This One’s About Sex

Got your attention?  Well, I wasn’t really lying, but for anyone that has followed me for long enough, you know I’m more into writing the tease, cuddle, post-coital (thanks, Big Bang Theory), and everything other than the actual act.  Something about writing that makes me feel sleazy and I feel like I’m going in the wrong direction.  Still, I’m writing characters who are from 17 to 25 years old and they’re in a world that doesn’t have the sexual hang-ups of our world.  Windemere isn’t a slutty world, but there has never been a social atmosphere of sex being dirty and wrong.  That is except for when sex is used to hurt or manipulate, but we’re going into too many details.  The truth is that my characters have sex and those who survive the series will have kids.  So, I don’t want to shy away from the topic.

A certain gypsy makes this even more difficult.  Sari is a very sexually open character who constantly flusters the more restrained characters.  The scene I’m editing now has her in bed with Nyx, but Sari simply snuck into the bed due to loneliness and an inability to sleep alone.  Still, I don’t hide the fact that they’re naked or avoid Sari’s nonchalance about nudity.  It’s a fun, comedic scene to write, but an awkward scene to read for some reasons.

I guess my concern isn’t that it’s a bad scene or that I go too far.  God knows I could go a lot further in stuff like this.  Nyx and Sari do have occasional borderline lesbian moments due to Sari still wanting to act like they did when they were kids.  So, maybe I’m just concerned due to seeing people over-react to the topic even in its mildest form.  My wife had issues with this scene or any scene where Sari is in her sexual-innuendo dynamo mood.  I wonder if this social nervousness about sex should influence my writing, but I do find it hard to not include this stuff.  Does any other author include even the discussion of sex in their book or is it simply a taboo topic?

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

I think you really need to trust your gut on this one. I think if you play down a characters sexuality you’ll eventually end up with a watered down version of who you know they really are, and that would not be authentic..and it’ll show, people will feel it.

Good advice. Sari being sexual is part of her charm and it’s not in a slutty way. It’s more that she’s openly talking about it and very casual about it. She’s supposed to be the wild champion anyway.

I agree with Leisa – you can’t ignore it unless your characters are all androids! But it doesn’t have to be overt, in-your-face (pardon the expression) subtle is better. Please no coy words/phrases for relevant body parts either. This is one area where writers and their nearest and dearest do get uncomfortable – i’ve a sneaky feeling they think others will think that any sex scenes are based on their activities. 🙂 Go with what feels right for you characters not for you.

I never really understood the ‘sneaky phrases’ habit. Some of those phrases can be downright strange. Thanks. I’m definitely going to go with what’s natural for the characters and see what happens. It’s worked out well so far.
