What is the Law of Influence?

Kratos and Ares from God of War

Kratos and Ares from God of War

The Law of Influence is mentioned several times in the blog and the books.  This is the one rule of the gods and it was created when a mortal nearly destroyed them.  Prior to this event, the gods toyed with mortals and got involved in events much like those of Greek Mythology.  When Zaria ascended and saved the gods, she helped create the Law of Influence.

The law is simple: “Gods and goddesses are not to get directly involved in mortal affairs beyond visions and casual visits with important followers”.  For example, Cessia can meet with Sari to check in on her and fish for something while accidentally finding the gypsy’s missing footlocker.  Cessia cannot appear, grab the footlocker, and tell Sari all about her destiny and exactly what she must do.  As you can see there is some flexibility in terms of minor meetings.  Also, Gabriel as the God of Destiny and a few other gods have more leeway because there role requires mortal manipulation to some extent.

What’s the punishment for breaking the laws?  The god or goddess will be put on trial and sealed if found guilty.  The severity of the actions determines the length of the punishment.  So it can range from a few years to eternity.  The latter is hanging over Yola Biggs’s head, which is why she’s on the run and hiding under the power of Baron Kernaghan.  Now sealing involves being placed in a pocket dimension where nothing happens.  Their senses are still active, so they are aware of time passing.  This is why the gods obey the law.  They enjoy living life and watching mortals, so the idea of existing without stimulation is terrifying.

There are other loopholes in the Law of Influence that have come to pass.  One is that the gods can step into events if another god has gone mad and threatens everyone.  They can only battle that deity and must return to their distance once the battle is done.  Another is that a powerful chosen that grows too strong and threatens Windemere can be removed by the follower’s god or Gabriel.  This has only happened once and it is a major plot point of the Mylrixian stories.

Well, that’s the last of the Windemere questions.  I had fun explaining this stuff and hope people got more of an insight into the world.  Now you can go back to reading The Compass Key and enjoying the adventures.

Meet Guest Author and Poet Pamela Beckford

Chris The Story Reading Ape's avatarChris The Story Reading Ape's Blog

Pamela Beckford 01Hello, Mr., uh, Ape. Thank you for allowing me to take over some space on your vast network for a few minutes.

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Pamela Beckford and I’m a poet. Wow, that is really hard for me to say. I used to just say that I write poetry. But I think that makes me a poet, right?

In addition to being a poet, I’m the mom of a very talented daughter. She has a fashion design business and creates some amazing garments. She is also the mother of my fabulous grandson. He is five and the cutest little boy you have ever seen. No, really, he is adorable. He already has a mini career in modeling.

I started writing poetry about a year ago after some blogging friends encouraged me to give it a try. It was something I had never considered before…

What Is the Purpose of the Enhancer Gems on Trinity?

Eureka from Eureka 7 (I think)

Eureka from Eureka 7 (I think)

This subject was brought up by Ionia Martin.

For those that haven’t reached book 2 yet . . . what are you waiting for?  Seriously though, Trinity has enhancer gems that amplify her magic power.  There is one in each palm and one in her forehead.  She also gets a fourth in her bellybutton because she wants to defeat Nyx and ‘needs’ the boost.  You quickly learn that Trinity having more than one enhancer gem makes her unique, so one can’t really use her as an example of their use.  She does demonstrate their cultural importance.

Enhancer gems are typically purple, but they have been known to change color to match those of the chaos elf they have bonded with.  As their name implies, they enhance the magic of a caster and are granted to an apprentice at the age of 15 if they are shown to be worthy.  Those who are proven unworthy must find another trade or join as a front line caster, which has a high mortality rate.  There is no specific place to put them, but they are most commonly found on the forehead and palms.  These items are seen as a coming-of-age symbol and those who earn them are viewed as elite.

There is another coming-of-age symbol that is more subtle and is reserved for the highly skilled warriors of the chaos elf society.  Anyone can train to be a warrior and it is considered an honor to get into the military instead of being forced to work the mines and other slave areas under Baron Kernaghan.  Yet not every warrior is equal and those with superior prowess are given a tattoo.  They are not always the same shape or color, but each one is made with a special paint that cannot be removed.  If a scar is made over the tattoo then it will cover the injury and the tattoo will reappear on the body if the flesh or limb it’s on is lost.  Like the enhancer gems, these warrior tattoos are symbols of status.  In the older days of the chaos elves, they used the gems and tattoos to decide who is high-grade breeding material.

Almost Got It

I clear the spam
As I hit the can
Hoping to get ahead
Making progress
Until I hear a voice
Tiny and through the door
Not sleeping in today
Next time will be at night
When exhaustion has set in
Guess I am a liker once again
And my wordy child on the ‘net
Are left to their own devices

Next Wednesday is when school starts again for my son.  I can only imagine the chaos of that day, but it’ll also be when I can do a little more blog interaction and FINALLY get back to my books.  Not just editing, but trying to market them too.  I do the tweets in advance and do the FB post when I eventually get my head together.  Still, I can’t seem to get The Compass Key out of the high 3,000’s.  So it won’t get as high as the others unless I hit a sudden surge, but I’ve used up all my advertising ideas.  Now I’m just rambling because I really want a day to get some extra sleep (without sacrificing what little night I have) or get into the next project.

Even worse, I have a few new ideas that I haven’t been able to jot down beyond vague half-sentences.  This includes a change to the Legends of Windemere ending that throws a subplot off.  I just can’t win this month.

Is There a City or Nation of Halflings in Windemere?

By Kayla Matt

By Kayla Matt

This question is from zombiephreak and it’s rather cut and dry.  I’ll add in a little more about halfling society too.

