Virtual Book Tours… why they don’t work, or do they?

Chris The Story Reading Ape's avatarChris The Story Reading Ape's Blog

I am bracing myself for a tirade or abuse about how book tours are brilliant and an effective way of reaching new audiences. You’re entitled to your view. In fact, I’d welcome some more success stories. Of course, you might be nodding in agreement, vehemently screaming “I knew it, I knew it” at your screen. I may disappoint you too, I’m afraid. The answer is that like anything else, the success of book tours depends on a number of factors – including your expectations and a hefty piece of your own leg work.

Once you’ve finished this, open your internet browser and search “why virtual book tours don’t work.” Will you get an answer to your query? Sadly, no. If you are looking for hard data on why you should bother with virtual book tours (or blog tours as the majority really are) you will be in for quite a…

RawrLove for Rara

Madame Weebles's avatarFear No Weebles

We interrupt our regular programming (I know, I know, the programming hasn’t been regular for a while, I’m getting to that) to bring you this very important message…….

This one is for Rara, the well-loved blogger whom you may know as Rarasaur. As you may already know, Rara has been serving a prison sentence for the past year—we don’t have to get into the details here—she has written about her situation in detail on her blog. Suffice it to say, she was given a bum rap. She’s scheduled to be released in a few months.

A few weeks ago, her beloved husband, whom you may know as Grayson Queen (also known as Dave), died suddenly. He died way too soon and way too young. His last posts are haunting; he wrote of not feeling well and described some troubling symptoms. And then the posts stopped.

Rankings Already and a Pain in the Brain

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

So . . . this happened for Ichabod Brooks & the City of Beasts:

  • Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #85,266 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
    • #55 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Literature & Fiction > Action & Adventure > Short Stories
    • #64 in Books > Literature & Fiction > Action & Adventure > Short Stories
    • #100 in Kindle Store > Kindle Short Reads > 45 minutes (22-32 pages) > Science Fiction & Fantasy

Keep in mind that Amazon only shows the best 3 rankings, so I could be on other lists.  I guess I should look, but I thought today would be resting until returning to Book 11 tonight.  To be fair, I thought I’d get back to Book 11 this afternoon.  Then I put the kid’s bed together.  Also this:

Me on Bike– Just going to relax and do some promotions.  All the side projects are out of my mind.

Brain– You know what would be fun?  A group of criminals helping a woman get across the country after the government collapses.

Me– But I haven’t even seen Fury Road yet!  What are you doing?

Brain–  I have a great idea for an insane serial killer that would fit with this.

Me– Stop it.  I’ll get the booze and make you pay.

Brain– An alcoholic wouldn’t work well.  Definitely need a thief.  What about this plot twist?

Me– When am I supposed to write this?

Brain– Book 11 will be done by the end of June.  Edit ‘The Mercenary Prince’ and then dive into this one.  We can work the chapters by adventure.

Me– But I want to sleep.

Brain– You talk as if I leave you alone while you’re unconscious.  So adorable.  By the way, coordination issue coming.

Me– What?  *slip on pedals and whacks ankle* Damn it!

So there you have it.  I’m taking this afternoon to jot down the newest idea to pop into my head because apparently I can’t focus on one thing at a time.  Ichabod goes live and this thing turns up.  Not sure how big a story it will be and I won’t talk much about it on my blog.  At least not for a while.  Fingers crossed that everything falls into place.

UPDATE!

  • Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #33,212 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

In a time of heroes, a man will take any job to provide for his family.

Ichabod Brooks has earned a reputation for taking the jobs most men and women fear to challenge. This reputation has brought him to the charred remains of a small village nestled within the hills and forest of Ralian. The ruins are a source of strange monsters that terrorize the countryside and repeatedly elude the local guards and hunters. The few brave souls who have entered the creatures’ lair have yet to come out alive or dead.

The chances of survival are slim, but that generous payment is too much for Ichabod to resist. After all, a man and his family have to eat.

