The above is the closest to getting to a theater for the one weekend re-release. No babysitter can be found and I don’t think bringing the 5-year-old to this movie would be a good idea. For him and the other members of the audience. Come to think of it, I don’t even know if I have this movie on DVD.
Anyway, not much happened outside of fatherhood this week. The novels will remain unedited until Tuesday night/Wednesday. School starts Wednesday, so I’ll be tackling the massive editing run at that point. Beginning of a Hero, The Compass Key, and Curse of the Dark Wind were finished prior to the ‘break’. That leaves me with Prodigy of Rainbow Tower, Allure of the Gypsies, Family of the Tri-Rune, Sleeper of the Wildwood Fugue, and Merchant of Nevra Coil before I can tackle the 9th book. All of this is cleaning up like removing my earlier habit of repetition and seeing if I can remove some dialogue tags (still trying to master this part). Nothing that will change the plot and characters . . . that headache involves the books I haven’t written. One character has done a major alteration to his/her story, so I have to rethink this. Read The Compass Key and you’ll get an idea of who that is.
Honestly, I just want to get back to work. I was hoping to get stuff done at night, but that never happened. I was always left exhausted and irritated by a few things. I’m hoping things get better when school starts because I still need an hour or two every night when I’m writing new stuff. Not even just the writing, but I haven’t been on the bike since early August. I really hope to get back into a routine.
Goals for the week:
- Get son into school routine.
- Return to the bike.
- Begin the massive editing run.
- Maybe work a bit on a few other ideas if nights continue to be hit and miss. 3 new ideas popped into my head over the last two weeks, so I need to jot them down.
- Make a 1-month update tonight on The Compass Key numbers. Technically, it’s first month will be September 7th. I have a shot of hitting 500 before the end of the weekend without counting the borrows. The best so far in regards to rankings of Top 100 Lists is #57 on the Sword & Sorcery list. So it doesn’t look like this book will beat Family of the Tri-Rune or get into the 20’s. Not unless I’m underestimating September getting a post-summer surge.
That’s really it for the week. A little more rant-y than I expected, but I’m in a mood after these last 2 weeks of non-writing. Hopefully things improve and my demeanor can take an upswing.

Yeah. I’m at the point where a few hours in the afternoon don’t cut it. All I’ve managed to do is keep my email and blog comments at bay. I just got around to checking my FB author page and found an interview request from the 28th. I think I’m learning that summer and school breaks will force me into a vacation.

I think that happens to everyone. I did really well at the beginning of the summer, then realized it was my only break from school and work. Now that they both start up again soon, I’m trying to cram in as much writing/editing as possible in my last few days of freedom.

Beginning of summer was lucky for me. My son had summer school and my wife had a different job. Now she’s out of the house before he wakes up, which means I have to scramble to get morning stuff. I thought I’d be able to get some work done while he gets his ‘Frozen’ fix, but I have to keep checking on him to make sure he eats or that he hasn’t caused any trouble.

The night before is going to be really interesting. He’s been staying up rather late this summer. Going by his current schedule, he’ll be waking up 10 minutes before the bus arrives.

It is funny that a break from writing does not seem like a break for us. When I do get a break from the other avenues of life I want to use it writing. Then it seems like a break 🙂

True, but this wasn’t really a ‘planned’ break. It was kind of forced since I couldn’t get any work done while my son was around. Especially since the weather was decent for the entire time. One rainy day could have helped me get a few minor things done.

I’ve spent a great part of last year and this one revising several of my books. Those ‘babies’ sure do require a lot of attention. 🙂 There are a number of things I’d like to do with them that will remain on a to-do list for a long time. Can’t wait to be more productive from my ideas list…

I think I’ll be too busy getting him ready, out of the house, and on the bus. He isn’t really happy about going to a new school. I’ll see what I can do though. We have a first day of school pic from his Pre-K years.
