Best Laid Plans Go Straight To Hell

I have no friggin’ clue what is going on.  The Compass Key is selling, but the Amazon ranking keeps dropping.  It’ll leap back onto the lists during slow periods and drop when it’s moving.  Typically I don’t pay attention, but it’s a debut month.  That ends tomorrow/Monday and I’ve already sold 600 copies.  There’s been no sudden surge on the other books though, so I don’t know about that rumor that Book 5 is where everything changes.  Doesn’t seem to have made a difference.  Then again, I don’t have anything new to add to my marketing repertoire.  No new interviews or guest blogs.  I submitted a few of those over the last few weeks and not gotten a response.  I should be having a marketing guest post appearing somewhere at some point, but I’m waiting for notification.

(Edit- A sudden surge just hit The Compass Key . . . I haven’t had enough to drink for this roller coaster.)

The big event this week was the beginning of school for the son, which was a little rocky at first.  Mostly trying to figure out the bus schedule and explaining the concept of homework.  I didn’t get as much done as I would have liked while he was away, but I’m falling into a routine.  It’s obvious that I can’t get anything done while he’s home because I have to help him with whatever is sent home.  Also getting lunch ready for the next day, filling out forms, going over homework with him, giving him dinner, talking to him about his day, reading notes from his teacher, bath time, and whatever else turns up.

This whole thing might be feeling worse because I’m cleaning up the older books.  It’s like going to the dentist this time because I always hoped I left this stage behind.  I think things will move quicker as I get further along.  The earlier books were gone over so many times that it feels like a chore.  I’m still hoping I get through all of them by the end of October and start in on Book 9 in November.  Sounds like a ways off, but that factors in distractions and events.  If you wonder how often such things happen to me then you haven’t been following my blog for very long.

I was hoping to work on a few WIP that I had, but that never happened.  I was put in a position where I had to work on those or dive into the editing.  Couldn’t put off the big project any longer since I was seeing random distractions kept turning up.  I might post them on the blog when I have a moment and get some feedback.  I did one of them and didn’t get much, but it was bad timing.  I might even take a day between books to do a WIP or set up a week of October posts.  I’m aiming to do another week of ‘Monster Mash’, which is people give me fake, made up words (not ones that already exist) and I make a post where I turn the words into fictional creatures.  It was a lot of fun last time and October would be the perfect time for it.  I’ll post more about that later on this month since doing it now could lead to people forgetting when the event actually occurs.

Goals of the Week!

  1. Continue and hopefully finish editing one of the books.
  2. Get back into the biking.
  3. Help son with homework and keep that part of my life running smoothly.  Well as smoothly as it can given how many cooks are in the kitchen.
  4. Start making October posts and work on WIP if finish #1.  Just for a daily break.
  5. Edit next book if finish #1 and #4 before next Sunday.  Shouldn’t hold my breath here.
  6. Accept that sleep is not a high priority.

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

To put things in perspective, you’ve sold 100 times as many copies of you newest book than I have of mine.

  4. Sales ranks are behaving strangely these days. Kindle Unlimited may be a factor, but I’ve seen some crazy things with paperbacks, too (like books selling multiple copies per day and in the high hundred thousands). Author rank seems to have a better correspondence with sales. (By the way, KU downloads apparently impact sales rank immediately, whether or not read to 10%.)
