(This poem was going to connect to a story that I never got off the ground.  It was going to be all of the tricksters from mythology messing with each other and humanity.  They would eventually toppled human civilization and force humanity to hide in the wilderness.  I couldn’t get further than that.  Once I moved everything into Windemere, the idea sort of fell apart.  It ended up being a mild inspiration for Darwin’s last two books.)

They plague us
With their fatal tricks
Destroying lives
And ruining families
Some have buried cities
All for their obsession
To laugh until the end

There are many tricksters
Wandering our world
Each one is unique
In form and style
Yet all are killers
To their very core
Finding fun in death

Many of us hide
Among the hills and plains
Leaving civilization far
Hoping to avoid
The tricksters’ foul attention
Our cities distant sites
Where cackles echo off abandoned homes

We will wait
For our special day to come
It will not come too soon
A hero will rise up
Brave and wise
Beyond the tricksters’ guile
And so will begin our war