There are many villages for halflings, but they don’t have a central government since they’ve merged with the human/elf/gnome world.  They do have a unique culture and some cities that are predominantly halfling.  Though there is a factor of species type that comes into play.

Homebody Halflings are rather chubby and are the least adventurous of the three.  They are very much like the hobbits of Middle Earth with small villages that survive off farming and other trades.  Elfkin Halflings are slender, which is why they get that name.  It is believed that they were born from elf/halfling crossbreeding.  Nimby and General Vile are Elfkin Halflings and these types are more inclined to be warriors, thieves, and live in big cities.  The final type are the Waverunner Halflings who can control the tides and influence the weather around a ship.  While all halflings are natural sailors, this type thrives on the open seas and they have a main ‘city’ that is really a fleet that wanders the Cerascent Isles region.

Now the halfling city that is most famous is that of Fyric, which will appear in Book 6.  It is home to one of the main temples of Neberith, the Halfling Goddess of Healing.  So people travel to this city for medical aide.  They are a hub for the potion trade, which is where most of their money comes from.  This city is run like any other village in Serab, but everyone has some medical training and can be called upon in an emergency.  This makes them invaluable during an outbreak because all citizens have skills to help.  The city is run by the head priest and an administrative mayor who share the power.

One thing about halflings is that they do not have surnames unless they earn them.  For example, Nimby is only Nimby because he has done nothing within halfling culture to earn a last name.  For many this is seen as an honor and societal leaders tend to have one, which is created from combining two words that people associate with that person.  There are times where a surname is given to a halfling to mark them negatively.  You’ll see this come up a few times.

Questions on a Hot Day

First, how’s everyone doing near the end of summer?  I’m exhausted and still running around.  This is being written in a 5-minute break from the son.

Second, I’ve been wondering something about Kindle Unlimited.  Does this cause some authors to count the borrows in her overall ‘sales’ numbers?  For example, if you have 20 sales and 10 borrows, do you say that you have 20 or 30 overall?  I’m really curious because I’m not counting them while I’ve seen a few authors announce high levels of borrows and sales.  So just curious about opinions here.

CRAZY GOOD
Before there were bikers, or fighters, or even good old-fashioned jerks, there were Navy SEALs. They put the bad in badass because, well…it’s their job.

Navy SEAL Maverick Hart has everything. Women want him. Grown men idolize him. Little boys want to grow up and be like him. The job, the glory—it’s all his. Not because it’s handed to him…because he works hard for it. The second his sights lock on something, he owns it—or destroys it. Unfortunately he does both at the same time.

Windsor Forbes only takes calculated risks in her profession and in her personal life. After being left at the altar by the only person she’s ever loved, the very last thing she’s looking for is a relationship—especially the insane brand an arrogant Navy SEAL is offering. Hesitant, yet trusting to a fault, she gives in.

She knew she shouldn’t take the chance, especially a second time, but love is irrational and their love is perfect, infallible. Or so she thought…

The downfall to having everything is you have that much more to lose. A man like Maverick can’t have it all without something slipping out of grasp.

How Did the Caster Swamp Come Into Being?

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

John W. Howell asked about the Caster Swamp, which is a central setting for several Legends of Windemere books.  It is a dangerous place where unique monsters roam and thrive.  It is also the home of the Lich who rules over it with pride.  So, where did the swamp and its creatures come from?

Well, it was rather benign and simple in the early days.  A few witches and monsters called it home until the Necrocaster Council took over.  They sectioned off the swamp and built great towers and castles where they ruled for a couple hundred years.  This created more variety of monsters and earned the name of Caster Swamp.  They attempted to conquer the surrounding region, but were beaten back by the Gaian forces.  This caused them to stay in their towers and create undead and monsters to protect their home.  Still, it was not until the Lich appeared that the area became very deadly.

It is unclear how he defeated the Necrocaster Council, but it didn’t take long.  Many believe the Lich absorbed all of them, but there are those who think he transformed them into monsters that wander the swamp.  None of the servants of the former masters survived the battle.  One incident occurred where people thought the Council returned and forces went in to attack, but all they found were creatures that had been previously unheard of or thought to exist in other regions.  This was a trick by the Lich to demonstrate his power and he used the battle to finish a ritual that enchanted the Caster Swamp to grow when Visindor Forest is weakened.

To date there have been no real changes to the Caster Swamp, but it remains one of the deadliest areas of Ralian.  There are safe zones created by forest trackers, but they don’t go very far into the area.  So going beyond those outposts means you’re either going to die or come back with a few parts (and sanity) missing.

What is Bard’s Memory?

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

In our world, this would be called photographic or eidetic memory.  I couldn’t really see those terms appearing in Windemere, so I came up with Bard’s Memory.  This is because bards are known to memorize a lot of lore and information.  This is an ability that Luke Callindor was born with and it comes up from time to time.  Yet, he still tends to forget things and this gets pointed out as an issue.  I will admit that I forget about Bard’s Memory during first drafts, but I made it to be an imperfect ability.

You see, Luke does remember everything that he sees, hears, and senses.  The information is rattling around in his head somewhere.  This does not mean that he immediately recalls everything.  Luke has to think about something to draw it up from the recesses of his mind.  Depending on the details and his concentration, it could take seconds or minutes for him to remember.  So he won’t spew out information at the drop of a hat and you can trip him up with questions if you catch him off-guard.

This tends to be a minor thing in Legends of Windemere, but it does get brought up to me a few times.  Personally, I prefer that it works this way because having a character who remembers and knows everything can be annoying.  They fall into the know-it-all category, which can turn readers off.
