I’m starting to realize that all women in fantasy art are either crones, ‘chicks in chainmail’, or ‘chicks in less than chainmail’. Honestly, why do female fantasy characters stand for the scraps of cloth and metal that constitute armor? So, this is why I’m not putting a picture of Selenia in here. She wears armor or regular clothes, has a military haircut, and wouldn’t be caught dead looking like a sultry Valkyrie. Seriously, I’m sure if somebody tried to do this to her dead body, Selenia would wake up to throw the person a beating.
Now, Selenia Hamilton was another game character created by the gamemaster. I don’t really remember how often she showed up, but it usually involved Luke causing some trouble. She never got to show off her prowess in the game or do anything more than step in to remind Luke that he’s not invulnerable. For the most part, I think she was a rather standard character, which is what you typically get in D&D games, especially with the female characters. Most role-playing guys at this age aren’t that good at role-playing anything beyond hardened female warrior, vapid princess, or hyper-slut when it comes to female characters.
In the book, Selenia took on a bigger role and made her presence known more often. Yet, she still held onto her toughness, so I think she is still a lot like her game persona. She had several encounters with Luke and demonstrated a slight maternal instinct at times. I really just let her fall into the role as I concentrated on other things. She was there when I needed her, patiently waiting for a chance to see some action. I have to say that out of all of my characters, Selenia is definitely the most passive and never strayed from the path I planned for her. This might be why Luke is going to wander back to her academy from time to time. There’s the other reason too, but I won’t go into that.

you say ‘chicks in chainmail’ like that was a bad thing? hehehe

I’d think the chainmail would chafe and pinch. Though, I guess that explains why they always look so angry.

Selenia is really a great character. She seems to be one of those people who really know who they are and she can do just about whatever she wants to do because she knows that. It would be pretty hard to get the upper hand with her.

I think Kevin Masterson is the only one that can do it and not pay for it. I’m playing with the idea of making a book based on her early adventures, but I’ve never been able to do her justice. I keep thinking it might be more impressive for her to be a character who is only learned about through stories and rumors.

Yeah, I like that you have this perspective. It is always laughable in RPGs to see this female toon that is a warrior/tank in a skimpy plate mail outfit. Like, that’s gonna protect her. Not.

One guy that I gamed with in college tried to argue that the revealing outfits stunned the opponents, so it was more useful than the male armor. We didn’t help him when the female players started throwing dice at him.

Funnily enough, that’s probably inspired by the trend in female-figure fantasy art that was popular in the 80s (Julie Belle and Boris Vallejo spring to mind), because, as an artist, the female anatomy is kinda fun to draw. Of course, libido is almost certainly behind this trend also. 🙂

I was thinking that too. I have a few Boris collectible card sets around here. As a kid, I never really understood why anyone would go to battle in their underwear.
