Dariana Answers Your Questions

Dariana by Jason Pedersen

On November 6th, I made a post asking for questions that Dariana can answer for our final interview. This is to help kick off the hype and final march towards Legends of Windemere: Warlord of the Forgotten Age. Let’s start.

Victoria Zigler asked:  What are your least favourite and most favourite of the changes you’ve witnessed in the world each time you’ve been woken up?

I can’t really think of anything that would be a least favorite because I typically didn’t stay awake for very long.  Prior to my current adventure, my record was a few months where I stayed on the run.  Not much time to critique my surroundings.  Closest thing to something I don’t like is how I have to keep learning the new leaders since the ones I heard of before sleeping would be dead.  Most favorite is the music, which I like listening to and comparing to what I remember.  Even when nobody is playing, I’m able to pick up on songs in the minds of those around me.  I’m sorry if that sounds very intrusive, but I swear I only do a surface scan and don’t touch on other thoughts.

L. Marie asked:  Who among the other champions is someone you feel closest to? Why? What are the qualities you value in a comrade?

  1. I’m fairly uncomfortable picking a favorite since I’m close to all of my friends.  Since I haven’t had so many at once, I’m nervous that picking one might make the others jealous.  As long as they understand that I’m not picking a favorite, I would have to say Luke.  Not because we have a lot in common or get along so well since that would usually be Nyx.  Don’t get me wrong because I’m very close with Nyx.  The two of us are considered living weapons and have known about our destinies for most of our lives.  Yet, I’ve spent more time in Luke’s mind and connected to his thoughts than the other champions.  We talked before I woke up and I’ve helped him recover from many traumas.  Maybe it’s just a telepath thing that I feel closer to him regardless of having more similarities with Nyx.
  2. Most of my comrades have been mean and suspicious because of my lineage.  So, my standards might be lower than they should be.  A level of understanding and acceptance is very much appreciated.  No sense in being friends if the other person hates me for what I am.  Sari has told me that I should value people who like to have fun.  I’m still trying to get the hang of that since I don’t drink and modern dances are kind of odd to me.

C.S. Boyack asked: Would you prefer to get on with life, or be put back to sleep to look for a better era to live in?

Being put back to sleep always felt like a punishment, so I would really not want to go through that again.  There’s no telling if I’d ever find a better era too, so it’s wiser to live the life I’ve been given.  Considering I have the lifespan of a god, I would get to that period anyway.  Perhaps it would be more enjoyable if I experienced the events that led to the new era instead of simply waking up during it.  I’m sorry, but I find it hard to wrap my mind around the concept.  Only because I’ve only ever been given the second option and the first one has always been a dream.  Still feels strange that it might be my reality.

Deby Fredericks asked:  As a demi-goddess, do you find it difficult to connect with mortals?

I’ve never really felt comfortable with the title of demi-goddess since that side of the family doesn’t include me very often.  Due to the Law of Influence, they can’t really interact with me, so I do understand.  This is why I connect to mortals with more ease than other immortals.  There’s still a difficulty there because my slumbers have been so long that I’m constantly out of touch with the world.  My telepathy can help with this, but I’m pretty sure that’s cheating.  One thing that does help is realizing that I really don’t have a choice in interacting with mortals or not.  As a champion, I have to be in public to some extent, so a connection has to be made.  I prefer to listen instead of talk, which can delay the revelation that I’m not exactly normal.  People don’t really react too strongly when they find out I’m a godling, which probably goes to show that I’m not as strange as other things in our world.

Nicholas Rossis asked: Given who your father is, do you ever feel torn in your loyalties?

There have been times that I feel torn, which is only natural.  The Baron is my father regardless of his evil acts and our minimal history.  I’ve wondered many times if I was made a champion in order to hurt him and, to a lesser extent, my mother.  So, the whole situation makes me question who I should be loyal to in terms of those manipulating the entire game.

Delvin Cunningham Answers Your Questions

On October 30th, I made a post asking for questions that Delvin can answer. This is to help kick off the hype and final march towards Legends of Windemere: Warlord of the Forgotten Age. Let’s start.

