Poetry Day: Taught Not To Lie In a World of Liars

(This one seems pretty self-explanatory.  Also, it’s still a frustration for me.  I can’t figure out where I got the pattern from too.  So, I can’t name the style.)

The way the world should work.
Always tell the truth.
For that is what is right.
A mantra for our youth.

Always tell the truth.
No matter what you lose.
A mantra for our youth.
We knew it would never last.

No matter what you lose.
You should strive for honesty.
We knew it would never last.
Once we heard you lying.

You should strive for honesty.
As if you are the purest ones.
Once we heard you lying
Your request died in your lungs.

As if you are the purest ones
Who lies about their age
Your request died in your lungs
Mere ashes upon our ears

Who lies about their age
While preaching for the truth
Mere ashes upon our ears
Making scars that will remind us

While preaching for the truth
Our own lies will come to pass
Making scars that will remind us
That everyone’s a liar

Our own lies will come to pass.
For that is what is right.
That everyone’s a liar.
The way the world should work.

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

It seems like it was a very difficult poem to write. I see how each subsequent verse starts with the second line of the previous verse. The last line is the first line of the poem. So well done!

Good poem, I loved the organization. The title should be Ode to a Politician.
