Carl Sagan Quote (Supposedly. Internet isn’t always honest.)

I’m still on the road here, which means I needed to think of a post that would be fun and not require me to be around until later.  Then I thought of leaving something that stirred the imagination.

Below, you will find 3 questions.  I’ll be doing this on Wednesday and Friday too because I thought of 3 topics.  You can answer in the comments or on your own blog depending on how much you want to say.  If you choose the latter then please link back to here, so I can find my way to it when I settle in for a lengthy email, comment, tweet, and whatever run.

This topic is: WORLD BUILDING

  1. If you could create a fictional ‘world’, what would it be like?  Would it be similar to Earth or entirely different?  (This doesn’t only mean fantasy worlds.  For example, you can be a crime book author and describe your version of Miami.)
  2. How would your ‘world’ differ from the real world?  If many differences then what would be the two biggest ones?
  3. What kind of stories would occur in your ‘world’?

Just have fun with it.  Use this to show off something you have or come up with something new.

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

Actually I did create a ‘world’ of sorts by setting my mysteries in a made-up town on the coast of Maine. I’ve loved populating it with cafes, restaurants, and people – sort of a version of the town a grew up in, with growing pains.

I stand by what I wrote in 2015. 😊 I’m working on three series now. One is contemporary fantasy; one is a portal fantasy; and another involves animals. So that would be fantasy too.

  3. I tend to create a new world for every story. In my most recent, the setting is based on a lakeside environment that’s fairly familiar. I enjoy boating around my family’s favorite lake, so it was fun to bring that element into my world building.

The people who live there have magic! So that’s one difference. Another difference is that they’re all ruled by a “lord of the manor” rather than a representative government. This is something I need to firm up in future drafts.

The story itself involves a big family who have been intentionally separated by the “lord of the manor” and are trying to find each other.

    • Sounds like a fun story. Making a new world for every story feels daunting to me now. I used to do that in high school, but then I merged everything. Part of the reason was I felt like I was repeating some of the world building ideas and too many felt similar.

I’ve built fantasy worlds, and real historical worlds.

In my Elemental Worlds duo, I actually created a worlds. There is one that is similar to our world, except with magic. The others are related to the ancient elements.

Terra is green and forested with people living in a pre-industrial world with no magic.

Aeris has the population divided into a ruling class with a gliding membrane joining the arms and feet. They live in flying cities, kept up by magic. The other people have no membranes and are virtual slaves.

Ignis is full of vocanoes, and has dragons. There is magic, but it’s failing.

Aqua is a water world with magic, merfolk, water dragons and a few islands.

I think I’ve answered your 3 questions in one answer.