N.A. Granger asked: What do you normally eat to keep up your strength?

Honestly, I’ve never had too much of a problem keeping my strength up as long as I got a good amount of sleep.  I do try to eat a variety of foods that include meat, fruits, and vegetables.  The problem is that none of it keeps very well, so I have to rely on dried foods like every other traveler.  My friends and I do try to supplement this with anything we find in the wild, but you never know how that will turn out.  My own knowledge of what’s edible and not out there isn’t the best.  I do know not to eat mushrooms because even the ones that look familiar could make me sick.  Learned that one the hard way.

Okay, I’m being told by the other champions that I have to admit to something.  I drink a lot of coffee, especially when I’m tired.  It isn’t the most common drink in Serab since it’s more popular in the Yagervan Plains, so it makes me stand out.  Things have been easier since I won a set of magical rings that make coffee.  Each one is a different flavor and the temperature is always perfect.

L. Marie asked: What do you like/love most about Nyx? What do you do daily to keep your skills honed?

  1. Kind of an awkward question because it’s not the easiest thing to put into words.  I guess it was love at first sight or listen since she intrigued me from our first real encounter.  We met briefly before that, but I was talking to Fritz and Luke while trying to do a job, so I didn’t really spot her in the crowd.  Maybe it was that she had a presence that drew me in when we were finally one-on-one.  Picking one thing about Nyx is really tough because she’s certainly an overall package with one aspect not being more important than the other.  Really feel like I should pick something here, but I can’t choose one.  Her ability to never give up is a good choice, but I don’t know if that works for such a romantic question.
  2. I try to practice as often as I can.  Being on the road helps keep me in shape, but my sword skills do require at least a daily review of the arm work.  If I’m able to, I try to spar with Luke or Timoran.  Tried with Sari once, but it cost me my money pouch and shirt.  Dariana doesn’t really like sparring since she fears she would hurt us if she got into it too much.  Oh, there is one exercise where Nyx or Fizzle create an illusion for me to fight.  Works better with Fizzle because Nyx sometimes cheats by throwing a few minor trick spells into the mix.  We’re pretty sure Sari is the one behind this habit since it’s a bit too mischievous for Nyx and she only does it to me.

Colin Noel-Johnson asked:  Have you ever gone up against an enemy who seemed to know your plan so perfectly you wondered if they had read your mind? Also, what is the most important thing to learn before going adventuring?

  1. It’s happened and has only come down to an actual telepath once.  Sometimes you’re just unlucky and your strategy ends up being the one they predicted.  I’d love to say that it’s all about intelligence when it comes to strategy, but there is a little bit of luck needed.  The enemy has to act a certain way for your main plan to work and you have to realize that they could be doing the same to you.  Many times it comes down to whoever makes the predicted mistake first.  Early on, I wondered if I was being scryed on or there was a magical reason for the loss.  Then, I captured a warlord for a job and he accused me of being a telepath.  The two of us had a good laugh about that right up until he tried to escape and Tavris had to body slam him through a tree stump.  We also learned not to give our strongest warrior all of the strength-enhancing relics and an ogre power potion.
  2. I can only speak for myself here because I’m sure the others would have a different answer.  You should also keep in mind that I trained to be a soldier or mercenary instead of an adventurer.  So, the most important stuff I learned was how to keep myself alive.  Not only swordplay and weapon maintenance, but how to find food if you’re lost in the wilderness.  Actually, food and shelter are probably bigger than fighting.  Doesn’t matter how good you are with a sword when you don’t have the energy to lift it.  With that said, I’m really glad I have Luke and Timoran with me because I never really mastered the art of hunting.  Closest skill I have is being able to negotiate a meal from a tavern and scrounging dumpsters like I did before Selenia found me.  Doesn’t really help in the woods.

Victoria Zigler asked: Do you enjoy the challenge of coming up with plans that factor in unexpected moves from allies – like Luke – who aren’t so good with sticking to plans?

