I’ll admit that I’m kicking myself for doing a general name, but it is what it is. The fairies of Windemere have a lot of variety and I’m always discovering new ones. Each one is a different even if they look the same. Most people in Windemere use the names interchangeably, which annoys many of them. For example, Pixies are pranksters with a magical glow while Sprites are forest warriors that lack the glow. So I’m going to touch on a few of the big ones.
Sprite
Introduced in Allure of the Gypsies, Suzu is a sprite that helps our heroes get to Kalam’s Lair. These creatures defend the forest and tend to be very brave, which can get them into trouble. They use sharpened twigs as spears and acorn caps as shields and helmets. Unlike other woodland fairy species, they don’t maintain a specific tree as their home and power center. In fact, they tend to be found around mushrooms more than green plants.
Dryad
Going to the opposite end of the spectrum, these human-sized fairies bond their energy to trees to survive. This makes them operate off the seasons, so they are most active in the spring and summer. Fall is when they breed and winter is hibernation. Their method of breeding is that they find someone of the opposite gender of another species and take aura with a kiss. Like all woodland fairies, new generations are made by mixing magical energy and sex is for entertainment. Dryads have a big sense of hierarchy, so they will be nice to species that they see as superior such as naiads.
Naiads
The only ocean fae and considered one of the royal lines due to their power over water and ice. They live deep within the depths and rise to the surface only when summoned or they reach an age of curiosity. This is a dangerous time since it brings them into contact with those of the surface world. It is a delicate existence too. Some naiads fall in love with other species and renounce their fairy nature, which creates half-breeds. Others enjoy the rivers and become nymphs, but can never touch saltwater again. A naiad can only be out of the ocean for two days before they fall into a coma.
Others
I’m only putting this down because there are a lot of fairies out there. You have nymphs, brownies, spriggans, selkies, and the list keeps going. They don’t usually get involved in events unless their territory is threatened. Others may be exiled from their homes, so they find a person to befriend in order to survive. Only time will tell what turns up in the various Windemere series.

“They find a person to befriend in order to survive.” I like it, parasitic fairies that you can’t get rid of. I’m on a parasite kick in my current novel, so I see possibilities everywhere.

More or less. Some would be parasitic, but others are closer to ‘best friends’ that will help you in order to stay around. One of my future heroes has a fairy friend for a bit. A leftover from him being originally based on Link from Legend of Zelda.

I like the idea. So many possibilities. Take the bad with the good, some help + some embarrassment. Lots of good ideas.

Might even be dependent on the fairy’s personality. I like having them be various species with individuals instead of all of one type acting the same. Means I can pull one into a main character role and develop them. Reminds me that I have a series/standalone on Windemere fairies. Need to figure out where that notebook went.

That’s the sign of a big world. There’s always someone or something cool to see. 😀

Every book has to add a new place, aspect, or critter as far as I’m concerned. It does get hard to juggle though.

I was very interested in the Dryad group. I thought their manners were really terrific. Asking if it was okay to kiss before the act. I guess they would be my favorite fairy.

They’re definitely one of the more interesting types. Their moods change with the season too, but never really malicious. Still looking for a chance to show them in the spring or summer.

The world would be a less colorful place without them. Sure there’s an urban fairy around there too. 🙂
