7 Tips to Writing Immortal Characters

Immortality comes up a lot in fiction.  These timeless beings turn up as villains, heroes, love interests, cursed secondary characters, and everything in-between.  Many people hate a protagonist with this power because it’s seen as a sign of perfection.  They live forever at a perfect age with no physical flaws and an intelligence that allows them to absorb all that time has to offer.  To be fair, one could think a person who has been given immortality would also have the natural ability to evolve with time.  Then again, they are still human in some way, so giving them Eidetic memory too might be going too far.  So, what are some ways to make your immortals work?

  1. Even though they live forever, you should have some way for them to die or be removed from the story.  There needs to be a threat to these characters.  Maybe a special item can undo their powers or another immortal can do the job.  Trapped for eternity can work as well.  This is what happened to the Baron in Legends of Windemere and even Dariana to some extent.  The real limit on her is that she can still be knocked out, injured, possibly killed, or overwork her body by using her powers.
  2. A physical flaw can help in the removal of the ‘perfection’ tag.  A scar or missing body part can be explained as happening prior to immortality or the price.  It doesn’t even have to visible, but be part of a big reveal later.  Maybe the character is ashamed and has found a way to hide it someway.  I will admit that I didn’t really do this with Dariana since she uses her telepathy to limit the attention she gets.
  3. If the immortal is your protagonist then you need to factor in their long life.  They should have a lot of knowledge and maybe get confused at times.  After a couple hundred years, you get your social etiquette mixed up.  Is it still right to high five or is that old news?  What phrases no longer mean what they used to mean?  Even after being in multiple books, Dariana still isn’t sure about her reactions.  She uses old greetings and blessings instead of the more casual interactions of today.
  4. This might be an odd one, but you need to keep in mind that immortals could lose any concept of time.  They could always be late or never know what day it is.  Maybe they even lack the knowledge of the year because they work off a different calendar.  This has mostly comedy effects.
  5. Building off the previous idea, an immortal could have an apathy toward life events like marriages, births, funerals, and other milestones.  A mortal will only have about 100 years to have all of these happen, which gives the more impact.  Somebody who has gone through hundreds of these events will either not care or try to fake it for those around them.  Honestly, there are people my age that have become emotionally numb to life, so immortals would have a higher risk of this.
  6. Like any character, these types should have some kind of goal.  There has to be something they want even after centuries of life.  For example, Dariana wants friends and to see the world instead of being put back to sleep.  There are a few other things that are spoilers, so read The Spirit Well to find out.
  7. Finally: Insanity is always an option.  This explains Yola Biggs and Stephen Kernaghan perfectly.  Dariana . . . read The Spirit Well to find out!

Danny’s Annual Christmas Message

Chris The Story Reading Ape's avatarChris The Story Reading Ape's Blog

Danny’s Annual Christmas Message

Well, it’s that time of year where I have to set the world right with my message of peace and love. It’s a big responsibility, but it’s the least that I can do for my fellow canines and their humans.

I reckon I should first introduce myself to those of you who have been off planet for the last few years. I am Danny the Dog, dog extraordinaire. Humans wait with bated breath for my monthly epistles to appear in print. Scientists consult me for the cure of various diseases. And Andrew, my human, needs me to turn on his computer every morning. You would think by now he would have mastered the complicated process of pressing a particular button, but you’d be wrong.

Before I get to my message of peace and love, I’d like to tell you a little about my trials and tribulations…

Guest Post with John W. Howell: Sari and Sarah in ‘What’s a Jet?’

(Today we have John W. Howell and his character Sarah whose newest book Our Justice , which is the finale of the John Cannon Trilogy.  Also, don’t forget to check out Legends of Windemere: the Spirit Well to get more of Sari.)