How long are the books that you read? (SURVEY)

READING SURVEY

How long are the books that you read?

Do you read mostly full-length books? novellas? novelettes? short stories? short or long nonfiction books?

The first 4 questions are for fiction; the last 2 are for nonfiction.

The 2 questions about short stories and novelettes exclude children’s, so that we don’t get illustrated children’s picture books mixed up with short stories, for examples. (See my other surveys—there is a link below the surveys—if you’re curious about children’s books.)

View the results after you take the survey.

You can take each survey more than once, if, for example, you have multiple family members using the same computer.

I will leave these polls open indefinitely. The more people who take the survey, the more meaningful the statistics become.

If you missed my other reading surveys, you can check them out here:

Where Did Ichabod Brooks Come From?

Ichabod BrooksBecause I can’t say it enough, Ichabod Brooks & the City of Beasts debuts tomorrow.  As a pre-release treat, I’m going behind the scenes to show how this character came about.  Would you believe he first appeared on this blog in April of 2013?  Well he did and here’s the post.

Originally Ichabod Jones, he started as a name that I couldn’t get out of my head.  I decided to peek down the rabbit hole after a few weeks of wondering why I liked that name.  Not much happened for several months, but one day a story evolved around Ichabod.  He was a loner in a world where people lived above a toxic cloud.  He was one of the few who could ‘dive’ into the old world and not be poisoned by the pollution.  So he would take assignments to recover items for people.  This was going to be a book where Ichabod got involved in rebels, survivors on the surface, and the truth behind the fate of the world.  It never made it beyond a brief explanation in one of my many notebooks.  So our apathetic hero remained in slumber until I wrote the poem in April and forgot him again.

Bring us to earlier this year and I found myself in the darker parts of Legends of Windemere.  Heroic spirits were being battered, Stephen was having sadistic fun, hearts were being stomped, and I really needed something more simple and upbeat to write.  I saw my son playing and got the idea of a short story where the hero was a father.  At first, he was going to travel with the kid like ‘Lone Wolf & Cub‘.  I’d never read that, but I knew of the basic concept.  Then everything changed by having the hero become a family man that is simply trying to earn a living.  At this point I wanted to make the man before I settled on the adventure and life details.

I remembered Ichabod Jones and changed him into the middle-aged father/husband with a reputation for taking on dangerous jobs.  The personality came about as writing, but I started with the idea that he was dedicated to his family.  He talks and thinks about them quite often.  Even a part of his contract involves allowing him to claim a souvenir for his son.  This was the new hero of Windemere, who wasn’t going to have epic struggles like Luke Callindor.  He was only out to make a living and sometimes his assignments went a little out of whack.

Now for anybody who remembers a few months ago, Ichabod Jones was revealed to already exist in a comic book.  Entirely different character and world, but why take the risk?  So I took suggestions and votes where ‘Brooks’ took the gold medal.  I’ve gotten used to calling him Ichabod Brooks and I like what he’s become.  How many adventures will he have?  I don’t know.  It really depends on the reception, but he might become a summer release and, if he gets enough traction, I’ll try to make the next one a compilation of short stories.  So fingers are crossed that Ichabod is greeted with positivity and can be a recurring hero for me to work with.

Craig Boyack 01
Hello, fellow primates, and thanks for reading my post. I’m Craig Boyack, and I write speculative fiction in my spare time.

That isn’t everything I do, however. I hold down a regular job, have a lovely wife, and three adult children. We also have three pretty cool grandchildren. I like to do outdoors things with a more mellow side. I fish, forage, enjoy hunting for cool rocks, that sort of thing. I’ve panned for gold, and it’s nearly morel mushroom season here in Idaho. I grow my own fruit trees, and keep a thirtyish year old sourdough starter named Tituba.

When it comes to city life, my wife and I still do date night every weekend. We enjoy dinner and a movie, and I really like the whole craft beer movement. We save up for something bigger at least once per year, and it may be a play or a…
