Took a quick look and saw below.  I haven’t gone checking the New Release Lists though.  Mostly because my phone was being a pain trying to get there.  Still, nice to see the new book below triple digits even for a bit.

Figured it didn’t hurt to throw that out there since this will be a quick post and depend a lot more on the comments.  This is about UNTITLED Bedlam too.  Yeah, I need to figure that mess up.  Feel free to suggest a present participle verb that could work for a madcap train protecting adventure.  Caboosing Bedlam?  Chugging Bedlam?  Riding Bedlam?  Misplacing Bedlam?  Dancing Bedlam?  I’m obviously goofing off at this point Bedlam?

Anyway, the train is going to be traveling from Chicago, Illinois (though first chapter or two is in Michigan to recruit our destructive pair) and go through Wisconsin, Minnesota, both Dakotas, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and Oregon.  This is mostly on a train and that’s all I can say about that.

Now, I asked one fellow author if I could reference some of his works through Lloyd since they’ll be nearby.  I’m not 100% certain how well this will work as far as references, but I had another idea.  Giving this author a cameo.  So, I was wondering if anybody else was in those areas and wanted to make an appearance.  It wouldn’t be big spots and your cameo can lead to death considering the series.  This means only volunteer if you’re willing to put your fictional life in my hands.  Maybe you’ll be a cannibal or a gang member or a waiter on the train.  Perhaps you pester Lloyd about his orange pants one too many times.  I don’t know what I’ll do, but this book won’t be out until 2018.  I mean, the second one isn’t even out yet.

This might be fun and I’m willing to hear pitches too.  Figure I should make it a public offer.  Yes, I know this could backfire horribly.

(Picked out the route before bed, so that’s taken care of.)

Valentine'S Day, Valentine, Love, Coffee

Friends, including my nerdy boss and whacky baker buddy from Callie’s Cakes, claim I’m totally addicted to coffee. Although I’m not as dependent on the drink as they claim – I love a chocolate cupcake smothered in buttercream frosting goodness as much as the next person – I definitely have a committed relationship with the brown liquid of the gods. Recently in fact, I’ve discovered coffee – unlike men – is something you can always count on in life. Here’s what I’m talking about:

Coffee is always hot. You can depend on that black liquid goodness to be exactly how you want it – nice and warm! Unlike men. Hot, cold, hot again. And they say women can’t make up their minds! Maybe we can’t make up our minds because men can’t figure out if they want to be all warm and cuddly or overprotective jerks.

Coffee isn’t complicated

‘Chain Swords’, Editing, and Head Spinning: Life of a Father/Author

First, I’m going to show a project that came up yesterday at the last minute.  My son is into Kung Fu Panda, but only the 3rd one.  The bad guy is named Kai and uses these jade swords with chains attached.  Think a kid version of Kratos from God of War.  Also, he’s a yak.  Anyway, I took time out of editing Chasing Bedlam to put these together.  I fear they’ve already lost their appeal to him:

They don’t look perfect, but he wanted white ones and I knew putting the hilts on there would lead to them breaking fairly quickly.  Close enough made him happy for the afternoon though, which I claim as a win.  Earned myself some hot chocolate later that night.  Too bad that didn’t sit well with my stomach, but it was worth it.

Amid the chaos of the week, I managed to finish editing Chasing Bedlam.  It runs like the first one with a short story/episodic feel to it.  Cassidy has much more of a personality and Lloyd is a little more grounded, but still mouthy and violent.  Have to admit that the complaints about language, violence, and ‘sex’ were taken as challenges to up them a bit this time around.  No actual sex scenes, but a lot of innuendo, blunt subject matter, and sexual jokes.  Part of the reason is because the characters are a lot more relaxed and free this time around.  There’s also a twist that involves one of those three categories, so my mind didn’t stray very far.  Not to mention Lloyd is with Katie right now, so I liked having the psycho get into situations that tested his loyalty to her.  Showed that there are limits to what he will do.  I’m sure I’ll take some heat for this.

This has lead me to thinking about the third one because I figured out what adventure I wanted to do next.  It’s starting to come together, so I might use today and tomorrow to put some notes together.  At least I’ll choose the route.  Still having trouble with the title, which is typically a present participle (I think) word and ‘Bedlam’ afterwards.  This adventure has Cassidy and Lloyd on the first revived train outside of Nebraska and they have to help protect it.  Right now, I’m thinking of having Katie be a guest and maybe a few other old friends/enemies that appear.  Bart and someone from the previous book might show up.  The route I have now is going from Michigan to Portland, Oregon with some chaos in the middle that puts them on a different track and causes all sorts of mayhem.  There’s something else about this story that I was thinking of doing, but I might wait for tomorrow to ask about it.

I should talk about Legends of Windemere: The Spirit Well here since that’s the book I’m trying to sell.  It’s moving slow, which isn’t too surprising considering how this year has gone.  When trying to get promo spots, I found that a lot of December was taken and I had to claim what I could find.  Seems a lot of new books came out and people are pushing everything.  Can’t help, but think that it’s a final reach to grab some victory out of 2016 since I saw many authors talk about low sales all year.  I do have a special sale that starts Thursday:

The 2 Windemere bundles will be 99 cents from the 22nd to the 26th, so it’s 6 books for $2!  I guess I should ask if anyone wants an HTML of the post to put up on Friday or over the weekend.  Just feel weird doing that since I just asked for help with the new one.  Kind of settling on reblogs, but I guess I put it out there.

