very sleepy.  Ever notice that people start calling on the phone, asking you questions, or just interacting with you the moment you run out of energy?  God forbid they show up when you’re awake and aware of your surroundings.  A little space would be nice.

This week saw the release of Tribe of the Snow Tiger and Legends of Windemere Fantasy Bundle #2.  The latter hasn’t sold anything this week, but it’s really there for anyone who wants to catch up for cheap.  The former is the one I’m more concerned about and it’s inching along.  All the marketing is set up and it was only the Men’s Adventures Top 100 lists for an hour.  Really hope it debuts on a fantasy list, but things just aren’t selling like they used to.  Probably because it’s far into a series, so I won’t have the same initial success.  Not everyone has read the first 9 and many shy away from series that are longer than a trilogy.  Downside to starting with this series, but it’s the one that sets the stage for everything else.  I do like the lengthy stuff because it gives me a lot of space to do evolutions and multiple characters.  Still, it would be nice if I could find a way to keep some momentum.

I finished writing Raven’s Game, which will be going up on the blog through October.  31 sections and 31 days.  With that project done, I’ve been editing Book 13 in preparation of tackling Book 14.  I’m still very nervous about 13 because of what’s going on.  There’s a lot of traveling, which I had happen between scenes.  The heroes are split into 2 to help with this, but there’s a lot that is going on.  One of the toughest parts is that the champions aren’t acting like themselves.  Without going into details, something in Book 12 did some major damage to them and they’re trying to move on with this wound.  Some have broken confidences and are becoming numb.  Others are lashing out to the point where they are no longer team players.  It’s a big change from the previous books, which might be why I’m nervous.  I keep thinking something is wrong, but maybe it’s supposed to be like that since they aren’t right in the head for this adventure.

Another challenge is that some of the action scenes are short.  Again, I can’t go into details, but I have a few fights that I thought would last for a page or two.  Yet, they’re only lasting for a few paragraphs.  They’re detailed and to the point, but it’s like those involved simply don’t have the time for banter or prolonging the fight.  Maybe that comes from the fact that the adventure involves battling against a deadline, so a lot of what the champions are doing requires getting it done quickly.  Just a really different atmosphere than what I did before.  Book 14 might be the same because it focuses on an adventure that goes alongside what the champions are doing, but still plays into the main storyline.  A lot of experimentation at this stage in the game.

Beyond all of that, this week was a lot of maintaining the house and cooking.  I’m slightly disappointed in myself because even with having the house to myself all day, I didn’t get any more work done than I usually do.  Not sure if it’s because I had nobody around to help with other things or because I’m just worn down.  All I know is that I have 180 pages to go on the edits, which I’d like to finish by Thursday.  Once Friday hits, I lose the desktop and I’m back to working upstairs on the bed.  Not a comfortable place, but I get paranoid if I work downstairs where other people are.

So, what’s the plan for the week?

  1. Finish editing Ritual of the Lost Lamb.
  2. Prepare posts for July.
  3. Cooking, sleeping, and biking.
  4. Watch movies with son since zoo trip was rained out again.
  5. Car stuff.
  6. Promote Tribe of the Snow Tiger as much as possible.
  7. Should really finish the chapter outlines for Chasing Bedlam.
  8. Write blurbs for Charms of the Feykin.
  9. Consider living a more interesting life, but only when wearing pajamas and already in bed.

Guest Post: Legends Of Windermere Author Charles Yallowitz on Character Sacrifice

Take a look at my guest post on sacrifice. Always an interesting topic, especially in fantasy.

Helen Jones's avatarHelen Glynn Jones

Today Charles Yallowitz is stopping by with a post on the idea of sacrifice in story-telling, and how to make it effective. As a story element, sacrifice needs to be handled carefully, and Charles makes some excellent points on how to do so while keeping the reader engaged. Take it away, Charles!

A big thank you to Helen for having me for a guest post to help promote my newest release, Legends of Windemere: Tribe of the Snow Tiger. This is the 10th installment of this fantasy series and the stakes are going to be pretty high for several characters. A core aspect of the story involves the concept of sacrifice and how far a person is willing to go for either a person or a belief. Turns out that this is a very debatable topic among authors and people in general because everyone has…

GUEST POST: CHARLES E. YALLOWITZ

Check out a fun and possibly informative post.

Last week, I was honored to spotlight Charles E. Yallowitz’s newest installment in his Legends of Windemere series, and today, he has been nice enough to return with a guest post.  So without any of my infernal babbling, we will get to the post.border
A big thank you to Wendell for having me for a guest post so soon after being part of the promotional tour for my latest book, Tribe of the Snow Tiger. An important part of this story involves rivalries, which drive many of the events. In fact, the idea of rivalries is one of the core pieces of the overall series. With a group of heroes and a separate group of villains, it’s hard not to pair them off and have grudge matches turn up from time to time. So, what are some things to consider when using a rivalry? Keep in mind that I’m…

Hey! It’s Something! (Tribe of the Snow Tiger rankings)

So nothing really happened while Tribe of the Snow Tiger was a pre-order, which didn’t surprise me.  Sales have been trickling in, so I was surprised to see this:

This can change any minute, but it’s a ranking.  I think it’s on a bunch of Top 100 New Release lists too, but I’d have to go hunting through all of them.  For any one wondering about ‘Men’s Adventure’, I have ‘Women’s Adventure’ in the keywords too.  That arena might be more competitive though.  I do hope that the book can hit at least one of the fantasy lists at some point.  Since I never know what factors into these things, I’ll be happy with what I get.

So . . . do you have your copy?

Questions 3: A Hero to the Very End

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

A fairly big part of Legends of Windemere: Tribe of the Snow Tiger is about being a hero.  You might be wondering why this is special since this comes into play in every book.  It’s different this time.  Several champions, but mostly Timoran, are put in positions where being the good hero will make the situation worse or let someone down.  For example, if Nyx lets certain events unfold then it means she is removed from helping a friend.  This isn’t about doing the right thing and making everything better.  This is about possibly doing something that feels wrong to you and risks something because the ‘right’ way could cause more trouble.  You see why it’s so hard to promote this volume?  That isn’t one of the 3 questions:

  1. Have you ever written a hero or read of one where failing to act ended up being the heroic thing to do?
  2. What do you think of a hero sticking to their honors even if it leads to their destruction?
  3. How do you feel when you read of a hero failing, but you saw a way out that their code prevented them from pursuing?

This probably makes the book seem a little confusing, but I promise it makes sense within the pages.  Read and find out.
