7 Signs a Person is Suffering from Author Fatigue

Does this really need an intro?  Sure most, if not all, of us have been here at some point.  This is possibly a new thing I’ll do from time to time, which was inspired by John W. Howell’s Ten 10 Lists on Mondays.

  1. You start dreaming about editing and it steadily becomes a nightmare.  Their, there, and they’re attack out of the shadows.  You’re strapped to a chair and forced to watch all of your greatest typos play out in front of a giant crowd.  Also, you’re naked and the dog ate your manuscript.  Not sure where the dog came from, but it looks remarkably like your old English teacher who swore you wouldn’t be able to write your name much less a novel.
  2. You sit down to write at the laptop and blast away an epic chapter that is the best you’ve ever done.  Your fingers flew across the keyboard for hours before you celebrate with a drink.  Then you do a spit take when you realize that you forgot to turn the laptop on.
  3. You beg the clerk at the supermarket to beta read your shopping list, which you swear is Pulitzer worthy.  Upon getting removed from the premises, you politely request that the police read and review your shopping list on Amazon.  Don’t worry.  You’re sure they won’t be tagged as friends or family.
  4. Somebody tore a piece of paper out of your notebook to write down a phone number and message.  You lack the urge to attack and write their obituary in their own blood or at least curse at them.  The revelation that you let it happen results in two hours of the fetal position and praying that the ghost of your favorite author doesn’t punish you for being weak.  If your favorite author is still alive then add another hour of praying that they don’t find out you unintentionally wished death upon them.
  5. You catch yourself watching Reality TV.  Worse is that it has given you a story idea that can only be removed with a lobotomy.
  6. The taste of coffee no longer appeals to you.  You weren’t a coffee drinker in the first place, but that doesn’t seem to factor into your panic.  Fearing that the end is near, you rush to the nearest clinic and demand a taste bud revitalization procedure.  This is denied, but you were sent away with an assortment of anti-psychotics that all come from a popular company called Placebo Inc.
  7. You simply don’t have the energy to talk to or control your characters.  They seem to know what to do, so you’re going to nap while they finish the first draft.  With any luck, the family won’t call an exorcist this time and leave you explaining your author process to Father Bartholomew.  He prefers non-fiction and you write fantasy, so the talks never end well.

Color me Green – St Patrick’s Day, March 17th

There’s a ‘go green’ joke in here somewhere.

St_Patrick

So the world renowned St Patrick’s day ‘holiday’ is fast approaching, but what do we really know about St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. St Patrick’s day is celebrated on March the 17th and is not confined purely to Ireland. It has grown into a highly recognisable celebration that takes place, in different forms, worldwide. In fact the celebrations take place even farther afield than this, having occurred on the international space station and well, that is out of this world.

If we look at Wikipedia we find that he hails from Roman Britain in the 5th Century and was a Christian missionary and bishop. Apparently kidnapped by Irish raiders and gainfully employed as a slave in Gaelic Ireland, shepherding, he found God. Legend has it that he used the three leaved shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity of the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost to…

Fan Art from Kayla Matt: Champion & Mercenaries

I’m going to be giving ‘Teaser Tuesday’ a rest this month since I’m running out of spoiler free stuff.  I also got a new collection of fan art from Kayla Matt.  She did 18 new Windemere characters who I’m dividing into 4-5 groups.  I’ll be putting in links for either their debut book or one that they reappear in if someone else has that one earlier in the post. No method to my madness.  So enjoy!

Insights into Indie publishing Out on a Limb or Positioned for Success?

No one wants to believe they are at a disadvantage, but reality is reality. Yes, getting your books into print or available on an e-reader is easier now than it has ever been. But, is publishing the goal or is there more to being a success? Is it possible to go out on a limb and define your own success?

The Hat Juggler

Understand from the start that as an indie author/publisher it all rests on your shoulders ultimately. There are three hats that you are required to wear: author, producer, and promoter. Notice there are 3 and not 2 roles filled. It’s easy to see the writer and the promoter (marketer) role, but the producer role is both the lynchpin and the bridge in the process. Being a book producer encompasses everything from editing to layout/formatting to…

Please welcome Sally Cronin, author of a short stories, a copious and impressive blog, novels, and a number of books on health, wellness, weight loss, and media training. Her most recent book is called Tales from the Garden. I’m particularly thrilled to have Sally on Reade and Write because she is a tireless and selfless promoter of other authors.

Hi, Sally!

Thank you so much Amy for inviting me along today to talk about my books and blog.

Tell me about your new book.

My latest book is a collection of fairy stories called Tales from the Garden and the stories cover the usual fairy story themes of love won and lost, evil witches and handsome princes.

Tales From the Garden small- Cover

Who is the audience for the book?

Judging by the comments it would seem that fairy stories appeal to all ages and I was surprised by the reaction from men and women…

Cassidy’s Jeep: The Third Protagonist?

Art by Jon Hunsinger

Art by Jon Hunsinger

When I was preparing to write Crossing Bedlam, I put a lot of thought into what type of vehicle they needed for the cross-country trip.  I needed something strong, durable, off-road ability, and not too slow.  Some people suggested a Humvee because those things are one step below a tank, but reading up on them nixed that idea.  They aren’t very fast and don’t have a lot of space.  Think they’re no longer made for civilians too, which means it’d be hard to find one so far after the collapse.  Eventually, my hunting led me to the jeep that is now Cassidy’s most prized possessions.