In other news, I only have this coming week before my son and wife are on break until 2017.  Not much Internet or writing then.  I’m hoping to get the Ichabod Brooks stories slightly planned out before the house is full.  Then again, Cassidy and Lloyd aren’t letting me go as you can tell from above.  That’s why I’m giving them the weekend.  Thinking of charging up the Kindle to read something off my ‘to read’ list that is at a point where I won’t finish unless I become rich enough to make a clone that will write my books for me.  I’d probably never do that in the first place.

So, what’s the plan for the week?

  1. Ease into the days.  Ha!  Still have to get up in time to get little guy’s breakfast and lunch ready, get him dressed, and get him moving.
  2. Outline and prepare Ichabod Brooks books.  This means new friends, new enemies, and new gear for him.
  3. Chose a route for next Bedlam book.
  4. Biking.
  5. Read the rest of the Fairy Tail manga that I have.  Might pause on that to read a novel.  I feel really bad that I never get around to that.
  6. Maybe I’ll start watching Supernatural from Season 1 while I work.  Have the first 9 seasons and I’ll keep going into January with it.
  7. Prepare post for tomorrow.
  8. Crap, I forgot the laundry!
  9. Post a music video that I hope people listen to.  It’s a video game song remix, but I thought it was a lot of fun and helped inspire a little bit of ideas.  Never played the game though.

You’re extremely disgusted with an old habit. You’re ranting. You’re pacing. You’re regurgitating. You’re spent. You pick yourself up from the floor, dry your tears, and swear on your life that this is the last time. You throw away all accouterments, all paraphernalia, all reminders of the loathed and dreaded addiction. You make it through the day with firm resolve. Then you awaken the following morning with an insatiable craving. You recall your commitment and fight doggedly not to give in. You argue with yourself. You become frustrated. The stress grows into a pressing mass in your belly. Then suddenly… a comforting thought: One more day won’t hurt! You acquiesce. You give in. And the roller coaster ride begins…

A teacher once told me that the masters, the avatars, often carry an addiction in order to stay in form — to…

Thoughts on Loyalty: Only For Heroes?

Boromir from LOTR

Boromir from LOTR

This is another subject that can differ from person to person.  I have friends who take loyalty very seriously and some who believe it doesn’t exist at all.  Some consider it to be synonymous with honor while others have specific definitions for these two ideals. Loyalty has a lot of degrees too and can get tested on a daily basis by almost anything.  People have loyalty to family, friends, jobs, hobbies, dreams, religions, politics, and the list keeps going even to the point of smartphone brands.  Any one of these areas can be poked and prodded at a moment’s notice, which makes you question if you should remain loyal.  This could even be considered one of the core pieces of friendship too.

Heroic groups thrive off loyalty to each other.  The Fellowship of the Ring is a great example where the heroes depend on each other even though they aren’t all true, close friends.  Honestly, I still think of Legolas and Gimli as associates for Frodo and Sam since they didn’t really interact.  Even you can’t call them friends, they remain loyal to themselves and their cause for the entire trilogy.  All, but Boromir, who takes the role of traitor.  His loyalty is more to Gondor than the Fellowship, which leads to him trying to take the One Ring.  He regains his honor before dying, but can the same be said for loyalty?  After all, he died, so that kind of ended things for him.

Note that a person can be loyal to two things and be put in a position where they have to choose.  Once in this spot, a hero can lose something very important.  Yet, this could be inevitable too.  With loyalty comes a high risk of being forced into a corner and having to sacrifice.  We have to consider this in real life too.  There’s a ‘riddle’ in the anime/manga ‘Hunter x Hunter’ where the heroes have to say if they would save their son or their daughter in order to proceed.  The answer ends up being remaining silent for the entire time, but the real truth is that a hero must be ready for such a situation.  Loyalty will come into play here even if it’s not the deciding factor.

Throughout Legends of Windemere, the concept of loyalty turns up.  Aside from having it to each other, the champions all have other places, people, and aspects that they are devoted to.  For example, Timoran is loyal to his people while Delvin is very loyal to Selenia Hamilton.  More abstractly, Sari is loyal to the concept of love whether it involves her or not.  The third thing is a lot more subtle and doesn’t always come across since the abstract ideals can be overlooked for the more physical.  Perhaps the most loyal person in the group is Fizzle, who never had to go on this adventure in the first place and can leave at any moment.

Now, you  might be wondering about the question in the title.  On the fly, you might not associate loyalty to villains.  Like friendship, it doesn’t clearly match with the mental flaws of a bad guy.  Not unless you consider being loyal to yourself.  Still, they are dedicated to various causes of evil and selfishness, which can count if you stretch the term.  In truth, the real loyalty of villains can be found below the top tier.  Agents and minions are in their roles because they believe what their boss stands for.  There are always those that are planning to kill the chief and take over like Stephen or Trinity who is a villain almost against her will.  Then you have the Lich, Vile, Yola, and Nyder.  They stay with the Baron for various reasons, but they possess loyalty to various degrees.  Does the Baron have the same toward his people?  Hard to tell at some points since he has a slight temper and his immortality has made him distant.  I’d say it depends on the person and what his mood is at the time.

So, what about Dariana since this is connected to The Spirit Well?  How many loyalties does she have and how do they come into play?  You can say herself, the champions, the voices in her head, one side of her family, the other side of her family, Gabriel, and a few people from her past, which only scratches the surface.  Be interesting to see how the whole thing plays out.

I Made an Album!

The year – 1972. The Christmas present was an acoustic guitar. By 1973, I was already in a school band formed with my neighbor (who sadly passed away last year). I was writing songs back then and we all saved up money to go and record one in a local studio. It was called Norma Jean. The recording is long lost these days but I recall it was played on the local radio station…
