A Week of Vacation and Work

This entire week has made my head spin:

  • Saturday through Wednesday were days off with my son.  Rosh Hashana time.
  • Thursday and Friday were work/school days.
  • Today is 9/11, which always throws me off.  I have a temptation to watch the videos they show on TV, but even after 20 years . . . I can’t make it for very long.

Awkward segueing into something else after that.  This might be a shorter post than normal because I’m drained from everything.  Sleep patterns are a mess and the stress wore me down to a nub by Friday evening.  So much was going on that day, which resulted in me not getting food and drink until 6 PM.  At least I had a good breakfast since I expected the chaos.  Doesn’t sound very interesting.

War of Nytefall: Anarchy has been out for about a week.  I’ve sold a total of . . . 3 copies.  Bunch of scattered reviews disappeared on my other books too.  The strangest thing about the 3 sales is that I got at least 10 people telling me they picked up a copy or were going to.  So, either that didn’t happen or I’m not being shown the real numbers.  The books are 99 cents a piece, which also makes me scratch my head.  $2.99 was too expensive for people since I was an indie.  99 cents is apparently a sign that I have no faith in my creations.  I do, but I don’t have faith in people wanting to take a chance on my without it involving minimal financial risk.  Eh, what are you going to do since you can only control so much?

Speaking of promotions (at least in my head), I decided to give an Instagram one a shot for cheap and see if anything happened.  Doesn’t look like it did since I needed 3 flashy images and I only had cover, author phot, and series collage.  I don’t have the ability to make those types of things and it felt like I was being pushed to give stuff over quickly.  That wasn’t really the issue though.  Once I did this, my posts and DM’s were bombarded by promoters asking me to work with them.  Sorry, but if you’re asking me to promote with you by commenting on a series of father/son Lego pics then I’m not responding.  Look at what you’re commenting on before you do so.  It was frustrating and made me want to avoid Instagram entirely for a while.

Making progress on War of Nytefall: Eulogy hand editing.  Got 12 chapters to go and will probably work on it a bit this weekend.  Might be good to not be staring at a screen, so I won’t even put the TV on as background noise.  Maybe do a chapter or two then watch an episode of ‘Lucifer’ Season 6.  Going to miss that show, but it does feel like they can’t go any further after watching the first 2 episodes.  Beyond that, I’m just working my way through ‘Burn Notice’ Season 5.  Can’t bring myself to tackle anything new yet for obvious reasons.

Okay, not that obvious over the computer.  I’m exhausted!  I don’t know why, but my energy started waning really quickly on Friday.  Had to keep mustering up enough to function.  Part of it might have been spending nearly an hour in a warm room added with no food or drink.  I had so much to do after work that I couldn’t afford to do anything that would require a bathroom break.  It was one of those days, which was the opposite of Thursday.  My body may have gone into some kind of shock since I hydrated so well one day and then was crap the next.

Speaking of hydration, I bought a 64 ounce thermos with markings to show where I ‘should’ be if I drink throughout the day.  With my schedule making it difficult to get the bathroom during certain parts of the day, I had to fudge things.  As long as I drink it all by the end of the day, right?  Added some lemonade-flavored Mio (water flavoring), but it was stronger than expected.  I’ll have to play with the amounts next week.  Still, is it possible to mess myself up by drinking plenty of water one day and barely any the next?  I’m new to this focused on hydration thing.

Don’t really think I have anything else.  As usual, I said small post and then began rambling.  It’s a full week of work/school beyond Yom Kippur on Thursday.  That’s the day Jews don’t eat until sundown.  I have to figure out a video game to play, but it will have to include my son.  It might be a morning of gaming then we’ll watch a movie or TV while I rest.  My son is suggesting ‘Pokemon Snap’, but I sense that I’m going to lose my energy faster than usual this time around.  Still going to make it though.

Goals of the week:

  1. Fasting on Yom Kippur.
  2. Time with son.
  3. Work.
  4. Editing War of Nytefall: Eulogy
  5. Puzzle time
  6. Watch ‘Lucifer’
  7. Sleeping
  8. Hydrating
  9. Maybe biking once I get the dust off it

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

If you’re having days where you’re not eating and drinking too well, and your sleep pattern’s ended up messed up, it’s no wonder you’re so exhausted. Hope you can get some rest and do better at the hydration at least in the coming week.

Hopefully either the people haven’t all brought books yet and will soon, or you’ll soon see the sales show up on your dashboard. Either way, good luck with it. Personally I don’t think there’s ever an ideal price for books. Like you said, if you price it too low it’s like you don’t have faith in your own work, but if you price it too high people will complain you’re asking more than you should. All you can do is decide on a price, and hope people do actually buy copies (and that the sales will show up on your dashboard when they do).

Good luck surviving the coming week.

    • I’m hoping to rest up this weekend. Nothing really planned, so I can recover from the one bad day. Usually, I’m okay with getting the necessities, but yesterday was just terrible.

I figure the 99 cent price is better for me since I can’t get anything to move books. It’s frustrating that I see nothing from any promos. I saw a lot of immediate retweets of my ‘book is live’ tweet, but nothing turned into sales. I can’t even figure out what has to be done to make any headway. Can’t get reviews either, which probably creates a massive problem with ‘word of mouth’.

  2. Be careful with that dust on the bike. It might trigger some allergies. I hope you have a restful weekend.

9/11 always throws me off, too. I was glad it was on a Saturday so I could balance the bad feelings with a football game. Hope you got in the bike ride.

  4. I’ve felt the same way lately. I don’t do water correctly. I binge on it one day, then skip a couple of days. I like the sound of your thermos to keep track.
