I always enjoy putting comedy into my books. The categories tend to be sight gags, attempts at wit, and slapstick. At least those are the ones I can recognize since I’m not an expert on comedy. I like to laugh and grew up on a ton of comedies like Marx Brothers, Laurel & Hardy, Three Stooges, Abbott & Costello, Mel Brooks, Lucille Ball, Bugs Bunny, and the list goes on. Seriously, I probably should stop myself there or we’ll be here all day . . . Robin Williams and Eddie Murphy. Okay, I’ll behave myself now. (George Carlin) So, let’s try a few questions about comedy:
- What is your favorite type of comedy?
- Who is one of your favorite comedians?
- Do you have a favorite joke, gag, etc.?
My quick answers:
- I always enjoy wit and wordplay. Almost like a verbal sleight of hand.
- So many to choose from. Robin Williams has always been a big favorite.
- One of the first jokes I ever understood was: “One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas I’ll never know.”

1. What is your favorite type of comedy?
Usually something very quirky. Though I grew up watching The Three Stooges, Groucho Marx, Lucille Ball, and others who practice physical comedy, I now prefer witty dialogue and quirky characters who don’t realize they are quirky.
2. Who is one of your favorite comedians?
Brian Regan. First saw him on Comedy Central.
3. Do you have a favorite joke, gag, etc.?
Brian Regan’s “You Too” routine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2-5mDyCKac

1. I wonder if a lot of people evolved like that. Kids do enjoy slapstick since it’s primarily visual. The witty stuff comes later when you’ve got a better vocabulary.
2. Been a while since I saw any of his stuff. Should look for a few videos.
3. Good one. 🙂

I think so. My brothers and I grew up with Looney Tunes, Little Rascals, and other shows. But then we started watching movies like It Happened One Night and His Gal Friday. That’s where my love of dialogue came from.

I always liked the combos. You get a good combination of different schools and it appeals to more people. Also means it can work no matter your mood.

Sorry, I meant His GIRL Friday. 🙂

Too many to narrow down for me. I always appreciate a laugh, even in a serious book. I was thinking of posting about it in the next month or so.

What is your favorite type of comedy? I like the standup variety with lots of intelligence and little use of the term fuck.
Who is one of your favorite comedians? Seinfeld
Do you have a favorite joke, gag, etc.? Guy jumps out of a 30 story building. Make a mess on the street below. A crowd gathers and there is a priest who says aloud, “My poor son I hope you were prepared.” A man comes up to the priest and tells him he thinks the man was prepared. “How are you sure?” the Priest says. “I live on the fourth floor and as he came by my open window he said, ‘and now for the bloody thud.”‘

1. They do seem to use that word a lot. I barely react these days.
2. I never got into the show, but I’ve liked his stand up. Weird.
3. Good one

Favorite type of comedy: old silent movie humor, e.g. Harold Loyad and Buster Keaton style.
Favorite comedian: modern ID have to say it was Davitd Letterman, old time Cary Grant.
Favorite joke or gag: does the old Abbot and Costello who’s on first count?

Haven’t seen that silent stuff in a while. Only when I find shows on the history of comedy. Keep forgetting Letterman counts too. Abbot and Costello always count.

Letterman might be retired, but he’s still better than what’s on now.

I liked his lists and some of his jokes, but I never got into his show. Most of the late night stuff tends to bore me even today.

The top ten list was always the best part, followed by the monologue. I also enjoyed it when he had Jack Hanna bring in animals. Other than that I didn’t watch too much of it normally.
None of the current late night hosts are worth watching in my opinion.

I saw Jack Hanna goes on the show with James Corden now. I like Colbert, but I’m a big Comedy Central fan. It’s really the Jimmies I can’t stand.

What is your favorite type of comedy? I like banter and intelligent wit, clever comebacks.
Who is one of your favorite comedians? Loved George Carlin (Is he still alive?)
Do you have a favorite joke, gag, etc.? (Warning: It’s not exactly clean.) Man gets tattoo of his fiance’s name, Wendy on his penis. Goes with his newly wedded wife to Jamaica on their honeymoon. Makes a trip to the restroom and sees a Jamaican guy with a ‘W’ and a ‘Y’ tattooed on his penis and asks, “Is you wife named Wendy too?” Man answers, “Nah, mon, It says,’Welcome to Jamaica, mom, Have a nice day.” An oldie but goodie.
