I think you definitely need to have hope. It is a tricky one though. Other people can support and encourage, but hope has to come from inside. It is a personal feeling, but affected by external events.

Without hope you feel like you are just screaming into an endless void. Creatives of any type create for the purpose of creation, expression and giving their lives meaning, but a little appreciation is motivating.

How important is hope to an artist? That varies by the person. Some are fortunate and have confidence naturally. Others definitely need to be supported and encouraged.
How would you describe the hope an artist might need? Again, it varies by what the artist needs. Some need for customers to buy their book or illustration in order to feel validated. Some need reviews or the buy-in of an agent. Some just need to be told “good job!”
What would you do to instill hope in an artist? First, purchasing the work. But then writing reviews or asking in person questions that show I really read and engaged with the story.

Be nice if everyone could muster their own hope without needing it from outside sources. Then again, too many people set out to destroy the hopes and dreams of others. So, artists need their backers and emotional protectors.

I never got it when people set out to tear each other down. There’s no benefit, except maybe assuaging their own jealousy or guilt for not pursuing their own art.
