Poetry Day: Bedroom Shadows (Revisit)

Raven from Teen Titans

(Anybody else grow up seeing things in the shadows when they were trying to fall asleep?  Does it still happen?  I didn’t really grow out of it, but my bad eyesight makes such things rather ridiculous.)

Chittering noises

From the closet depths

And under beds

Disguised as wind

Or settling wood

*

The monsters wait

Kept at bay

By blankets

And a tiny light

Jutting from the wall

*

Spindly legs

Tap the shadow fringe

Searching for a flaw

While hidden eyes

Lock onto sleeping prey

*

Tempting whispers

Made from desperation

A feeble attempt

To coax the child

From her linen shield

*

The child stays safe

While the monsters fail

Going hungry once again

Forced to slumber

By the blazing sun

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

Yes! Your poem describes that feeling well. I could not go to sleep if the closet was even partially open. Otherwise monsters would slip out. And don’t even get me started about what was under the bed! That’s why Monster’s Inc was so real to me!
