I have to confess to something. I had another post planned about Odd Obstacles in adventures, but I couldn’t figure what I was talking about. Instead, I wandered around my files and found this poem from 2011. It was part of a personal challenge to post a poem every day for a year and I believe this one came from being criticized about not following various rules. God only knows what I did to the English language, but I’m tossing it up without editing or checking. Let’s take some risks. Right, Zoidberg?
I hear it
I see it
The question
What is a poem?
It is an opening
A call
To shred
And maim
A defenseless expression
Born of heart
And soul
Does it truly matter
If we fail
To rhyme the words
When the emotions
Are so strong
Many
Say yes
These are the ones
That wait
In a stationary circle
Drooling
In anticipation
To tear
Into a work of soul
With no remorse
And a hint
Of smarmy pride
I tired of this
Long ago
Trying to put
Reason
To my madness
Always
The say ending
I would present
Reading loud
And clear
Only to find
That my words
Were empty
Rotted by my logic
And dependence
On the rules
No more
I play by rules
No more
Take your rhymes
Your meters
And choke on them
I let my fingers
Fly without true purpose
Following images
That dance
Behind closed eyes
Dictating
For unknown voices
I am at the whim
Of my imagination
And I feel peace

Still relevant today. You go boy!

Well, it is much more fun to break the rules and this is wonderful!! 🙂

Thanks. Rules are fun to bend. Sorry about not responding quicker. Just found your comment in the spam folder.

Oh, don’t worry. I spend a lot of time in different blogger’s SPAM folders, languishing until I get rescued! I should have thought I would be upgraded by now to a folder with a view! 🙂

Weird that it happens. Didn’t think people with pictures go in there instead of pending.

I know, and annoying at times, too! 🙂

There’s a time and a place for poetry forms, but not so many out of the school-room. You learn the rules and then you can break them or not – what matters is the spirit of what you want to say remaining true to yourself. Free verse rules every time! 😀

It’s funny how the rules get thrown around so much. Then again, I do understand why serious poets abide by them. I merely dabble.

Wow! That’s great! A poem is a poem whether it rhymes or not!

Don’t you hate those characters, like The Demon (Dc Comics) who speak in rhyme?

Actually, I like those character quirks. Those are a fun challenge to write.

I really enjoyed reading this. Most of my poetry rhymes and I love rhyme but I totally see how great and free poems can be without ryhme too. Have a good weekend, Sam 🙂

Thanks. Rhyming is fun and I use it at times. Have a bad habit of rhyming myself into a dead end though. That’s never fun when you’re writing along and then you hit a word that makes ‘orange’ look like ‘cat’.