It’s also becoming it’s own character in a way like the Impala of Supernatural, the Charger of Burn Notice, and all the other famous vehicles.  Not that it’s at that level, but the Jeep has such an important part to play in the story.  This isn’t just the transport that takes Cassidy and Lloyd from New York to San Francisco.  It acts as their home because it has all their stuff and they live in it.  More importantly, our heroes bond within the car, so it achieves a special significance for them.  So whenever it gets damaged, I feel the same way I do when I had to write about one of the heroes getting hurt.  At least my hope is that the readers want to see the Jeep get to the end of the road along with its passengers.

Something else that I realized after I wrote the book, Cassidy is extremely attached to this car.  At first, I thought I unintentionally made it a Mad Max connection that doesn’t have much beyond ‘this is mine’.  Then I realized how she got the Jeep and her connection to it goes deeper.  Without putting in spoilers, she sacrificed something important for this vehicle, which means it has replaced that which she lost.  Yes, this has to do with her mother.  So the Jeep is actually another reminder of her loved ones, which makes it very dear to her.  God help anyone who tries to steal or damage this thing because Cassidy will come down on them like the Angel of Death.  If you were wondering, Lloyd is fine with the Jeep, but his connection to it is entirely platonic.

So, have you ever used vehicles in your stories and found that they take on a bigger role than transportation?  Do you have a favorite fictional vehicle?  I’m betting on there being a few General Lee’s and Kitt’s in the comments.

Am I Allowed to Step Out of Windemere? #fantasy #writing

Wasn't Han Solo handcuffed when he went in?

Wasn’t Han Solo handcuffed when he went in?

So, I’ve had something on my mind for a while.  Since December actually and recent events finally made me want to make a post.  The question in the title is rather valid.  Why?  Because Legends of Windemere books are still selling or at least getting looked at on Kindle Unlimited.  I’m always impressed when I see them and it helps drive me forward with the newer books.  So, what about Crossing Bedlam?

John Cleese/Monty Python

John Cleese/Monty Python

It has basically died even though I hyped it up beforehand and did my usual marketing stuff.  Not even a peep and I have no idea why it happened.  People have made suggestions and I’ve found that nearly every one has been countered by praise from another party.  This issue really came home when someone sent me a message asking if I was planning a sequel.  I do hope to write one later this year, but I don’t know about publishing.  The adventures of Lloyd and Cassidy are a lot of fun to write, but I can’t tell if I’m alone in that camp.  Yes, there’s going for the art and that’s another topic.

So, where am I going with my tale of frustrating woe?  Well, at some point I’m going to finish writing and publishing Legends of Windemere.  Probably December of next year if things run smoothly.  Then I’m left in the lurch.  Not that I don’t have ideas since there are the Dawn Fangs, Sin, a one-shot of a survivor, Elysium, Darwin, and I could keep going on.  The problem is that I’m starting to wonder if I’m even allowed to step outside of the adventures of Luke Callindor.  Is the brand Charles E. Yallowitz or Legends of Windemere or both?  If it’s the second choice then everything I write next may suffer the same fate as Crossing Bedlam.  Will anybody want to know about the vampire civil war and meet Clyde since Nyx won’t be involved?  Will people cheer for Sin when he isn’t teamed up with Fizzle?  These may sound like odd questions, but they are a source of worry.  Maybe I’ll be safe if I remain in fantasy, but one never knows.

Another source of this comes from what I saw in December.  I was gearing up for another book release called The Mercenary Prince and checked out the Amazon fantasy lists.  Nearly 50% of them were new editions in various languages of this:

Harry Potter Books . . . Duh.

Harry Potter Books . . . Duh.

Yup.  I found myself staring down the barrel of this epic series.  Nothing against it, but it got me thinking about J.K. Rowling.  She’s considered one of the greatest authors of modern times.  Yet, she can’t seem to get away from this series.  Yes, she had ‘Casual Vacancy’, but I remember reading that those books were doing mediocre until it was released that she was the author.  Her brand is her name, which is something we all dream of.  Still, she doesn’t seem to be getting away from Harry Potter.  Now this could be entirely by choice because why mess with a good thing.  Can’t argue with that and it is smart.  You don’t see many new authors of fantasy stories move outside of the world or genre.  Maybe it is more common than I realized and I merely grew up on authors who forged multiple worlds with no connections.  In other words, I’m only going by my own experiences.

As I write Book 13 and mark down notes for Book 15’s grand finale, I have to wonder about the future.  What do I do when I have to kick off a new series?  Jason and I will be parting ways too, so new style of cover art will come about too.  Everything is going to change once The Forgotten Baron (how’s the title?) is published and I have to set my sights on a new project.  I can do whatever I want as I know some people will say in the comments. I will pick the series I feel should come next, which will probably be the Dawn Fangs.  None of that changes my fear that whatever I do after Legends will become a sacrificial lamb and burn.  Seeing Crossing Bedlam get hyped and supported then get crotch kicked a yard from the starting line has given me pause.  As well it should.  Not that I can take the safest path and push Legends of Windemere forever.  My stories are designed to have endings even if it takes a while to get there.  Though nothing will be as long as this series.  I think I’m at the rambling part of my mind.

So, this is where my mind is at.  Just wondering if it’s me or the series that is the brand and if I’m allowed to move to another one when I write ‘THE END’ on Luke’s adventures.  FUN!