Nearly everyone is a thief in the taverns of Rodillen, so Sari feels at home with her keen senses waiting for something suspicious. Hiding her awareness behind a friendly and flirty façade, the blue-haired gypsy spins and dances through the crowd. Claiming two goblets of mead that she is sure the real owner won’t miss, she gives the bartender a little twirl of her skirts and leaps onto the nearest table. Jumping from one piece of furniture to another, only the slightly taller blond in strange clothes watches Sari’s approach. Landing in her seat, she hands one of the drinks to her new friend and juggles a dagger as a warning to ambitious locals.

“So, Stephanie, you’re from this place called Earth and you . . . what is it you do again? Some type of water-based soldier, I think you said.”

Stephanie throws her head back and enjoys a mirthful laugh. She leans in closer to the blue-haired gypsy. “I am with the US Navy, and I know you are going to find this very strange, but I fly jets. Um, how do I explain jets? Oh I know, those griffins that I saw in the distance. I sit inside a very fast machine which flies like a griffin. ” The blond takes a sip of the mead. “Oh, this tastes like honey. I love it. Tell me Sari do you have any idea how I got here?”

“Not really. This sounds like complicated magic and Nyxie would know more about that than me. My magic is all illusions and emotional manipulation, which is passed down from parent to child in the clan. Anything beyond those areas and I’m lost. So, a jet is a flying device that carries people. Sounds like something the gnomes are working on, which I will happily avoid for the rest of my life. You don’t have mead in your world?”

“We do have mead but it is not very common and comes in a bottle. This is the first time I’ve tried it. I must say it does give a little kick.” Stephanie brushes back a falling strand of hair. “Yes, jets carry people, but the one I fly only has me and another person. We use them as weapons. I can’t remember if I was flying when suddenly finding myself here. You mentioned emotional manipulations. Who do you manipulate emotionally? Oh, I see your drink is finished. Let me buy you another.”

Sari steals a mug off a passing tray, leaving an illusionary drink in its place. “One rule of Rodillen is that you don’t pay if you don’t have to. I don’t really use the emotion magic these days. It used to be handy when I was more thief than hero. A charm spell here, a fear spell there, and a smattering of confusion magic when you need to escape. Love spells were a favorite when I was younger, but I’ve matured enough to realize how dangerous those are. By the way, don’t accept any drinks or food you don’t see prepared here. Wonder where this jet and other person disappeared too. Unless it was only you that came here. Maybe you have something in that big backpack that the locals are eying with absolutely NO SENSE OF SUBTLETY!” The gathered thieves shift and try to do better at hiding their intentions. “I swear, the quality of criminal here has gone really downhill.”

“OMG, I forgot about my parachute. There is nothing in here that anyone would want unless they need a lot of material. Funny you should mention the other person. I’m now getting a flash of memory. No, I was flying alone which I do to keep my qualifications up. The jet is another story. I think I had better start worrying since I’m responsible for it. Tell you what, I need to find that jet. Sari, this is starting to concern me. We have no idea how I got here and now I’m thinking I have no idea of how to get home.” Stephanie furrows her brow and turns to Sari with the look of a caged cat while placing the heel of her hand on the butt of her holstered service pistol. “You have got to help me find that jet.”

Sari nods her head and stands on the back of her chair before whistling for attention. “My friend here needs some help. She arrived in a strange machine that one would expect to be made by the gnomes of Nevra Coil. If anyone finds it then let us know and, upon confirmation, you’ll get a bag full of diamond spheres. Lying will be rewarded with punishment to be determined by my level of drunkenness. Now, Stephanie can describe her . . . it’s called a jet, right?”

“Uh. Oh sure.” Stephanie stands so she can be seen in the back. She clears her throat. “I really appreciate you all helping me find my jet. So here is what it looks like. It is grey colored metal and is as big as a griffin. It has wings in the middle and on its tail. There is a canopy… uh… a thing on top that looks like a bubble. It is sitting on …er …round feet. It is very heavy and can’t be lifted by a hundred men. Have any of you seen such a machine?”

