Open My Floodgates

Spinning
Whirling
Round and round
My brain twirls upon itself
Pushing against the dam

So open the floodgates!
Releasing images of all
Both twisted and serene
Monsters, mayhem, and madness
All tastes of fantasy fare

Warriors dance among the dead
As dragons sleep in clouds
Flicking griffins with their tails
Only some see spaceships
Hover on horizon’s tongue

Casters light up the world
Dueling and showboating
To entertain the impotent gods
And irritate the vampires
Who snarl from crypts and taverns

Such activity and chaos
When my mind is left to wander
Armored sheep will save the day
And a warrior will lose his mind
Once my guard is down

Until the monsters come to call
The darkest ones
I keep locked behind the gate
Repeatedly eating each other
To pass their imprisoned time

The battle erupts
My mind struggles to hold on
Letting inner voices vent
With imaginary blows
That tire all involved

Soon all is quiet
Every beast at sleep
Swept back into their cages
As fallen heroes rise
Dusting off their wounds

The cycle starts anew
As my voices take their place
Most waiting in the wings
Or playing in my dreams
While champions take the front

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

  2. Fantastic! I particularly liked the line:
    ‘To entertain the impotent gods’
It inspired alsorts of wonderful imagery from various fantasy greats, is this for or from your own (Legends of Windermere)? Nicely done, Charles, VERY nicely done; sir!

    • It’s connected to Windemere and it was the best way to explain the situation of the gods. They have a law that forbids them from getting physically involved in mortal affairs unless certain situations appear. So they have to use visions and agents to get anything done. Impotent felt better than restrained.

This reminds me of how easily our characters seem to take up residence in our heads!

I like the second to last verse – to me seems like a mind finding peace…for a little while anyway.
