Changing WorldsThe Contract
Prequel to the Fractured Series
By Melissa Barker-Simpson

Synopsis:

After the Demonic War, a battle which devastated the mortal realm, humans now stick to the world’s major cities. To even the score, and to protect those cities, hunters joined together to establish cells across the globe. Maddison Wood is part of an alpha cell within the north of England.

Though a skilled fighter and powerful witch, Maddison can be brash, and unpredictable. She has a penchant for trouble, and is usually the first to volunteer in battle. When she accepts an assignment to protect the Hympe King, Tobias Locke, Maddison’s fate becomes bound to his. As the stakes change, and she finds herself trapped inside the bowels of an enemy camp, Maddison must fight for her freedom, her independence, and for a prisoner who has not seen the light of day for almost a century.

I’ve been writing since, well…since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. I often look back on those earlier stories, and apart from laughing at the heavy-handed drama, or cringing at my inexperience, I am reminded that I have always lived in other worlds.

My first novel was published in 2008, and I love nothing more than working on a new project. The voices inside my head invariably pull me in different directions, so although I try to work on one thing at a time, those who know me would tell you it doesn’t always work!

I have a full-time job which, though does not involve writing per se, incorporates my love of language. As a British Sign Language Interpreter, I get to translate information between two languages which is (mostly) fun.

I have two beautiful daughters who bring me great joy. They also keep me grounded, because otherwise I would have my head in the clouds permanently!

Saunders’ Choice
A Natural Gifts Novella
By Gina Briganti

Synopsis:

Saunders finds himself in a plane of existence called the Dreaming, where he encounters Velvet, the most exciting creature he will ever meet. The answer seems obvious, but Saunders’ life has never been easy.

Gina Pic 2 head 300ppiBio: Gina Briganti
Gina Briganti has been writing since she could hold a pencil. It has always been a comfort that to create she needs only three things; the pencil, the paper, and her imagination.

She lives in beautiful Joshua Tree, CA, the setting for her debut paranormal romance series, Natural Gifts.

Excerpt from The Contract:

The sound from the dining room was akin to the frenzied buzz of a hive. The voices were indistinguishable as two dozen people crammed around the table, and abandoned all sense of civility. It was so familiar Maddy felt a rush of affection for her motley crew.
“Nice light show earlier,” Riley said, as she took her customary seat.
Looking into a pair of mahogany eyes, as rich and dark as his skin, she feigned innocence. “How do you know it was me?”
“You’re kidding, right?” He snorted. “You just can’t help yourself.”
“Jealous, wolf-man?” When he flashed his teeth, she laughed good-naturedly. He was the best scout she knew, and had relied on his senses many times in the field. “I was interrupted before the grand finale, but I’m sure Dimitri picked up the reins.” Dimitri was a powerful empath, and though few could sneak past her defences, she trusted him enough to allow the intrusion. He needed to absorb some of her magic to pull it off. “I can’t deny my brothers a little-”
The noise in the room snapped off like a muted television channel. No, not muted, she thought as she stared around the table – someone had hit the pause button. It meant only one thing. Orion Reece was in the building.
Shit. Can this day get any worse?
She waited for the fireworks which usually accompanied his arrival. Orion enjoyed to flaunt his presence. He was a god of unrivalled power, one who followed no rules but his own. It was something he had in common with the Fractured, the dark souls responsible for the Demonic War. Rumour had it he’d aligned himself with Draco, their leader.

Pre-orders now available for my new novel: “A Love Story for a Nation”

sassevn's avatarAuthor Mark W Sasse

It’s an understatement to say that I’m excited about the release of my fourth novel, A Love Story for a Nation.

One of my beta readers perhaps said it best. She was so impressed with how different it is from my other novels.

And it is.

In a totally good way, says the author.

I made some distinct choices with this novel which I hope will work. She seemed to think it did, and I’m grateful for that. I’ll be writing about some of those choices on some later posts, but for now, I’m happy to announce:

  • It’s now available for pre-order on Amazon!
  • It will be releasing in Kindle and Paperback on July 3

Please head on over to its Amazon page and read the synopsis, and if it looks good, order yourself some good summer reading.

Thanks all!

To TWUBS or Not to TWUBS! An Annoying Question

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

Okay.  I may have mentioned that I planned on doing a TWUBS chat on Saturday from 8-11 PM EST.  Nobody seemed to notice, which is probably a good thing.  I have to get my parents from the airport and this is the second week in a row where I’m one yawn away from a coma.  Yet the show (in my head) must go on . . . I think.  All I know is that I lose all day access to the desktop after this week and I’ve gotten used to having such a big, pretty screen.  Also it’s faster than my laptop and I’m getting so off topic that it’s ridiculous.

I’m trying to find a day and time that would work for a TWUBS chat after this weekend.  I’m open to suggestions.  Second weekend in June is the only one I can’t do because I’ll be away.  Might still be handling blog comments and retweets, but no guarantee.  So an on-line chat will be out of the question.

Q. What’s the plot of your latest fantasy novel?

cover_bundle_700That would be Pearseus: Vigil, the third book of my epic fantasy series, Pearseus (fourth if you count Schism; the prequel to the series). It continues the story from where Mad Water left…

When a New Hero Joins the Establishment

First Appearance of Gambit in Uncanny X-Men

First Appearance of Gambit in Uncanny X-Men

I posted about debuting characters and introducing new ones to the group.  Various tips and information and jokes.  So I might repeat myself a bit here.  For that I apologize, but I do think I might have missed something.  Now, what can you do when you have a new hero on deck?

  1. It really does help to analyze what you have so far.  Will this new character battle a pre-existing one for the same role?  Will their personality be too similar to another or incompatible with all of them?  You can still go ahead if the answer is yes and work that into the story.  It’s just good to see the conflict in advance.
  2. A new hero doesn’t have to get along with everyone at the beginning.  It can be done, but many people like a little friction when a newcomer appears.  That feels more natural and I don’t mean flat out hate.  A little distrust or forgetting that the person is around.  Everyone has to get to know the new guy, which can take a few chapters or even several books.
  3. With a new hero, you might need a new villain or a connection to an old one.  You want the fresh face to have a stake in the main story.  It can be caused during the initial adventure or prior to the debut, but a hero needs that reason to go the distance in a story.  Otherwise, you just revealed a supporting character.  Not a bad idea, but might not be what you wanted.
  4. If this is a big impact character then it doesn’t hurt to do a little foreshadowing.
  5. Replacing an existing hero is always a possibility. Going back to #2, there will be friction if it’s a blatant replacement.  The others will be hurting and may not welcome the new guy with open arms.  Your audience might be annoyed too if it’s a popular hero.  Personally, I’d avoid doing a carbon copy or anything that could make the reader constantly compare the two heroes.

Short Stories Resources and Submissions

Very useful information for short story writers.

Nicholas C. Rossis's avatarNicholas C. Rossis

As you may remember, I am putting the finishing touches to Infinite Waters; my upcoming second collection of short stories (the first one being The Power of Six, of course). Most of them have a touch of science fiction; all of them have a lovely twist.

However, I have also kept a couple of stories out of it, as I have submitted them or am about to submit them to magazines specializing in short stories. I thought I’d let you know which ones those are, in case you, too, are interested in submitting to those.

Non Local Magazine

You may remember my ongoing collaboration with Dan Dombrowsky of the  33rd Street Press. Dan has kindly already included one of my short stories, Shoot the Devil, in his excellent Non Local Magazine. As he’s now preparing the next issues, he’s always on the lookout for sci-fi shorts.
