X-Babies

As I was looking through my future ideas, I kept running into a set of notes that came at the end of all the big series.  These were called ‘Footsteps’ and stemmed from a point when I was going to have the children of various champions from Legends of Windemere go on an adventure.  I ended up doing this with other stories and it would range from a single book to a trilogy.  Usually, they ended up facing a villain or problem stemming from the original tales.  So, what happened here?

Obviously, I’m asking the question because this concept has become fairly defunct right now.  I still look at it and wonder if it can be done, but then I remember that I create a few problems with it.  During the times when I fell out of sorts with the concept, I did my cannibalism thing, so the following happened:

1. Children of various champions ended up in other series, which made their debut stories rather moot.
2. I took adventure ideas I liked and gave them to Sin or Darwin . . . Oops.
3. I rewrote some heroes in a way that they wouldn’t have kids in the first place.
4. Began making children for characters simply to give them a connection.  Seriously, I ended up having one hero gain two kids without having any type of love life or interest in such things.  This was a big hint that I may have gone too far.

It is kind of a shame that I can’t or won’t go through this idea.  The possibility of a hero’s child taking up their mantle sounds like a winner.  Acts as a continuation of the series that people loved without harming what came before.  Well, there’s less of a chance since you aren’t mucking around with too much and can’t have the parents be too involved.  That was another issue I struck because I had trouble imagining some of the champions letting their kids run off alone.  They had the power and abilities to haul them back fairly easily, which would be a plot hole in my mind.  Although, I was probably grabbing at excuses not to do this when I considered this problem.

Well, I ever do a ‘Footsteps’ story?  Doubt it because I’ve moved all the juicy parts away like I said.  If anything, I shouldn’t entertain the urge to revisit the past in this way because then I’ll ignore the future.  There are tons of heroes and villains who have yet to be introduced to the world.  It’s not fair to them if I hang around a handful of lineages that have really run their course.