Tough one because I do enjoy coming up with plans, but the real challenge is making ones that won’t get anyone killed.  I take this very seriously, so it really isn’t until after the operation that I notice the fun.  Not all the time since the champions work together and those conversations can become a party.  In fact, Sari makes sure they do because she can only be serious for so long.  As far as Luke goes, I feel bad singling him out here since there have been times that the others change a plan.  It happens when they see an opportunity that I didn’t predict or see.  He does tend to be the most common perpetrator, which is why I always come up with various backup plans that factor in him going on his own.  I’d like to think Luke has taught me to be better at thinking on my feet and I hope he’d say the same about me teaching him how to plan.

Wren, on #LisaBurtonRadio

coldhandboyack's avatarEntertaining Stories

Lisa Burton

Hello all you diva’s and superstars. Welcome to another edition of Lisa Burton Radio, the only show that interviews the characters from the books you love. I’m your host, Lisa the robot girl, and today we’re going to try something a little bit different.

I receive mail, and sometimes we read them on the air as kind of an advice column. This one sparked my interest. We have someone calling herself Aunt Char, and she’s worried about her niece, Wren.

I heard a show recently where the radio host called someone up, and that’s just what we’re going to do. Just bear with me while I dial the number.

“Good morning, Char speaking.”

“Hello, this is Lisa Burton, and you’re on the air right now. Is this Aunt Char?”

“I just told you my name is Char. I was hoping that you would call. I have waited all week. I…

Timoran Wrath Answers Your Questions

Cover Art by Jason Pedersen

On October 23rd, I made a post asking for questions that Timoran can answer. This is to help kick off the hype and final march towards Legends of Windemere: Warlord of the Forgotten Age. Let’s start.

L. Marie asked: What do you do to keep your rage under control?  Who among your friends has challenged your ideals? How did you defend your beliefs and still keep the friendship?

  1. All barbarians are trained to control their instinctual rage from childhood.  Our ancient ancestors were true berserkers who were at the whim of their temper.  Gradually, they learned methods of meditation and focus to keep this in check.  As we grow and learn, we develop the ability to unleash our rage at certain intervals.  Every barbarian has his or her own calming focus as well.  Some do poetry like my friend Cyrus and others do farming.  I prefer philosophy and spending time with friends.
  2. Nobody has ever truly challenged my ideals.  We have great respect for each other since we understand our differences.  The closest situation to this would be my own issues with Nyx and her magic.  Barbarians are typically fine with magic, but I have always seen the power of casters to be fairly unnatural.  Shamans work with nature and priests work with the gods and goddesses, but casters seem to manipulate the energy that permeates us all.  So, I see her power as a slight invasion of the soul, which is why she only casts magic on me in emergencies or with permission.  Considering we need to depend on each other in battle, I cannot let my beliefs cause trouble.
  3. I may have already answered this question, but I will add that we have had many conversations about this.  That helps us see where we are coming from and find a middle ground.  Since I would never force her to give up magic and she would never force me to accept it without question, our friendship is not really at risk.

Colin Noel-Johnson asked:  Have you ever found a drink that was too strong for you? Have you ever wished you had a normal non-magical weapon? Who would you rather work with, a Gnome or a caster you didn’t know? Do you believe that your every action is controlled by you or is it preordained or prewritten?

