Cover Reveal: Torn by Kate Sparkes
Aren Tiernal knows that safety is an illusion, that his cruel and powerful brother Severn will never forgive his betrayal. Still, returning to Tyrea to challenge Severn for the throne would be suicide. It’s not until Severn himself comes to collect what’s owed to him that Aren decides to risk everything in an attempt to bring down the most powerful Sorcerer Tyrea has ever known. It’s a mission that seems doomed to fail, but it’s Aren’s only chance to save himself, his country, and the woman who thawed his heart.
Rowan Greenwood has troubles of her own. Though she has potential to become a great Sorceress, years of being closed off from her magic have left her unable to control her incredible power. When a pair of ominous letters arrive from her home country, Rowan has to choose between her new life and a chance at saving a family member’s life—and just maybe changing an entire country’s beliefs about the evils of magic.
Torn apart by separate quests, Rowan and Aren will have to discover untapped strengths and confront their darkest fears in order to overthrow a ruler determined to destroy them both.

Romance in Non-Romance Fiction
Because I don’t feel like getting work done today!
Seriously though, this is such a hot button topic. People take romantic storylines seriously, especially outside of that genre. In fact, I see many complain about it appearing in other stories. There’s a strange push to keep love and romance away from everything else. It’s as if this is an infectious disease literature. I will admit that there are some stories that get a romantic story added in after the fact and it simply doesn’t work. *wink wink nudge nudge at the picture* Though that tends to be when you have something established without romance being a theme and the topic gets added.
Here’s my personal opinion on romance in other genres: Whatever. I’ll go into tips and advice for putting it into fantasy on Wednesday. For now, all I’m going to say is that I don’t see a problem if it’s done correctly. Also, a story that has a focus on character evolution opens itself to a romantic subplot. I get complaints about Luke’s love life all the time because people don’t think it deserves any attention or it gets too much. Yet a core piece of this series is him growing up and his relationships influence how he changes as a character. Remove Kira Grasdon and Sari from his life and what do you have? A totally different character who lacks the depth and connections of the current version. It isn’t like this is unrealistic either. If you’ve ever been in love, had your heart broken, or even avoided the emotion then you know how powerful a catalyst it can be. That’s a big reason why I don’t cut romance out of my fantasy adventure series. It serves an important purpose for character and story development.
I know I have book writing to do since I lost last week to a school break, but I feel like seeing how this goes. What do you think of romance showing up in non-romantic stories? Do you groan and make fake gagging noises? Do you consider it a part of the characters’ life and that they have more than just the main plot to live for?

The Books

Start of Productivity?
I’ve been struggling this week to keep up with email, twitter, blogging, and everything else that could build up. The kid had a week off from school and the weather was miserable, so we were going stir crazy by the end. Other adults were working or had important things to take care of so I felt like I was on my own for most of it. The result is that I never touched a notebook, outline, or did much thinking about my situation. All I did was try to make it to the end of the day and get enough sleep for the next. Today has proven to be an even bigger headache with a few sudden issues cropping up that will make Monday less fun than it could be.
Since I didn’t do anything of note this week, I don’t really have much to report as far as writing goes. I’m prepping a few blog posts for March and I plan on getting back into my books tomorrow. It’s been about a month since I stepped into Windemere due to a break then misery and then no time. Summer isn’t looking pretty, but I plan on working on a side project and edit during that time. Anyway, I’m still battling a few cobwebs and some wear on the confidence. I won’t go into details in public, so moving on.
The project I’m starting is Book 10 of Legends of Windemere, which is a daunting task because it’s the first of the double-digits. Always knew it would get that far, but it’s different when you’re staring at the number. I’m also working on getting ‘Sleeper of the Wildwood Fugue’ ready for an April release. The editing will start soon and I’ll contact Jason in a week, so this is more preparing posts for the Hype Week. It’s getting tougher because newer books in a series don’t sell as hotly as the previous. So part of me doesn’t even know what to do for this. It’ll be a full week of posts that will hopefully start with a cover reveal like the last one. Just not sure what to write about. Maybe ask people their opinions on long series or write about upheavals since this book shakes up the game and several characters are forever changed. I think this is some residual confidence issues because I saw some signs that things weren’t what they seemed prior to Curse of the Dark Wind.
For someone who started the week talking about being positive, I’m coming off as a downer. Pandora’s cruel random mix isn’t helping since the songs while writing this seem to be about funerals, being forgotten, death, and misery. It started with Fat-Bottomed Girls by Queen, so no idea how it went downhill so quickly.
Let’s get into the goals:
- Start writing ‘Tribe of the Snow Tiger’.
- Handle a few issues and get tax stuff out of the way.
- Get back into the biking since it’s been a little over a week.
- Finish up future blog posts and guest posts.
- Return to FB daily promos because at least they made me feel like I was trying to be productive.
- Work on the outlines when I can, but book comes first.
- Figure out some promo stuff for next book. Maybe do an ‘interview’ post for some audience interaction. Those tended to fail, but it couldn’t hurt.
As usual feel free to ask a question that will be answered on a future post. Go here to ask away.

Pearseus: Vigil Just Released
Yay, exciting stuff! Pearseus: Vigil has now been released to into the wild to fend for itself on Amazon. This marks the rebranding of Rise of the Prince as book #1 in the series, with Mad Water now being #2 and Vigil #3. As per your suggestion, Pearseus: Schism has been relaunched as Book 0, or Prequel to the series.
I have now changed the book covers and updated their description to match the new classification. I will also change later today the 3-book bundle, to include Vigil instead of Schism, and will raise its price accordingly.
Speaking of prices, Rise of the Prince will now be just $0.99. Schism, instead, will sell for $1.99. I hope this will entice people to start the series with Rise. The two next books in the series will have a normal price of $2.99. Since the bundle now includes books worth $6.97 if bought separately, I was thinking…
