Skip beyond the Kepsler Desert
Ride along the Dalphin River
Blatherhorn Vale lies in wait
Wilderness pristine
Untamed by human hands
Flawless in its beauty
A hidden gem of nature
Blatherhorn Vale sleeps in peace
Creatures of times long lost
Lurk within this land
Long gone from the outer realms
Ancient masters of survival
Blatherhorn Vale exists in mystery
A single note bursts
From among the Wordross Trees
A chorus of chaos
Erupts from all around
Blatherhorn Vale begins to stir

(This is the opening of a poetry compilation I put together for fun. I’m going to post the poems as time goes on. Each one is of a different creature found in Blatherhorn Vale. I had originally intended to make a series of Bestiary compilations, but I lacked an illustrator.)

Thanks. It’s one of those words that just come to me while I was day-dreaming. I’m thinking of making a second Bestiary set as a break from editing Legends of Windemere. Probably go for something aquatic.

I hope you find your illustrator, i like the ideas so far and look forward to more. Particularly liked the idea of the vale coming to l;ife, it had a certain duality in suggestion, 1. That the denziens of the vale were stirring, waking with the dawn, 2. That the Vale was a sentient entity… Thank you for sharing this, Charles, superb reading. Best wishes, Baldy 🙂

Thanks. I had an illustrator, but soon after I finished the poems, his muse disappeared. Our plan was for him to do primitive wood carvings of each creature to make it look like somebody had found the relics and wrote poems about them. That was years ago and he has recovered his inspiration.
For now, I’m going to concentrate on my novels and keep an eye out for opportunities to get the poems out there. Not sure how an illustrated poem would work on Kindle though.

indeed, how facinating, i love the idea of the carvings as relics, truly magicl inspiration, charles. I have over a hundred and forty similar articles (that I call the appendices) for my own mythology/fantasy writing and have been tempted to put them on here but am still in two minds in case they are of use if I ever get published. I am two thirds of the way through editting my first book and have been sending the first chapters out to agents (fingers crossed). I love that i have met some fantasy writers and enthusiasts on this site, it is reassuring to know others have similar qualities to myself. Very much enjoying what I have read of yours so far, sir. I’ll be back for more, sincere best wishes 🙂

Good luck with your book. I remember the agent submission days. I’ve gone self-publishing through Amazon, which is making me wonder if I even need illustrations for Bestiary. I’m going to toss that question into the blog-o-sphere. If I can put Bestiary and a horror novella called Catalysts (it’s on my site somewhere in parts) up on Amazon for .99 cents each then that should be a small boost while I wait for my second book’s cover art. Or just a boost in exposure in general.
