Hero Poems: Fallen Hero

Superboy Prime

Superboy Prime

A hero pushed too far
Disgusted by the world
Or sick of never gaining ground
Stop one serpent’s head
And the hydra grows another
So why continue playing nice?
The power to kill
Has always been on-hand
Perhaps the world must pay
Be cleansed and restarted
By one who fought so long
And has finally cracked

Summer’s Dark Waters by Simon Williams

dellanioakes's avatarDellani's Choice - Books

I was recently contacted by Simon Williams who asked if I would share this book for him. Simon is donating the proceeds to TACT, an adoption and fostering charity. Since he will not be making money from this book, I decided to share here. This fantasy book is for children ages 10 and up. Below is an excerpt from Summer’s Dark Waters.

Cover-front-sdw

The afternoon wore on, tedious in the way that only summer afternoons spent inside can be. The hands of the clock on the wall appeared (to the eyes of the hot and tired students who kept staring at it) to be moving far too slowly, as if like them it was starting to wilt a little in the summer heat.

Joe finished his work and turned it over to stop anyone nearby from copying his answers. Nathan sat nearest to him, and he usually tried to look…

Hero Poems: Veteran Hero

Superman from Kingdom Come

Superman from Kingdom Come

He fought for years
In a battle that never ended
Forcing the hero
To turn away from the path
Living in seclusion
Because the world will never learn
Letting the wolves thrive
Against the next generation of fools
Who think they can cure the world

An inevitable threat
From past or sparkling new
The retired warrior returns
Whether to lead those who are lost
Or step upon the path alone
Muscles and senses rusty
There is a strength that still remains
Giving the hero a final battle
And closure of his tale

The bond of love can conquer all, but only if it is accepted.

–

Prophecy states that three champions imbued with the best virtues of the mortal race: heart, strength and soul, will be the ones to save them all from an enemy which threatens to steal the life from their world and those who live upon it.

These three, along with their scribe, his bond mate, and an overly sarcastic oracle, must set off on a journey which will take them through forest, city, swamp and mountain. On this quest they activate the magical stones which charge the only weapon powerful enough to defeat Tildar and his cult of Dwell.

Yet the closer they draw to journey’s end, the more it seems that it is not the evil which will be their downfall, but the…

Photography wanted

Request for a specific photograph for cover art.

Pamela Beckford's avatarPoetry by Pamela

I have learned so much about publishing and need to go back and “fix” some things from my first book.

I had used a stock photo from Amazon for the book cover for my Kindle version of Dreams of Love. Unfortunately, I couldn’t seem to use the same picture when I worked with Createspace on the print version. So, I found something kind of similar (but not close enough to suit me).

I am planning to rework the cover and have both versions be alike. In order to do that, I need an amazing picture of a sunset – preferably a sunset over the beach or water. I know that there are lots of you who take some incredible pictures. Would you like to share?

If you are interested in helping me out by contributing your picture (hi res) to be used on my book cover, please send me an…

Starting out as an indie author: Interview with Kate Sparkes, author of BOUND

Ruth Nestvold's avatarRuth Nestvold - It's a Writer's Life

For this week’s installment of “Starting out as an indie author” I offer you an interview with new writer Kate Sparkes, who — to judge by her rankings in the Amazon store — “did it right.” She published her first novel, Bound, in June 2014. The novel is a YA fantasy and the first in a trilogy – and has a beautiful cover that makes me drool. 🙂

Kate Sparkes, Bound

As of today, the book already has 88 reviews with an average of 4.7. The rankings in the Amazon US Kindle store are also impressive:

Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #1,212 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

#2 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Teen & Young Adult > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Fantasy > Sword & Sorcery
#4 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Teen & Young Adult > Science Fiction & Fantasy…

Hero Poems: The Boy Scout

Superman the Movie

Superman the Movie

Moral and right
A paragon of virtue
Boring to the audience
Booed more than the villain
As if his goodness makes him bad
Yet one is needed in the fold
To be the balance
For the brutal vigilantes
And heroes on the edge
For this one will rarely falter
Staying on the path of right
And never earning
A single ounce of respect

Edit–  Somehow this week’s poetry set became all about variations of Superman.  I was going to hit up silent heroes, pacifist heroes, psycho heroes, career heroes, hunted heroes, and the hypocritical heroes (boy scouts that kill).  Maybe I’ll save that for next week since I can’t get off this topic.  Really surprised at all the variations there are of Superman, but there’s always some of his ‘core’ that remains.

Elizabeth Hein's avatarScribbling In The Storage Room

cover

MOSAICS  by E.E. Giorgi is being released today on Amazon. I love the cover E.E. Giorgi chose for this second book in the Track Presius mystery series, a hard-boiled detective thriller with a genetic twist. CHIMERAS, book 1 in the series, is a 2014 Reader’s Favorite Book Award Finalist.

Book Descriptions:

MOSAICS (Track Presius #2)

Dubbed the Byzantine Strangler because of the mysterious mosaic tiles he leaves at the crime scene, a new serial killer is stalking the streets of Los Angeles. Racing to decipher the code encrypted in the tiles before the killer strikes again, Detective Track Presius faces a new challenge: the “awakened” genes that make his vision and olfactory sense so sharp are now taking a toll on his life. When a new set of tiles appears in his own backyard, Track makes a chilling realization: those very same genes that are threatening his…
