Questions 3: Spooky Season

There is a more ghost-specific Q3 coming at the end of the month, but I thought of some interesting seasonal questions.  Let’s dive right into it.

  1. Why do you think some people like being scared?
  2. Why do you think October was picked as the month for spookiness?  (Alternate: Why do you think Halloween and Samhain were put here?)
  3. What is your favorite spooky monster?

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

  1. Never could figure out that first one, but some people really dig it. #2 is the changing of the seasons. A complete edit from Spring and Summer into what’s coming. I don’t know that I have a favorite, but the headless horseman is high on my list.

    1. It’s an antidote to being bored. The physical world can get very boring with its emphasis on the material.
    2. It’s the time when the veil between the physical world and the spirit world is at its thinnest, as we enter the dark half of the year.
    3. Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice.

  2. I think some people like being scared since they get an adrenaline rush which they find pleasant.

October was picked as the month for spookiness since the chillier weather is conducive to goosebumps?

My favorite spooky monster is Freddy Krueger. That skin and those stiletto nails are enough to give me the shivers.

      1. I have no idea why people like being scared. Personally, I dislike it intensely.
      2. In pagan times, this time of year marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of the new year. Pumpkins, apples etc were used to celebrate the harvest. During the dark times, people think of death, and they believed that the veil between the living and the dead thinned at this time. The Christian Church adopted this day as All Hallows in order to encourage people to move to Christianity as it was a similar festival, recognising the dead saints rather than ancestors.
      3. I don’t think I have a favourite monster, unless you are counting dragons, but they’re not supernatural.

      1. Why do you think some people like being scared? They know it isn’t real, so they can feel that tingle of apprehension without a true risk.
      2. Why do you think October was picked as the month for spookiness?  Samhain has its origin in ancient religions, which included some serious sky-watching. The date was chosen for their purposes, and later taken over by other belief systems until we no longer completely understand what the date originally meant.
      3. What is your favorite spooky monster? I do like witches, because there’s such a tension between admiring their powers and knowing if they mean to do something evil.
