Timoran Wrath Revisited

Timoran Wrath by Jason Pedersen

Timoran Wrath by Jason Pedersen

He debuted in Prodigy of Rainbow Tower and got his push to main cast in Family of the Tri-Rune.  Since then, Timoran Wrath has been the stable source of physical strength and wisdom among the champions.  He has had several moments to shine, but most of the adventures focus more on one of the others.  Until the upcoming release entitled Tribe of the Snow Tiger.  His secret past is about to be exposed and saying any more could be a spoiler.

The odd thing about Timoran is that he’s a lot of fun to write and I love putting him into scenes.  Yet, he isn’t a show stealer or a constant presence.  The strange thing about Timoran is that I feel like him saying only one line in a scene works for his character.  He is a barbarian, but he isn’t the loud, boisterous brute.  Like Delvin, he does a lot of thinking before speaking.  The difference is that Delvin is a tactician and Timoran is merely a good listener with wise insight.  So he tends to speak when he feels the others are distracted, starting to fight, or he has a way to bring the conversation to a sensible conclusion.  He does seem to function better in one-on-one or small group chats due to his mild persona getting overshadowed by some of the others.

That right there is strange for a character I have listed as a barbarian.  Timoran never seems to have the temperament, which I’ll explain when I delve into how Windemere barbarians operate.  Now, part of this might be because of what happened in the game that the series is based on.  Timoran started as an NPC with the wise, strong, and helpful persona you see in the book.  Then a new player took him over and kept it going for a little while.  At some point, he decided that drinking was his most common activity and the character got shaky.  One scene in particular was in one of the temples where Timoran bolted from the group to reach the wine cellar first and drink a rare type that he was told about.  Needless to say, I stuck with the original model and people seem to enjoy that version.

So, what does the upcoming adventure mean for Timoran?  Much like The Mercenary Prince did for Delvin, this is a big push for Timoran.  He will be in the center and much of his past will be revealed.  Once this adventure is done, he won’t be the same and will have to adapt to his new role.  Keep one thing in mind that Timoran has been cruising on his opening skill set since the beginning.  He’ll have to discover some new tricks that might not always be battle-based.  This is not the only thing though because he still stands as the most mature and stable of the champions.  So his challenges will differ from the others in that he’ll need to fall, come back up, and then realize that his life has a new level for him to reach.

Honestly, I’m really looking forward to seeing how people take to this because Timoran’s adventure has been a long time coming.  Fingers crossed that I can release it in May.

  1. Sounds like a good character arc.

  2. Timoran seems like the noble savage type, rather than the berserker.

Still, I actually kinda like the idea of him having a soft spot for wine, as long as it’s in the sense of appreciating a rare type, rather than being a drunkard.

    • The book version definitely enjoys drinking and appreciates the taste. That’s really a culture thing. The game version kind of descended into blatant alcoholism before the whole thing ended. So I dialed it back a lot.

Noble savage is a good word for him.

  3. It sounds bitter sweet in a way. When you’ve worked with a character so long and built up to their turn in the spotlight – exciting for your readers, though 🙂

    • I definitely felt this was more sweet than bitter. Timoran’s spotlight has been a long time coming. He’s supported the others through everything and now we get to see if they return the favor.

I like him, his strengths especially as he does better talking one to one rather than in a group, that sounds very like me. I am looking forward to learning more about his history.
