Poetry Day: Icarus Reborn

Icarus

(Written about the constant reaching for hope, which is followed by an inevitable crushing of disappointment.)

I see a pattern

That I follow to perfection

Reaching for the ring

High above my head

Basking me

In a golden glow

Barely sensing the burn

I blindly soar to grab

Believing the ring my fate

So sure that it is mine

Only to begin my fall

As I fail to hug the sun

I plummet to the depths

Cursing my short sight

I am Icarus reborn

Falling to my doom

Never learning my own limits

Fated to fly too high again

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

Wow. Very poignant. Particularly “As I fail to hug the sun/I plummet to the depths.”

  2. Hard to react to this one. It is tragic.

That is sadly relatable. I’ve certainly had moments where I thought I had something going only to have it taken away or my hopes crushed outside of my control.

    • It’s amazing how often we are undone by the actions of others. This is why I never believe the ‘take charge of your life and control everything’ crowd. Doesn’t seem possible.

Absolutely and I know it well. It’s even worse when others get away with it or don’t have to deal with the same obstructions. Don’t get me wrong, people do need to take initiative and not be passive in their lives, but that “take charge of your life” doesn’t always play out well even if people are working hard and doing the right things.

      • If everyone took charge of their life, the world would be in chaos. Though it probably already is because the wrong people got to do it.

Interesting, yet morbid observation. I can see why the wrong people who take charge of their life but with horrible results as they cause havoc or oppress others. It gets even scarier when you realize those same people think they’re being heroic while doing vile things.

As everyone says before me, really relatable. I feel like it is so relatable that nowadays the myth is often used to discourage trying new things and having more than one dream.
