Playing as a child
Toiling as an adult
One looks at the other
With a hint of jealousy
*
The child wants to grow
While the adult wants to play
Youth admires the freedom of old
Old wishes for the freedom of youth
*
Is there a way to have both?
To work all day
And play at night
Without crashing to the ground
*
It requires balance
Built over years
To retain the dreams of a child
And act the part of an adult

I studiously avoid adulting 😃

“It requires balance.” So true! Great poem!
Over the years, I’ve heard opinions from other adults about the things that adults should do. (Stop reading graphic novels, for one. Stop playing Pokémon for another.) Isn’t part of being an adult the fact that we can choose what to do, as opposed to parents who did the choosing for us? So I’m reading graphic novels and playing Pokémon.

Thanks. It is weird when adults start dictating what it means to be an adult. Really, the only sure things are bills, taxes, and responsibilities. I wonder if the people who say such things do so because they aren’t able to, so they think nobody should.

Exactly! Or they were told that adults just don’t do those things. (Though where in the Being an Adult Handbook it says that, I don’t know for sure.)
