I was asked if there were any video games that influenced my writing. First, I should mention that I went from an Atari 2600 to a Super Nintendo. So I only played the old NES when I got together with friends and family who owned one. Same thing with the Sega systems. So many of the influences are from the SuperNES era:
The big one is Legend of Zelda, which you can see had a hand in the name of my first series. Luke Callindor has a physical similarity to Link as well as being a character of courage. Still, Sin is closer because I designed him while obsessed with ‘A Link to the Past’. He started with a boomerang and a fairy partner. Now he has a crossbow and the fairy partner is more of a friend who is closer to Tinkerbell than Navi.
Castlevania is another big one for some of the monsters and a possible one-shot idea to come later. I loved the variety of creatures and the idea of exploring a castle alone. I tend to go back to Symphony of the Night for monster inspiration too.
This is an obscure one and I credit it with giving me an interest in creating ruins and wonder in Windemere. The world you travel in this RPG always wowed me, so I wanted to create something like that. There is also a continent where ruins from the old world are found everywhere.
I was never an obsessed fan of Final Fantasy, but I always loved the in-depth plot, vast worlds, and colorful characters. My favorite is Final Fantasy 9 because there is something about it that grips me. I can never put my finger on it. So I try to have some stories that use the multi-tier villains, grand travels, and dark secrets of Windemere. This tends to happen more often with Sin than others because he’s the globe-trotter.
There are many other video games that influence me like Metroid, God of War, Prince of Persia, and Dynasty Warriors. Bits and pieces slip in like they do from the comics, TV shows, and anime that catch my interest. Maybe I’ll touch on the anime list next Saturday even if one or two are rather embarrassing.

Whoa ! Interesting ! !

Cool! I played Legend of Zelda with my son. He was good at all the intricate physical moves required and I was good at solving puzzles and riddles. It was one of the things in which we shared immense hours of joy.

I miss the old games where people could work together like that. Current games seem to be all about competing over the Internet and that just brings out rude people. Also there was something more memorable about playing games with people who are in the same room.

We went from an Atari to NES, and then never got another system as a family until we were older and bought our own individual systems. We completely skipped SNES and N64. Just a bit of random trivia lol.
The Legend of Zelda was one of my absolute favorite games on NES. We had a friend who loaned it to us, and we played it obsessively until we “beat the game.” (A very common phrase from my childhood.) I still have our NES and all the games, and occasionally pull it out to play TLoZ once in awhile.

SNES and N64 had some great games, but I can see how someone could last years on NES games.
My first Zelda game was the one on SNES, so I didn’t get to play the original until they put out a special addition for the Gamecube. I played it a bit at a friend’s house, but it was really tough for a kid.

Diablo II was a big favorite in college. I have a friend who loves the Elderscrolls series, but he keeps telling me that I have too many things to do to get involved on those. I tend to get obsessed.

Mass Effect 2 inspired my fiction writing. I wanted to know more about each character in that game, and I cared about them. I want to write characters that other people care about and want to know well. If the creators of Mass Effect 2 can do it, I can too.

I never got into the Mass Effect games due to not going beyond PS2 and Gamecube, but I’ve been told a lot. Still it’s great to have an inspiration like that. Gives you something to shoot for and makes the inevitable ‘what inspired you to become a writer’ question easier to handle. 🙂
