Why Do You Do It? (Character Question)

Fizzle– No understand question.  Why do what?

Luke Callindor–  I think they want to know why we’re heroes instead of villains or settling into a simple life.  I’m trying to be a hero because it runs in the family, I want to help as many people as I can, and it’s what I’ve always wanted to be.

Nyx–  Some of us didn’t have a choice.  Raised to fight the darkness over here.

Sari–  Then shouldn’t you be the leader?

Nyx–  Do we really have a leader?  It’s whoever knows what they’re doing at the time.

Fizzle–  Delvin leader?

Delvin Cunningham–  I’m just the tactician and I’m a hero because . . . I don’t think I really have a reason.  It just kind of happened and I chose to help others instead of shying away from my path.  It has been hinted that other champions have turned away from their destiny, so this isn’t something written in stone.

Luke–  Actually, I think Gabriel really did write the destiny in stone.  *ducks spell*  I was only making a joke, Nyx.

Sari–  That was me.  Tried to turn your hair bright orange.  Anyway, I’m not a hero.  I just help my friends because they helped me.  At least I don’t feel very heroic even when I’m fighting.

Timoran Wrath–  That might be what makes you a hero.  Unlike Luke, you have no interest in the title of hero, so you do not concern yourself with the details.  You simply do what you feel is right like I do.

Delvin–  I’m there too.  This sounds like we’re being mean to Luke and Nyx who have different reasons.

Nyx–  I’m noticing.

Trinity–  I’m a hero to my people because I suffer alongside them and keep myself between them and the Baron.  So even villains can have noble reasons and be considered a hero by some people.

Luke–  I think that’s a topic for next week.  Anyway, I do want to help others like the rest of you.  Guess I have a bunch of reasons.  This question is actually a lot harder when you think about it.

Sari–  It’s different for everyone too.

Fizzle–  Hero one who help others.

Timoran–  That is the simple definition and it works.  Honestly, a true hero cannot easily define their reasons.  Not in our world anyway.  Maybe it is truly up to those we help if we are worthy of the title or not.

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

Awww. This is awesome. Love this last line of Timoran: “Maybe it is truly up to those we help if we are worthy of the title or not.” Love also the fact that a villain can be a hero to someone else. 🙂

  2. Love this, Charles! It would be a great help to me to get the major players all sitting down together and discussing their deepest motivations, kind of like actors sitting together and discussing what drives their characters in a play or a movie. Maybe some of it could actually be incorporated into the book itself or maybe it would simply help to flesh out the characters in the author’s mind, leading to more depth.

    • I think it’s rather easy to get those scenes to work. At least for me. Though they don’t even have to end up in the book. Just doing a dialogue like this helps clear the air and get a better focus on them outside of the action.

  4. Like the changing pics. 🙂 (This was fan art, right? They’re nice.) Great opening line, too; or maybe it’s just the character.

I love this post Charles! Wow, OMG I miss my Fizzle. I have to start catching up on my LoW reading. I’ve fallen behind a bit. BTW, I know you don’t do the award bit much anymore, but I still do. Since you do inspire me, I did nominate you for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award that’ll be going live in a few. I already know most of my blogger friends already have a ton, but I want to at least acknowledge them. Hugs to you Charles; here’s the short link, http://wp.me/p38Uaw-xm, and when I’m done with another one of the installments I’ll make sure I’ll include another review.
