Darkness at the edges
Always has been
And will forever be
Yet every generation says
We will not be the last
We cannot be the last
Humanity is eternal
So our actions continue
Pointing fingers and passing debts
Believing the end is myth
There will always be tomorrow
Never stopping to ask:
What if the final generation
Is us?
About Charles Yallowitz
Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.
I think we just might be. Food for thought. :O

Yeah. Kind of scary when you think about it. Which is kind of what prompted the poem.

A very provocative question. And yes, scary.

Sine I’m old and have grandkids I know I won’t be the final generation. I sure hope they aren’t either.

I feel that way about my son. To be honest, there are days I look at the state of the world and feel guilty about subjecting him to it.

If we thought we were the last generation, we would start to act like it. Not bothering to clean anything up, dispensing with law and order and education — because those things only matter for the future. One might see futility in planning for the future, but that planning makes the present a lot more bearable.

But in a way, humanity is taking advantage of not being the last generation. Society seems practically designed to push things off on the future generations and work on to survive today. The truth is that the last generation won’t know it’s them until it’s too late.