With a smirk, the gypsy spins back into her seat and puts her feet on the table. “No, but I think they get the idea. It’s like a metal bird with wheels instead of feet! A bonus kiss for anyone who finds it within the hour. So, what are the men like in your world?”

Stephanie turns back to Sari and sits. “The men? That is a tough question. I think the best way to describe them is there are many personality types but all share a common desire to be appreciated. They try to appear tough and like they don’t care about emotions yet underneath are driven by the very thing they try to portray that they don’t care about. I think your emotion spells might cause a lot of trouble with them. It would be chaos to have all the men of Earth showing their emotions. How about here?”

“Uh . . . I don’t really know how to follow that. The guys are kind of like that, I guess. At least in terms of variety. Sounds like your world is a lot more emotionally restrained than mine. You always have your sticks in the mud and emotionally blocked people. Never heard of an entire gender doing it though. If I had to guess, I’d say somebody got burned and the mead is helping her let off some steam.”

“I suppose you are right about the mead. As I said, I never drank this stuff before and I think I’ve had enough. If you must know, my guy did a two time number and got caught. There is a real nasty guy who set John up and then took pictures. Guess who got the photos? Wait. You don’t have photos do you? Well anyway, we are trying to work things out. Anything like that happen to you?”

Clearing her throat, Sari stands and takes her new friend by the arm. “On second thought, you can’t trust a thief to find your jet. They might not bring it back or they’ll take something important. To answer your question . . . we have pictures and portraits. Not sure what a photo is, but it sounds similar. Hey, look at the pretty moon.”

Immortality: Beautiful Life or Eternal Nightmare?

The Wolverine Poster

The Wolverine Poster

We tend to think that living forever would be awesome.  Especially if you can heal any wound and resist every disease.  This is kind of true, but there are a lot of pros and cons that one has to consider before agreeing to live forever.  I will state that I’m not talking about vampires, which I’m considering a different flavor of immortality.  So, the con of blood tasting bad and never eating a pizza again won’t be on the list.  The pro to counter that would be never needing a dentist again.

Pros

  1. You don’t have to worry about medical bills since you can heal any injury and disease.  Unless you’re one of those types of immortals who lacks these benefits.  Still, you can always be cured when sick and take up sewing to reattach parts.
  2. Witness the progression of history instead of reading about it.  You can get front row seats to all big events and maybe even get involved.
  3. Plenty of time to master hundreds or thousands of skills.  Learn every instrument, any sport that has your interest, and gather a collection of degrees.  After a while, there is nothing that you won’t understand because you have the time to study.
  4. You can become rich if you use the banks and your time right.  Patience will be key here, but you’re saving money by not needing anything that mortals require like medical aide.
  5. That insanely long reading list is not a problem any more.
  6. Connected to #3, you can be whatever you want to be.  Might take a little time and work, but that dream job is well within your reach.  Physical restrictions could be an issue for some things, but you have the time to work out.  Nothing to do about height though.

Cons

  1. The most obvious is that you see everyone you love, care admit, admire, and know die before your eyes.  Sometimes it isn’t even before your eyes because you have to disappear before they get suspicious.
  2. Living in the constant fear of being discovered and spending eternity in a lab.  You hold the secret to immortality somewhere in your body.  The medical community alone will be after you.  Not to mention anyone who wants an immortal army because we know that never goes wrong.
  3. You have to master identity creation and theft.  You can only be each you for about 30-40 years.  Maybe more if you find ways to make yourself look older as time progresses, but there will be a point where you have to make a swap.  Faking your death will become second nature to you.
  4. You’ve seen it all, done it all, and now you’re bored.
  5. As time goes on and you gather more emotional loss, you may find yourself becoming apathetic and distant.  What is the point of being with humanity if they only cause you pain?  The temptation to spend eternity in isolation will become rather strong unless you find another option.
  6. After all the centuries of watching, you learn to hate humans and decide that they have to go.  Only the noble and good will survive under your guidance while the rest shall perish by your hand.  So much for an eternity of happiness.
