Today, I’m putting Kira Grasdon on the hotseat. This young woman is a merchant’s daughter and meets Luke Callindor at the Hamilton Military Academy. She takes on the role of love interest and is a character with some combat ability, though people tend to forget she’s capable. After Beginning of a Hero, she takes a more cameo role until returning in The Compass Key. Overall, she’s an interesting and fluid character because she puts masks on to meld herself into whatever situation she’s in.
Kira’s background is that she’s the eldest daughter of Wayland Grasdon, a merchant from Bor’daruk. The city of Bor’daruk is in the southern deserts of Ralian and they have some interesting traditions. The oddest one that seems to catch people off-guard is that they maintain open relationships until marriage. Long ago, Bor’daruk was falling into ruin because people were getting bored with spouses and divorcing everywhere. Companies failed, deaths occurred, and society was crumbling until they changed the rules. When dating, you can see other people as long as you introduce them to your main beau and they allow it. Once married, you are with each other until death. Divorce and cheating is punished by exile with only your children allowed to reenter society upon adulthood. This is a brutal and confusing tradition, which many mistake for sleeping around. These people tend to get shocked when they find out how many rules are involved. Needless to say, Luke has trouble wrapping his head around his girlfriend’s requests.
Other things about Kira is that she is cunning even though she acts like a spoiled brat. She is also skilled at a weapon called a kusarigama as seen to the left. There are many surprises around her. Oh, Kira also has black hair and brown/bronze skin, but I couldn’t find a good picture for that unless the woman was wearing ‘armor’. By ‘armor’, I mean something that couldn’t cover an infant.
Ask away!

Kira,
In Beginning of a Hero you were very much taken with Luke. What do you hope the relationship evolves into? Do you want marriage or something else?

I’m hoping it evolves into marriage, but one can never be certain when in love with an adventurer. Though, I’m unclear what else it could turn into. One should always strive for marriage when in a relationship without forcing it upon the other. I guess people have flings and more notorious reasons for dating someone. I have been wooed by those who were only interested in my family’s fortune.

I was thinking of a warrior bond that would take the place of marriage, but marriage sounds like a good idea.

I’m not suited to be a true warrior. I can fight when I have to, but nothing like Luke. Such a bond is forged on the battlefield and is closer to friendship than romance. Besides, there will come a day when Luke’s wanderlust fades and he will want to settle down. If I’m only a warrior to him then he might not push for marriage.

Kira, I know I am surprised with your battle capabilities. Describe the toughest fight you’ve had and how you came out victorious.

Truthfully, I’ve only been in one actual fight. Everything else has been sparring during class. So, the battle against the Spadix and Cyclopes is still the toughest one for me. I don’t even know if I can say I came out victorious since I threw up soon after the battle. I tried to stay hidden in the crowd and focused on defense because I was more interested in surviving than victory.
Battles are terrifying and I’m not in any rush to involve myself in another.

Thank you, Kira. I suspect you underrate your abilities. Look forward to seeing you in the future.

Thank you. My abilities will grow, but nothing like those of Luke or Nyx.
