First of all, I always post this music video leading up to Halloween:
I was thinking of adding more to this post, but I’ve done a bunch in the past and can’t think of any fresh Halloween songs. Feel free to suggest any and I’ll add them in throughout the day.
Mostly here, I wanted to say that I was thinking about my old costumes. My son asked what he had been over the years and I remembered most of them. There’s one . . .Olaf! That’s the one I forgot when he asked me 4 days ago. Okay, we’re good. At least, I have a better shot of remembering his than mine. All I can get is (in no specific order):
- Pumpkin Patch
- He-Man
- Clown (two-colored hair dye didn’t come out for a while)
- Han Solo
- Donatello the Ninja Turtle
- Starfleet Officer
- Garfield dressed as a pirate (homemade)
- Spider-Man (homemade, but I got the flu on Halloween)
- Ghostbuster (homemade proton pack)
- Johnny 5 from ‘Short Circuit’ (Homemade from a large box and not very good . . . I may have been 10)
That’s really it. I think I’m missing 6-7 costumes. Keep thinking I was a dinosaur or an animal at some point. Most of my costumes were homemade because I would pick some odd things. Surprised that I wasn’t a superhero more than twice. Maybe I was a cowboy at one point because I did have a cap gun and tin star at one time?
Anyway, what costumes can you remember from your childhood?
We always wound up with those cheap packaged costumes from the store. the ones with an awful plastic mask. Seems like I was Spider-Man for years, because we wore them until we outgrew them.

I had a few of those. Used them for play afterwards, so they never made it to a second Halloween.

Sounds like more fun.

Ooh! My son would love to be Johnny 5! Why didn’t I think of that one?
Mostly, lately, I’ve been thinking about how we used to make our costumes. Nowadays people buy the whole ensemble.

I’ve seen both. I think store bought costumes are more interesting these days and they appeal to those who are too busy to build. Yet, you see some parents cobble simple things together when they can.

This year we’ve been trying to go cheap, and homemade is ending up more pricey than Amazon!

What are the costumes? If I may ask.

Steampunk, chicken, werewolf, and Spiderman (we have a hand-me-down for that one).

Steampunk definitely gets pricey.

Yes! Fortunately (?) he has a a really expensive set of goggles and hat he picked up last year.

You did much better than I could. I remember a bum and the lone ranger but that is about it.

Feels like there’s more variety these days.

Great variety! I was a pirate, a ghost, a princess, Gandalf (yes, Gandalf), a hobo, and some others I can’t think of just now.

Hobo is surprisingly common.

My brother’s birthday is a couple of weeks before Halloween, and mine’s a couple of weeks after, so mostly my parents would plan us a joint party around Halloween, and we’d have that instead of going out trick-or-treating. Though there was one year when our birthday party turned in to a trick-or-treating adventure… Not sure how that happened, but it finished with us all dressed up in whatever we could find to make costumes out of based on what we were wearing and what was in the house, and heading out trick-or-treating. We did actually go trick-or-treating on purpose a couple of times as older kids, and I was usually a witch or vampire, but that’s about it.
I’ve done more dressing up for costume parties I’ve been to since I grew up. I’ve been a cowgirl, a horse riding jockey, a gypsy, a footballer, and a Victorian style cook.

Interesting birthday plan. Did you guys like it being a joint birthday instead of a Halloween thing?

We didn’t mind when we were little. Since we were so close in age (we’re only a year apart; he’s exactly a year and four weeks older than me) and so close as little ones a lot of people thought we were twins, it would have mostly been the same kids at both parties anyhow. But when we got a bit older we started not being so happy with the arrangement.

I can imagine. I hear similar things from friends who have birthdays very close to Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years. I get Passover at times. Not a fun one to get your birthday on since the diet restrictions include no cake or pizza.

No cake or pizza? That would suck! If I’m remembering right though, it’s because of no eggs or dairy, right? In which case, there’s always vegan cake and pizza… Something I’m extremely glad exists, though I suppose the idea doesn’t appeal to you?

Actually, Passover is about not eating things that rise. So, it would be no bread.

Oh, OK. Yeah, definitely no cake or pizza then. That sucks!

Thesemdays, I usually wear cat ears and leave it at that.
But when I was in grade school, I had an elf suit my mom made that had had bells on it. I wore that for about three years and I was so sad when it was too small.

I might borrow my son’s Mario hat. Elf suit sounds cool.

You have a great memory, Charles. What I remember from my costumes is how I had to put on my snowsuit over my costumes because it was either raining or snowing out.
This is the first time I see this video. Great one for Halloween! Happy Halloween! 🙂

Thanks. I remember a few raincoat and umbrella years. Almost had one this year. Very brave to continue when it’s snowing.