  1. There is nothing that comes to mind.  Some have been too bitter or sour for me, but I have yet to meet a drink that I could not handle.
  2. Many do think it is curious that I have problems with magic, but use a deflection axe.  I will admit that I had some early misgivings about this.  Yet, I would never trade it away since it was a coming-of-age gift.  My parents had it made by Elan Callindor and enchanted by a caster they were friends with before they passed away.  To wish for a different weapon would be an insult to them.  I feel using it always helps me remember that not all who wield such magic mean to cause harm.
  3. My interactions with gnomes has been rather limited, so I would rather work with one of them.  Solely for the experience.  The few times I have met gnomes, it is has been an interesting mix of fear and curiosity.  They are a fascinating people who look far into the future and try to make it a reality.  Gnomes are very skilled debaters and conversationalists too, which sweetens the pot.
  4. Ah, this is always a tricky question.  Having a God of Destiny makes many, even in our own world, feel like everything is predetermined.  You stub your toe when you are fifteen and you blame Gabriel for it.  This is what people do when they wish for a scapegoat or want to avoid responsibility.  Many who have read the philosophical books know that Windemere is a world of balance.  Part of our lives are predetermined by fate while the paths we use to get there and the more minor pieces are driven by free will.  There is also a vagueness such as being in a certain place at a certain time to meet someone who ‘could be’ our beloved.  Gabriel has decided that you be there, but it is your own actions that create the final stage.  This is especially clear with the champions since we are destined to fight the Baron, but there is nothing in the prophecy to say that we are certain to win.  I apologize for this being long-winded, so I will sum up in case I went off topic.  Not every action is determined by fate, but the stages and turning points in our lives are.  For the world to function correctly, destiny and free will must be in balance.

Victoria Zigler asked: Are you as skilled with other weapons as you are with your axe? Is there a weapon you wish you were more skilled with?

While I have trained with many weapons, I focused on axe-fighting to the point where that is my area of expertise.  Most barbarians will have that one weapon they favor since it takes many years of concentration to gain sufficient ability.  We also train in hand-to-hand combat, but one could not really say that barbarians specialize.  It is more for emergencies in the case of being disarmed or if we wish to take someone alive.  Our style is fairly basic with bone-breaking and brute force being the core.  There are times I consider learning more about swordplay, but that is only because they are a more common weapon than spears and axes.  If I need a weapon in a pinch then that is typically what I would find and my attacks will normally destroy the blade within a blow or two.  Still, I know enough to counter and hold my own, which is good enough.

10 ways reading creates a sharper brain – Guest Post by, Evie Harrison…

Chris The Story Reading Ape's avatarChris The Story Reading Ape's Blog

I remember the first time I read Jane Austin; it was the first of a long list of novels, memoirs and biographies that showed me how to unwind from the woes of this world. For me, like for many others, the combination of duty, desire and destiny that govern our lives seemed to simply fade away and my mind became free to explore its creative potential when it was just me and my latest pick.

With each finished book, I felt an amplification in my mental vigour in one way or another and found myself much more prepared to take on the challenges of the world. So, I recently decided to understand what happens in the brain when a person reads.

Not surprisingly, I found that reading enriches the brain. However, the intricacy and meticulousness with which this improvement occurs was baffling. Research confirms that reading does more than add…

Outline Poking: Monster vs Monster vs . . . Monster?

Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah

So, I have less time for stuff than I expected, which has led to me thinking in circles on Raven’s Wrath.  For those who don’t know, this is the October story series I’ve been doing for the last 3 years and will complete next year.  Horror isn’t my wheelhouse, so I’m never sure what I’m doing here.  Just been going along with what feels right, which is why the following has happened:

  1. Raven’s Hold– Supernatural, psychological thriller attempt
  2. Raven’s Game– Serial killer supernatural thriller attempt
  3. Raven’s Dawn– Cult college supernatural attempt

This leaves me with Raven’s Wrathwhich has a character from the first book returning with the same reality-bending powers as Dawn Addison.  I don’t think it would work to have them battling for all 13 chapters/31 sections.  So, I’ve been looking at Freddy vs Jason and Godzilla movies for ideas.  Nothing has happened, but I think part of it is because I’m leaning toward a strange move in this series.  It brings me closer to my comfort zone, so I figured I’ll pose it here and see what people think:

The idea is that Dawn is split in her first encounter with Ian.  You have insane Dawn on the rampage and sane Dawn, who is the one that the story follows.  She’s heading for a rumored haven in the hopes of getting away from her other self and Ian, so she travels with people.  The battling reality warpers have twisted the world, so it would be a journey through deadly terrains.  Unlike the previous stories, it won’t take place in one location and the killing scenes might be mass attacks or something else.  Probably some bizarre meetings with distorted denizens. It’s very different from the previous stories, which makes me wonder if it works.

So, what do people think?  Does it make sense to end this horror series with an adventure type story?
