Wreck-It-Ralph
I need to make my point!
And logic will not work!!
On the screen I need to yell!!!
CAPS LOCK NOT ENOUGH!!!!
My insulted rage must be viewed!!!!!
For the world to see!!!!!!
Forget using words of thought!!!!!!!
I need a symbol for my fury!!!!!!!!
Exclamation point!!!!!!!!!
Come to my aide!!!!!!!!!!
(Seriously, I don’t get the exclamation point abuse I see sometimes.)
About Charles Yallowitz
Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.
lol… I actually try to avoid the use of exclamation points…

I use it when a character is yelling and angry. Outside of that, it’s an oddly rude punctuation mark.

And we all know that just one exclamation point is never enough. You must use many to get your point across!!!!!!!!!

Exactly. That’s how you know a person is serious, mature, and speaks the truth.

But of course!!!!!

What!!!!! This is a very funny post!!!! I try to use exclamation points very, very sparingly, too many and they just become annoying.

I agree. They don’t have much of a purpose outside of dialogue writing.

This is hilarious! My old English teacher would have a fit if he read this post. He always said that one should never use the word ‘nice’ and that it was completely wasted to use more than one exclamation mark ! But I totally get your need for more… 🙂

The extreme use was entirely out of mockery. Not sure why ‘nice’ us a bad word. Never understood why any word shouldn’t be used.

Yes, I got the point of your piece and thoroughly enjoyed it. Just reminded me of my old teacher.
He always said that ‘nice’ was a kind of nothing word – didn’t really do anything. To this day I still try not to use it ….. strange the things that we remember! 🙂

Odd. I think it works fine in dialogue though. People speak with a lot of nothing words.

I like exclamation points if they are use for good – LOL, come over to the light side Luke….so I tend to use them after words like ‘thank you’….so guilty as charged I suppose, but never used in rage…LOL… 🙂

I see them used a lot en masse when people are fighting on the internet. Almost like the more exclamation points, the stronger they think their argument is.

LOL!! I want mine to emphasise the happy side of things, like laughter and thanks yous…. 🙂

I think that’s what they should be restricted to. No negative exclamation usage.

I guess they’re cool when they’re used moderately. Abusers ruin everything! See?

Even that isn’t as bad as others. The ones that drive me nuts are those that go !!!!!!! for some reason.

Love that!!!! I wish I could find the reference in one of Terry Pratchett’s books where he talks about the use of multiple exclamation points is a sign of insanity (which is why I try to use as many as I can).

I can see that. Sadly, I don’t think it’s the good kind of insanity.

LOL…Sounds like a red BOLD PRINT moment! I try not to use them too much, but I will if I am excited…especially in posts 🙂

I can understand using one when excited. That’s what it’s there for. The practice that confuses me is when it looks like somebody simply held their finger on the button. It’s so annoying!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂

Yeah, That really does nothing for me either. It truly doesn’t make me say, “Oh wow, that’s so very important.”

I read that quote in a sarcastic voice because that’s the only way I can see it being said in the situation. ‘Multiple exclamation points? Lives must be at stake!’

I’m going to play devil’s advocate here. I’ve spoken with folks about this, including teens wondering what the big fascination with the exclamation point is. When chatting, kids and teen use it to express happiness, including this 🙂 this 😀 and this ❤ When they see no end of sentence period, they think you're thinking about something. But, if you dare put a period at the end of a sentence, then you're upset, angry or hostile. Yeah, it's that revealing! (There, I used it myself). Thing is, everyone grows up, but the habits stay the same and even I see emails with a healthy garnish of exclamation points from family and friends in their forties and fifties. Including me! It just means we're a happy lot! 😉

I see it get used a lot for anger or if someone is trying to get a point across. Interesting about the period thing. Never knew all the nuances of on-line punctuation usage.

I think I’ve only ever used an exclamation point in a poem once. 🙂
I’ve always found monotone funny. Like Ben Stein. Clear eyes. wow.
There are so many other ways to emphasize or de-emphasize something, or even emphasize something by de-emphasizing everything else. Am I Emphasizing my point yet?

Good point. I think people put too much stock in volume and edgy tone to get points across. A steady, calm tone can be a lot more effective.
